The Bowsprit Advertising Agency needed a retrofitted office space with
architectural details to fit it’s forward thinking methodology in brand
and ad creation. A ceiling system of fanned beams was created to point
the user to related areas of the office. Dynamic patterns in frosted glass
partition walls allows for different levels of privacy between spaces
and changing floor materials creates movement through the office.
Custom swiveling work panels are spaced in between Resolve work-
station systems, outfitted with state-of-the-art workspace solutions.
The materials used throughout the office are simple and sustainable in
as many instances as possible. Recessed lighting above the beam ceil-
ing system plays with shadows as light streams between the beams,
once again adding dynamic movement throughout the interiors.

The conference room is located off the lobby in the
corner of the building so as to receive maximum nat-
ural light. The conference table is custom built with
foldable interlocking arms that will allow for multi-
ple configurations. The carpet pattern was chosen to
create movement and interest and to compliment the
fuscia wall covering and modern artwork. A wood
covered drop panel from the ceiling houses task light-
ing over the conference table and connects a pro-
jector system to the electrical sources in the ceiling.

The lobby is the first impression of the office and the
forward thinking Bowsprit concept. The reception desk
sits in front of a prism wall, reflecting light in many
directions and in many colors. The prism wall creates a
divider between the reception and seating areas where
guests wait in designer chairs, sofas, and benches while
watching the city outside the lobby windows. A cus-
tom lighting fixture hangs over the coffee table and
continues to play with light in intriguing ways. Fine
art and sculpture adorns the space while the ceiling
and floor systems point toward the nearby art gallery.

EXHIBIT DESIGN
nest technology exhibit
The Nest exhibit design was created to educate and sell the
recently developed smart technology ithat includes the Nest Thermo-
stat and Nest Protect Smoke Detector. The concept for the exhibit was
to create the feeling of being surrounded or protected by the “nest”
of metal arms. The folding arms surrounding the exhibit are made
of metal mesh which serves as another level of abstraction of the
materials of a nest. Inside the enclosure are rounded walls in the shape
of a square to reflect the shape of the Nest Protect Smoke Detector.
On the walls are interactive elements that teach the user about the
Nest Protect product. In the center is a circular pilar with a hands-on
interactive component showcasing the Nest Thermostat. A comput-
er kiosk is also included in the exhibit space that can serve as a fur-
ther way to share information or to sign users up for Nest products.

The elevations and detail drawings further illustrate
how the mesh arms wrap around the exhibit from
different angles and intersecting different portions
of the exhibit. The first detail drawing illustrates the
central pilar and what it would like if it were cut by
section. The floor plan also helps to have further under-
standing of the overall layout with the rounded edge
square exhibit boards and how the central pilar serves
as a terminating point for the folded arms, much like
a tree serves as the terminating point for all branches.

reinhardt renovation
The Reinhardt Renovation project was an exercise in remodeling an ex-
isting residential floorplan to meet client needs and desires with an up-
datedlayoutanddesign.TheReinhardtswantedamoreopenplan,more
efficient circulation throughout the house, and updated and sustainable
materials and furniture. Almost the entire right side of the house was
re-organized as the public side of the house, leaving all the bedrooms
and quiet areas to the left side of the house. A large living wall was
placed in the foyer, fly ash concrete floors were poured throughout the
entire public side of the house, more windows were added for addition-
al daylighting, and sustainably grown wood was used to cover many
of the walls. 95% of all the furnishings and finishes chosen are made
sustainably and all lighting was planned to code for energy efficiency.

hi-tech boutique hotel
This hospitality project had the requirement of using hi-tech ele-
ments to create a boutique hotel for modern times and modern cli-
ents. The areas focused on were the lobby, the lobby bar, a restaurant
and the restaurant bar. Some of the hi-tech elements used were a light
up floor with step sensor, the iBar countertop that allows for inter-
activity while sitting at the bar, LED lighting tape, 3-D wall panels,
and intricately embossed wood panels. Other materials chosen were
meant to give a modern and sleek atmosphere to the space. For in-
stance, in the restaurant, the flooring is made of fence metal and the
ceiling looks as though thousands of tiny metal rods are about to
rain down on those eating below. In the lobby, the light-up floor is
only one hi-tech element that will catch users by surprise. The rest
of the room is lit with dramatic lighting and adorned with sleek art.

cotton mill boutique hotel
The final project is a boutique hotel located in the heart of down-
town Raleigh, North Carolina, using the concept of connection
to link those in the building to each other. Connecting design
elements were employed such as a two story lobby space with a
lightwell, two story waterfall and the second floor overlooking the
lobby, transparent floors and walkways that visually connect the two
storys to each other, a restaurant ceiling made of connecting wood
pieces, and function spaces separated by glass partitions. A large
parlor space was also designed as a common area between two guest
rooms. Different funtion spaces of the parlor are separated, but still
connected, through the use of glass partitions, glass brick, frosted
glass doors, and views of the space through colonnaded openings.
