Types of Family Structure
• Nuclear Family- the traditional type of family structure
-Children in nuclear families often receive strength and
stability from the two-parent structure (when one
parent needs a break, as we all do, the other parent
can step in).
• Single-parent family- The single-parent family is the
biggest alteration society has seen in terms of the
changes in family structures. Single-parent families are
often close and find ways to work together to solve
problems, such as dividing up household chores.
• Extended Family- This family includes many relatives living
together and working toward common goals. This type of
family structure may form due to financial difficulties or
because older relatives are unable to care for themselves
alone.
• Families without children- While many people think of a
family as including children, there are couples who either
cannot or choose not to have children. The family without
children is sometimes the "forgotten family," as it does not
meet the traditional standards set by society. Childless
families consist of two partners living and working together.
Many families without children take on the responsibility of
pet ownership or have extensive contact with their nieces
and nephews.
• Blended family- which involves two separate families
merging into one new unit. Stepfamilies are about as
common as the nuclear family, although they tend to
have unique challenges, such as adjustment periods
and discipline issues.
• Grandparent family- The grandparent family unit, also
known as a skipped-generation family, is sometimes
due to parents' death, addiction, abandonment, or
being deemed unfit parents. In these situations, the
parents may be present in the child's life, but they are
not the child's primary guardian.
General Functions of the Family
•Procreation: bringing new members of the
family into the world for continuity of the family
and the society.
•Provision: The basic necessities of life such as
food, shelter and clothing are provided in the
family.
•Moral Guidance: Training of the children in line
with the acceptable norms of the society in good
character formation
•Education: Family helps to give formal and
informal education to children.
•Peaceful Co-existence: Peace in the larger
society starts from home. The parents settle
disputes that may arise among family
members.
•Means of Identity: Family name is born by all
members of the family which makes them to
be different and give due recognition in the
society.
•Communal life: Members of the family bond
together and see themselves as being
bound together by love. They share
together in the times of good and bad.
5 Obligations of Parents to their Children
1. Show Love and Affection- Parents must show love
and affection for their children. By giving love and
affection, children will feel protected. In addition, love
can strengthen the bond between parents and children.
Parents can also see the development and growth of
children. By receiving love from parents, children will
learn how to express their feelings and can help build
healthy relationships with other people.
2. Teaching Religious and Social Values- The obligation
of parents to children is to introduce religious and
social values. The family is the first environment for
children. Parents must teach children social education
so that children can live in society. Religious and social
education is the first education that parents must teach
their children.
3. Shaping the Child's Personality- Children will grow
according to what their parents taught them. Giving
children examples of good behavior can shape the
child's personality to be good.
• 4. Helping Children Grow Independently- One of the
obligations of parents is to help children grow
independently. Over time, children will enter the
community. Children will socialize with people around
them. Therefore, children must be taught to live
independently.
• Developing Children's Potential- Every child must have
the potential or ability that stands out. Parents must give
children the opportunity to develop their potential. The
important thing for parents is not to demand that
children fulfill their parents' wishes, but to ask them to
give their best according to their efforts.
8 Obligations of Children to Parents
1. Love and Respect Them- It is not only parents who
have the responsibility to love their children. Every
child must also show their affection to their
parents. In addition to showing affection, children
must also respect their parents by speaking politely
and taking care of their feelings.
2. Protecting and Taking Care of Them- As time goes
by, parents who previously looked strong and
healthy will get old. As children, we are obliged to
care for and look after our parents as they took
care of us.
3. Obeying Your Parents- Parents must have done
everything to give the best to their children. Therefore,
children must be obedient and devoted to their
parents, not just respect them.
4. Asking for Parents' Permission and Blessings- If you
need something, it would be nice to ask for permission
and blessings from your parents. You don't have to
need something major to ask for their permission and
blessings, it can be small things like going to school,
meeting with friends,and doing assignments.
5. Helping Parents' Work- Helping your parents' work is
also the responsibility of a child. By helping your
parents, you don't only learn to do many things, but
you also learn to make your parents happy.
6. Keeping the Good Name and Child's Mandate of
Parents- No one is perfect, neither are your parents.
There may be bad things about them. But, try not to
talk bad about your parents with outsiders. Keeping the
good name and mandate of parents means keeping and
carrying out the advice of your parents.
7. Coming Immediately When Your Parents Call- Keep in
mind that visiting your parents is also a child's
responsibility and to respect them. Take a moment to
come home even if you are working on something.
Because, immediately coming to meet the parents who
called is a form of obedience to your parents.
8. Provide for Your Parents If You Can- At an
increasingly old and vulnerable age, they can't always
work all the time. If you have an income and are able to
provide for your parents, then you can give them
money as much as you can.
