An Introduction to Agro-
meteorology
Introduction
 Environment the aggregate of all external conditions
& influence affecting the life & development of an
organism, plays a dominate role in crop production.
 Climatology: is the science that seeks to describe &
explain the nature of climate, how it differs from place
& how it is related to human activities. It deals with
average conditions representative of long term state
of the atmosphere & its variability.
 Meteorology: as physics of the weather phenomena.
It specially concerned with the physics of weather
phenomena & deals with day to day atmospheric
conditions & their causes.
 Greek word “Meteoro” means ‘above the earth’s surface’
(atmosphere) “logy” means ‘indicating science’. Branch
of science dealing with that of atmosphere is known as
meteorology.

Introduction
 Agro-climatology: the science that deals with the
aspects of climatology having direct relevance to
agriculture. It seeks to relate climatic regimes to
agriculture production.
 Agro-meteorology: as a science investigating the
meteorologic, climatologic & hydrologic conditions
that are significant for agriculture owing to their
interaction with the object & processes of agricultural
production.
 Another definitions…..
 It is a branch of meteorology that examines the effect &
impact of weather & climate on crops, livestock &
various agricultural operations.
 Branch of meteorology, which investigates the
relationship of plants & animals to the physical
environment.
Intro………..
 It is the science of meteorology to service of
agriculture for sensible use of land, accelerate
production of food & to avoid irreversible abuse of
land resources.
 It is the study of response of living organisms to
the physical environment. The living organisms
are cultivated plants, livestock, insects &
microorganisms.
 Task of meteorology is to apply relevant
meteorological skill to helps farmers to make
most efficient use of physical environment for
profitable crop production.
Importance to Crop
 Helps in planning cropping patterns/systems.
 Reduction in waste of capital.
 Manipulation selection of sowing dates for
optimum crop yields.
 Reducing losses of applied chemicals and
fertilizers.
 Judicious irrigation to crops.
 Efficient harvesting of all crops.
 Reducing or eliminating outbreak of pests and
diseases.
 Efficient management of soils which are formed
out of weather action.
Climate & Weather
Pertains to the day to
day state of the
atmosphere at a
particular place.
Refers to specific
instant of time to and
place.
It is always changing
& differs from time to
time.
Pertains to the
atmosphere over a
given region.
Refers to a large
region & for a long
period of time.
It is more or less
stable and differs from
region to region.
Scope of Agro- meteorology
 Its helps in improving the crop production as it is
concerned with the interaction between
meteorological & hydrological factors on one
hand agriculture on other hand
 The scope of agro-meteorology is to make use of
meteorology knowledge for sustainable
agricultural system.
