1. Aims and Considerationssheet
ExistingProducts:
How many existingartefactsdo you feel you will needto look at?
I needtolookat a greatnumberor AD campaignsthat are relevanttorecyclinginorderto create a
surveythatcan be respondedtobythe public.Iam aimingto doenoughresearchto be able to
create questionsthatcan be answeredbyeveryone(fromjust underthe age of 18 to 60+). I will be
lookingforthe mostrecentinformationonthe subjecttobe able to buildamore accurate survey
to alsoget betterresponses.
What kindsof artefacts are you expectingtolook at?
The kindof artefactsI will be lookingatwill be anythatrelate torecyclingforexample the process
of recycling, statisticsof howmanypeople recycle andsoon.Thiswouldhelpme tounderstand
howthe company ‘Recycle Now’operate andthe range of waysthat theyuse inorderto raise
awarenessof the repercussionsof notrecyclingandalsohow theyare able toencourage people to
wantto be apart of change.
What elementswill youlookat to helpyou withyour research?
To helpme withmyresearchI will be lookingatavailable sourcesonline thatcanprovide me with
relevantinformationtorecycling.Iwill be findingcompaniesthatoperate similarlyto‘Recycle
Now’inorderto see the differencesandtogainknowledge of the successful andpossible notso
successful aspectsof encouragingpeopletoRecycle
Primary Research:
How many people wouldyou hope to questionas part of your primary research?
For my primaryresearchIplan to posta linkwhich will make my researchavailableforeveryone
whowishesto take part on my Facebookaccount. I will alsobe postingthe same linkonmy
Twitteraccountwhichwill make mysurveyavailabletoa widerrange of people asgenerally,my
Facebookaccountis to connectwithfriendsandfamily;whereasTwitterisconnect withabroader
range of people whoaren'tnecessarilyfriendsorfamily.Iuse Twitterasa formof networking.
What methodswill you use?
One methodIwill use isa survey, the surveywill containarange of questionswhichwill be
relevanttothe topic(Recycling). The surveywill give me aninsightof how manypeople recycle
and whatbarriers(if any) theyface.AnothermethodI coulduse isinterviews,thiswouldmean
that I wouldneedtogathera group of people andaskthema listof questionstogeta firsthand
responsesaboutthe topic.
Couldthere be issuesin gettingaccess to people affectedbyyour chosensocial issue?
Recyclinghasbeenaroundforsuch a longtime that the majorityof people know whatitis, they
may notknowa lotaboutit but mostpeople are aware thatit exists.Thismeansthatwhenit
comesto gettingaccessto people thatitwill be mucheasier tofindpeople affectedbythe issue,
due to there beingsucha wide audience.
How will you know ifyour research has beensuccessful?
I will knowthatmyresearchis successful whenIamable toanalyse the results gainedon
‘surveymonkey.com’.Ithinkthatmy survey will be successful if Ican see a patternwithinthe
results(forexample:anoticeable amountof people thathave chosen the same orsimilar
answers). Thiswill giveme plentytoworkwithandhelpme todetermine how manypeople
aroundme actuallyRecycle, itwill alsoshow me how muchtheyknow aboutit.
2. Considerations:
Whymight you needto be sensitive whencarrying out research on social action issues?
The effectsof that notrecyclingcan have are horrible, especiallyonanimals.Since thereisnoage
limitonwhocan Recycle andthat school childrenasyoungas 6 can be taught aboutit I thinkthat
whentalkingaboutthe effectsthatcanbe hadon animals,Ineedtobe sensitivearoundthis
particularpart of the subject.
Couldyou face any problemswhen trying to research social action issues?Ifso, is there a way to
overcome these?
One problemIcouldpotentiallyhave whenresearchingthissocial actionissue isnotreceiving
manyresponses, meaningthatIdo not have much to analyse.Iwill domybestto overcome thisby
ensuringthatI make mysurveyavailable toasmany people aspossible.AnotherproblemIcould
face is nothaving/ knowingenoughinformationtocarryout anyresearchon a social actionissue.
I will overcome thisbyensuringthatIdo enoughresearchaboutrecyclingbefore creatingthe
surveyor anydesignsforthe logoand posteretc.
Where wouldyou expectyour finishedpiecestobe displayedand distributed?
I would expectmyrecyclinglogostobe displayedonmaterialsthatcanbe recycled,Iwouldalso
expectthe logotobe displayedonmerchandise, inmagazines(aspartof one of the promotional /
advertisementpage breaksthatare foundinmagazines). Iwouldalsoexpecttosee mylogo,
posterand billboardonpublicbinsandotherrelevantplaces.
What fundingissuesmighta social action organisationface?
Recyclingismainlyfinanciallysupportedbythe governmentandlocal authorities,there are
charities /organisations suchas‘Wrap’ whichfundwaste reduction.Wrapisa supporterand
encouragerof recycling. One issue arecyclingorganisationmayface isfundingthe necessary
equipmentneededinordertoraise awarenesswiththe use of postersandinformative leaflets,
these type of methods(posters, leafletsetc) costmoneytomake and thiscouldbe an issue
consideringsome don’tsee recyclingasafundable cause due topotentiallynotknowingenough
aboutit to eventhinkthatitneedsfunding.
What ethical considerationsmight you needto think about?
I thinkI needtotake in to considerationthatnoteveryoneisinapositionwhere theycanRecycle
for a range of differentreasonsandcircumstances. One way itcanbe shownthat people’s
circumstanceshave beentaken intoconsiderationisbyensuringthatIam sensitivewhile
persuadingandcampaigningforpeopletorecycle.AnotherwayIcan show thisis by notbeingbias
and byfindingreasonableandpossible ways(if any) for peopletorecycle.
How could social, personal and political issuesaffectyour research?
I personallydon’tthinkthatthere wouldbe anypolitical issuesbutthere couldbe some social and
personal issues.Bysocial,Iamreferringtosocial media.Thiscouldbe anissue formy research
results,forexample;if Iwasn’table touse social mediafully(whichwouldaffectmyresearch) orif
I didn’thave enoughconnectionswithpeople onsocial mediatobe able to geta good analysis
fromthe resultsgained.Asforpersonal issues,Ithinkthe mainissue thatIcouldhave relatingto
thisispeople’sattitudeandalsotheircircumstances.WhatImeanby attitude is,people mayhave
3. a bad attitude towardsrecyclingandnotreallycooperate withmyformof research,whichcould
affectitif it is incompleteandsoon. As forcircumstances, some people maynotbe able to
complete myresearchdue tothis.
How could the communitycharacteristics and theirresourcesaffect your research?
I thinkthat the characteristicsof the communityandalsotheirresourcesplayabig part withinmy
social action cause. I thinkthat the communitycharacteristicsare importantbecause havingalot
of people close by thatrecycle couldpotentially persuade otherstofollowsuitbydoingthe same.
Where as, beingina communitywhere nobodyrecycles couldputpeople inapositionwherethey
feel theyshoulddothe same (not recycle).Thiscouldaffectmyresearchespecially if Ihandedit
(surveysetc) outtoa communitythatdidn’trecycle verymuch,if thiswasthe case thenI could
expectmyresearchto be totallyincomplete orpartcomplete (especiallyif the audience which
receivesthe researchdoesn’t have muchinterestinrecycling). Asforresources,eachcommunity’s
council providesrecyclingfacilitiesbutthere isacharge whenabinis requested. Thiscouldbe a
reasonwhysome don’trecycle, and thiscouldalsoaffectmy research because some people may
actuallywantto recycle butnot have the moneyforthe facilitiestodoso;thisinevitablymakesit
difficultforsome tocomplete myresearch.
