2. Forestry Sector Research and Development Project (FSR&DP) and
Strengthening of Forest Products Research (SFPR). The improvement
works for infrastructure of PFI and its four field stations are in progress.
In addition, Under the tree Improvement component research is under
way on species like Neem, Paulownia, Chalgoza, Walnut and Almond
both at nursery and field level in different ecological zones.
In order to optimize the use of water for six important tree species
including eucalyptus, a study has been laid out at PFI and the irrigations
are being applied on regular intervals and monitored. This will indicate
the optimum use of water in comparison to eucalyptus on completion of
the study.
Under the SFPR project a data base on forest products marketing and
economics has been established for planning strategies in the forest
products and to interact with international organizations
Introduction of Medical Herbs and Spices as Crops is being sponsored
by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Government of
Pakistan. The project aims the mass production of profitable drug plant
species and spices on commercial and public land through community
participation

3. ON GOING RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
 Selection and propagation of important indigenous and exotic forest
tree species to increase wood production.
 Development of dry zone afforestation techniques for arid and semi
arid areas.
 Control of forest tree pests and diseases for healthy forest production
and minimize wood losses.
 Production and distribution of quality seeds of forest tree and grass
species for afforestation/ reforestation purposes.
 Biological rehabilitation of waterlogged and saline areas.
 Preparation of volume and yield tables of all commercial forest tree
species.
 Production of disease free silk seed through selection and breeding.
 Develop integrated silkworm disease management modules.
 Utilization of poor quality woods for manufacturing panel products.
 Testing of woody and non-woody plant material for pulp and paper.
 Promotion of tree growth on farmlands to increase production of
forestry goods and services.
 To develop measures for the control of soil erosion and land slides.

4.  Economic and financial analysis of different forest management
options.
 Compilation of forestry statistics to provide secondary data for
forestry planning.
 Forestry extension and publicity
 Population dynamics, habitat studies and conservation of important
wildlife species.
 Study of biodiversity threats and measures of conservation.
 Forest soil classification for selection of suitable sites for
afforestation.
 Management and rehabilitation of rangelands to increase forage and
livestock production.
 Application of Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques for
forest resource inventory and management.
Keeping in view the present day demand of forestry goods and services,
this institute is developing and providing technology, education and
creating public awareness on environmental protection, biodiversity
conservation and development of forestry sector in Pakistan. We
endeavor to complete our mission vision and objectives through public
participation.
