TRE CASE MEDITERRANEE
“Tre livelli”, Alassio (Sv),
“Casa tra gli alberi”, Torino,
“Casa tra gli ulivi”, Montegrazie (Im)
2. Studioata
founded in 1998 is
an office composed
by 10 young
architects.
Studioata
Orizzontal
organization
structure (vs
pramidal with
the leder on top)
represents the will
of its members to
widen their own
educational and
cultural process.
5. Koppen: a system
that identifies
climate zones.
The Koppen
system defines
the climate of the
Mediterranean as
CS.
The climate of the
Mediterranean is a
sub tropical climate:
dry summer;
mild winters;
very highsunlight;
concentration of
precipitation in cold
weather;
summer almost dry;
medium strong wind
regime.
Aleppine courtyard house
6. Ancient origins:
it derives from the
Hellenistic home
court before, Roman
one later and
Byzantine one too.
The variations are
determined by three
aspects:
- the influence of
different cultures
(Islamic culture),
- construction
techniques,
materials, etc:
original architectural
construction
practices
- specific space
needs (climate,
habits, etc.)
Aleppine courtyard house
7. The courtyard
system in the urban
fabric of Aleppo.
Courtyard houses
consist of one or two
floors level around
an inner yard.
The residential
distric is clustered
around major alleys
which lead to
court yard houses
through a system of
secondary streets
and blind alleys.
Aleppine courtyard house
8. The Aleppine
courtyard house
generates a compact
and introverted
urban fabric.
This enclosed
urban fabric is
made of concentric
progressive fences
and silent roads and
walkways.
You access the
courts through the
“cul de sac” which
is the last element
in the scale of public
approaches to the
residence.
Effect of the
progressive original
domus divisions and
obstruction.
Aleppine courtyard house
9. Skif:
a maze entrance at
the end of the cul de
sac.
The Skif avoids
introspection,
indiscreet eyes (for
example, if you leave
the door open to
increase the flow of
air during warmer
periods).
Aleppine courtyard house
10. The rooms
surrounding the
courts face on it,
while the walls are
essentially without
openings.
A extremely
silent and severe
cityscape.
This typology allows
you to protect
domestic spaces
from chaotic city
noise and dust.
Aleppine courtyard house
11. Two floors + Quabu
(a semi basement
under the two
graound floors).
Quabu is used
in summer as a fresh
space ,
In winter as a cold
space to store food.
Facades are
generally made of
stone.
The stone walls are
a good defense from
the summer heat.
It consist of two
or three rows of
widows that give
light and air to the
interior.
Aleppine courtyard house
12. The Iwan ,
positioned north, is
an opened empty
covered space.
The Iwan is almost
always lifted some
steps from the
ground to capture
better air flow that
pass through the
courtyard.
Aleppine courtyard house
13. In the courtyard
there were trees and
water features.
The fountains are
able to produce
large benefits in a
warm dry climate:
fountains are able to
lower temperatures
as a result of
evaporation,
humidifying dry air
at the same time.
The Al masharabia
are architectural
elements used
to decrease the
summer irradiation:
sunscreens filter out
the sun’s rays and
increase privacy.
Aleppine courtyard house
14. A difference in
height is located
inside housing at the
inlet.
It identifies a kind of
trap to prevent the
cold air entering the
house in winter.
(Living rooms,
realized raised, to an
higher level, remain
warmer).
This will also prevent
the winter rains to
invade the house.
Aleppine courtyard house
15. Almalkaf captures
main winds and
deflects them inside
the house.
It could be fitted
with supports acts
to fix tissues able
to filter the air from
dust.
The fabrics, when
wet, are able to
humidify invading
house air flows.

17. The house among
the Trees wins the
prize Architetture
Rivelate 2013, that
comes from the
OAT (Ordine degli
Architetti PPC della
Provincia di Torino).
The house among
the trees wins the
second prize at the
RI.U.SO International
Competition,
promoted by the
CNA, Legambiente
and ANCE.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
18. The House among
the Trees is situated
in the district of San
Salvario: center of
the major migration
flows that shaped
the city in the
second post-war
period.
Now marked by
an extraordinary
process of
gentryfication which
profoundly changed
not only the social
and generational
composition but also
the builfscape.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
19. The project is aimed
at restructuring
a low building
formerly used as
a workshop and
converting it to
residential use.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
20. Before the change
of use, the building
was a workplace
used for handicrafts
production.
The low building and
its courtyard before
restructuring.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
21. The scope for this
intervention is to
restructure the low
building and its
courtyard.
The building looks
like an independent
building inserted in
the urban fabric.

23. The voids:
Define two empty
spaces: the
courtyard and the
patio,
around which
the living space is
configured.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
24. The light:
The new skylights
inserted in the roof
ensure maximum
light yield even in
adverse seasonal
conditions and offer
a pleasant view of
the sky.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
25. The green system:
The flat roof of the
building and the
new wing has been
transformed into a
roof garden,
a terrace,
and many trees in
the courtyard,
to emphasize the
outdoor space.

Shared Courtyard
28. A new party wall
separates the
private yard of the
apartment from the
common courtyard.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
29. The blind wall,
the entrance door
and the sliding
driveway door,
completely plastered
make up a barrier
against noise and
against prying eyes.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
30. The presence of
trees and small
green areas has
transformed the
courtyard into an
unexpected and
urban garden that
offers a lovely view
from all the rooms
of the house.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
31. In winter, the
naked trees reveal
the façade of the
building, whose
appearance suggests
a workshop.
The light, no longer
shaded by the thick
summer foliage, is
allowed to freely
enter into all living
spaces.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
32. The vegetal
elements
in the courtyard
seem to want to
regain their space
by “splitting” the
floor constructed
in Liege bluestone
staves.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
33. The living area
overlooks the inner
patio. Large sliding
windows help create
continuity between
interior and exterior,
integrating the
living space with the
vegetal elements.
The long cement
support surface
connects the two
zones.
A cement support
surface, provided
with iron-coated
pull-out drawers,
runs along the
whole length of the
living room up to
the outdoor patio
becoming a bench to
sit on in summer.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
34. In summer, thanks
to large full-height
sliding windows, the
patio becomes an
integral part of the
kitchen.
Coplanarity of walls
and floors and the
use of the same
materials for both,
create an ambiguous
boundary between
interior and exterior,
where the outside
becomes the inside
and vice versa.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
35. The dining area
is surrounded
by sliding French
windows.
Its provide a
spectacular framing
for the trees of the
patio and courtyard.

36. The partition wall
holding the fireplace
is the only opaque
element separating
the living area from
the patio.

40. Trought the book-
case.
A long blind corridor
emphasized by
“invidisible” doors
separates the rooms
of the sleeping area
from the bathrooms
and closets.
At the far end, the
space is definitely
concluded by the
zenith lighting
coming from the
overhead skylights
of the terrace.

42. A cement tank
integrated with
the floor enjoys a
privileged view over
the tree courtyard.
A large sliding
window turns the
tank into a small
swimming pool
immersed in green.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
43. In winter, the
architecture of the
site is revealed by
the naked trees:
the Liege bluestone
covering the
courtyard and the
north façade, the
grey plaster of the
main façades and
the black aluminum
of the fixtures.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
44. Liege bluestone
personalized in
different shapes are
used for cladding
the entire surface of
the courtyard and
the north façade
hiding the access to
the technical rooms.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
45. From the courtyard
to the terrace, up to
the roof garden:
the city
context unveils
progressively.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
46. Looking down from
the terrace:
the contrast
between the tree-
lined courtyard with
the city context
really sticks out.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
47. The project
establishes an
ambivalent dialogue
with a difficult
context:
it closes itself
off from it by
constructing a high
wall of neutral
colours (defining
the typical artificial/
natural space of the
main patio);
it offers itself to it
through a luxuriant
roof garden
where views open
unexpectedly over
the surrounding
urban landscape.
“La casa tra gli alberi”, Torino
50. Injections of green
areas can generate
reactions leading to
an improvement of
the entire organism,
the city.
The house among
the trees has been
an example, a
testing ground on a
micro scale of the
city we dream
about.
Urban acupuncture
53. The rennovation
of the courtyards,
repeted, replicated
in the urban fabric.
Urban acupuncture
54. If you repeat and
replicate the form
of the courtyards in
the different districts
of the city, you get a
green surface whose
extension is greater
than the Valentino
Park.

59. L’architettura, a volte,
è solo un mezzo
per contemplare un
paesaggio. L’edificio
è concepito come

60. L’edificio si sviluppa
verso l’alto con due
piani fuori terra per
ridurre al minimo
(5mx5m) il suo
ingombro sul lotto
terrazzato. A sud
l’ampia finestra
a tutta altezza,
si appoggia sulla

in pietra locale del
piano terra, quasi
a voler superare le
chiome degli ulivi
e cercare l’ideale
affaccio verso il
mare.
“Casa tra gli ulivi”, Montegrazie, Imperia
61. Gli spazi abitativi
cercano una
interazione fisica
e visiva con il
territorio.
Gli accessi e i vani
finestrati della zona
giorno, a piano
primo, e della
zona notte a piano
terra, si orientano
rispettivamente
in direzione
perpendicolare e
parallela alle fasce
adattandosi alla
morfologia del
territorio, evitando
movimenti terra e
salvaguardando gli
ulivi esistenti.
