This document discusses the real costs of public Internet exchange points (IXPs) and questions whether IXP costs are decreasing with scale and technology innovation. It notes that while switch port costs have decreased by 90% in 5 years, IXP member costs have not steadily decreased. The document hypothesizes that failure to innovate on technology and an over-engineered product suite, as well as high marketing and international expansion costs, may be to blame for the lack of decreasing costs. It questions whether members should have a say in how their fees are reinvested by IXPs.
