AGING PARENTS
Meaning
The need and expectation of
parents
Parent – adolescent conflict
• Old model
• New model
Adolescent expectation
Role of parents in adolescent
difficulty
How are the elderly treated in
Islam?
MEANING OF AGING PARENTS
• It may mean that the parent should no longer live alone.
NEED AND EXPECTATION OF
PARENTS
• The birth of a child will save a failing marriage
• As a possession or extension of the parent, the child will think,
feel and behave like the parents did in their childhood.
• Children will take care of parents in old age.
• Parents can expect respect and get obedience from their
children.
• Having a child means that the parents will always have
someone who loves them and is their best friends.
CON…….
• Having a child gives the parents a ‘second chance’ to achieve
what they should have achieved.
• If parents learn the right techniques, they can mold their
children into what they want.
• It’s always the parents’ fault when children fail.
• Mother are naturally better parents than fathers
• Parenting is an instinct and requires no training.
PARENT- ADOLESCENT
CONFLICT
• The adolescent compares her parents to a ideal standard and
the criticize their flaws
• The adolescent demands logical explanation for comments
and discipline.
• When adolescent changing occur, parents tend to clampdown
and put more pressure on he adolescent to conform parental
standard.
• Parents often expect their adolescent to become mature adult
over a night.
OLD MODEL OF PARENT
ADOLESCENT RELATION SHIP
• Suggested that as adolescent mature they detached
themselves from parents and move into a world of autonomy
apart from parents.
• Suggested that parent-adolescent conflict intense and
stressful throughout adolescence.
NEW MODEL OF PARENT-
ADOLESCENT RELATIONSHIP
It emphasizes that parents serve as important attachment figures and support system as adolescents explore a
wider, more complex social world.
It also emphasize that, in most families, parents-adolescent conflict is moderate rather than severe and that
everyday negotiation and minor dispute are normal and can serve the positive development function of helping
the adolescent make the transition from childhood dependency to adult independence.
ADOLESCENT EXPECTATION
Parents need to accept and respect the teen as an individual totally and unconditionally.
Parents serve as role models for their children by being sensitive and responsive to each one and by
showing interest in each child and in his/her experiences
Provide environments that encourage exploration by guiding, supporting, listening, questioning and
supplying appropriate information that encourages teenagers to think for themselves.
Be positive in your approach and communication by giving directions or suggestions in a positive way

Making the time to listen to and try to understand the teen’s fears or concerns;Making
setting appropriate boundaries for behavior that are consistently enforced;Setting
encouraging the teen to participate in one or more school activities;Encouraging
meeting with teachers, and school counselor, asking how they can support the
teen’s learning environment, and sharing their expectations for the child’s
future;
Meeting
CON….
providing a supportive home and school
environment that clearly values education;
helping the child think about career options by
arranging for visits to local companies and
colleges, picking up information on careers and
courses, and encouraging an internship or career-
oriented part-time job;
encouraging the teen to volunteer in the
community or to participate in community groups
HOW ARE THE ELDERLY
TREATED IN ISLAM?
Praise be to Allaah.
• Islam is the religion of compassion and justice, a religion that
teaches perfect morals and forbids bad conduct, a religion that grants
man his dignity, if he adheres to the laws of Allaah.
• There can be no doubt that Islam has given the elderly a special
status, as there are texts which urge Muslims to respect and honour
them.
CARE OF THE ELDERLY IN ISLAM IS BASED ON
A NUMBER OF FOCAL POINTS, INCLUDING THE
FOLLOWING:
• – Respecting the elderly and honouring them are characteristics
of the Muslim society
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Part of
glorifying Allaah is honouring the grey-haired Muslim.” Narrated by
Abu Dawood, 4843;
classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 4053.
Enjoining good treatment of parents:
• This is one of the ways in which the elderly are cared for in
Islam, because parents are usually elderly. The command to
honour one’s parents is accompanied with the command to
believe in Allaah alone (Tawheed) and the prohibition on
associating others with Him (shirk) in many verses,
for example Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
• “Worship Allaah and join none with Him (in worship); and do
good to parents…”
Enjoining honouring one’s parents’ friends even
after the parents have passed away, and regarding
that as part of honouring one’s parents
• The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)
said: “Part of honouring (one’s parents) is to keep in touch with
your father’s friend.” Al-Albaani said in al-Silsilah al-Saheehah
(23030): it is saheeh when all its isnaads are taken into
consideration.
