Agenda
• Scenario Summary
• How I would implement the least intrusive
intervention
• How could I respect the students confidentiality
• How would I recognize the client’s multicultural
ethical behavior
• Conclusion
Summary
• Stacy was a H.S. counselor and Lee was a
Vietnamese student who was having difficulties
being honest to his father about his future study
plans. Lee’s father wants him to go to college and
medical school after, but Lee does not want to go to
medical school and he is not even sure he wants to
go to college. During his session with the counselor
he started to be slow and deliberate in his
conversation style. The counselor then referred Lee
to remedial speech classes. Stacy the counselor
gives Lee the homework of going home and telling
his father how he feels.
Least Intrusive Solution
• Instead of having Lee go tell his father right
away, I would ask Lee to reflect on what other
things he is interested in.
• What he really wants to do, and maybe see if
what he wants to do could be combined with
going to college
• I would tell him to come up with a plan of his
future to take to his father.
Respect the Students
Confidentiality
• I would have Lee research some colleges and
different programs on his own.
• I would tell him that we could set up a meeting
with his family (it could be easier)
• It is obvious that Lee is afraid of his father so I
would involve the school psychiatrist to get to
the root of the problem.
How to Recognize the
Multicultural Ethical Dilemma
• I would definetly have to talk to him about his
father’s believes.
• Being Vietnamese families are very strict and
put a lot of pressure to their kids.
• Vietnamese parents don’t really believe in
intervention from other people specially
women in their family business.
Conclusion
• In Vietnamese traditions the most important
expectation is the respect for the elders. Hence,
the family decisions were made by the parents
and grandparents.
• Vietnamese placed a higher value on education
rather than on material success. That the reason
why parents encouraged their children to study
and excel in their education. Vietnamese parents
had a high regard for it which was considered as a
way for family advancement.
