Affordance refers to the perceived and actual properties of an object that determine how it can be used. The concept was introduced by perceptual psychologist James J. Gibson to explain how living things perceive and use objects in their environment. Affordances depend equally on the capabilities of the acting animal and on the physical properties of the environment.
