Communities
7. Overarching Project Goal
By 2020, the NASA@ My Library project will increase
and sustain the availability of SMD-focused learning
experiences for underserved audiences through
• stakeholder engagement centered around high-
visibility NASA, Earth, celestial, and library events;
• professional development; and
• resource and experience development.
8. Strategic Focus Areas
• Public Library Infrastructure
• Rural and Underserved Audiences
• Connections to NASA Science
Professionals and Volunteers
• NASA, Earth, Library and Celestial Events
24. What is the opportunity gap?
• Over the last 40 years, upper-income parents have
increased the amount they spend on their kids’
enrichment activities, like tutoring and extra curriculars,
by $5,300 a year.
• Lower-income parents have only been able to increase
their investment by $480, adjusted for inflation.
25. The STEAM Opportunity
STEAM education:
• Develops critical and
creative thinkers
• Increases science literacy
• Enables the next
generation of innovators
26. Shifting SRP to SLC
• Broaden library program from a traditional READING program to
an active LEARNING program
• Include museum’s STEAM learning and design thinking for
children of all ages
• Increase proficiency of STEAM instruction for library staff
• Engage parents, teachers and caregivers
• Utilize teens as STEAM ambassadors
35. Summer Learning Challenge Results:
Compared to the prediction of where they
would be at the end of the school year, SCL-
involved youth systematically out-perform
their expectations, in particular those:
• In early grades
• With higher levels of participation
SLC participants gain:
• 20% gain in a school year’s mathematics
proficiency
• 15% gain in a school year’s reading
proficiency
