• The Gospels of Mathew and Luke tell the story of
the birth of Jesus. These stories are called the

4. • The liturgical color in Advent is purple (violet),
which symbolizes repentance and preparation
5. • Symbols used during Advent:
The Advent wreath – each candle represents an
attribute – hope, peace, joy and love. The white
center candle represents Jesus; the greens
represent everlasting life
6. • The Jesse Tree uses symbols for the ancestors of
Jesus to create a family tree
• Jesse was the father of the great King David of
the Old Testament. He is often looked upon as
the first person in the genealogy of Jesus.
