The African IXP Association (AF-IX) was founded in 2014 to coordinate Internet exchange point (IXP) operators across Africa. AF-IX aims to help IXPs maximize their value and improve connectivity on the continent. It conducted the first African IXP Benchmark survey in 2015, which showed over 522 ports and 59 Gbps of traffic across 20 responding IXPs located in 22 countries. AF-IX provides best practices and recommendations to help IXPs succeed, such as maintaining neutral locations, transparent governance, and offering value-added services like statistics and route servers.
