3rd Ordinary Meeting of the SSP – Quito (Colombia)
Editor's Notes
For me it is a pleasure to be here again presenting the achievements of the region in this last year
In case of pillar 1, we focus on the VGSSM and we socialized the aim of the Guidlines during the 3rd Ordinary Meeting and also we presented a case example Recognizing the most important biomes and Land Use Type per region (and country), focus on the VGSSM practices that are being applied and the VGSSM practices recommended per region
Now we are working on the Implementation of a survey including recommendations, and possible activities to continue moving forward in adjusting research and outreach programs…
The FP is Pedro Luiz de Freytas (Brazil)
LUT is Land Use Types (is more used by FAO than Land Use Change for this purpose).
The proposed actions of the survey have been designed taking into account the short term (2018-2019) and the medium term (2020-2024).
In case of Pillar 2, We conducted a meeting to discuss legal frameworks of the countries of the region, and we recognized several legal and politcial needs, for example: Rules of procedures
The inclusion of penalties in specific soils conservation laws, Civil responsibility (prevention), Financial support for audit and monitoring, Public awareness, Training of officers and producers,
Political will to formulate and apply rules and specific laws.
Also we still work on a survey about formal education on soils
And now I introduced you something new that it is carried out by a new partner Is an educational project. The educational project is a collective initiative that is focused on soils valorization and on the awareness of the problems that affect it. The project uses a Learning material KIT, which includes some FAO materials and publications on soil.
The FP is María Julia Cabello (Argentine)
“Procedural rules” significa “reglas procesales” (del Derecho Procesal).
“Penalties” significa “sanciones”; “Audit” significa “fiscalización”; “Officers” significa “funcionarios”.
El proyecto educativo es una iniciativa conjunta, que apunta a la valorización de este recurso no renovable y a concientizar sobre las problemáticas que lo afectan.
In case of Pillar 3, we started with a survey to Review research initiatives on soils and request agroecological areas by country, Request research priorities, Contact universities about research projects to recognize gaps.
With the information available, we identified several project by biome, types of solis and we ordered them by different discipline of soil like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Fertility, Management
This work is very hard and we need the compromise of all partners because we need the information available.
The FP is Mary Selva Viera Vargas (Bolivia)
Other universities from Bolivia had been analized, so the information presented is a small part of the work realized.
In case of Pillar 4 we made a lot of different thinks: Federico Olmedo, our focal point in Pillar 4, participated in a collaborative manner as an author in the Coolbook, he assisted technically to develop national SOC Maps, he teached on Digital mapping of soils. And in this case we conducted a workshop in Quito last october.
Next we will: Relaunch of SISLAC, Take part on the Global Soil Organic Carbon (GSOC17) Map during 2017, Conduct Regional workshop on SOC national maps (technical assistance from ASS-P4)
Participation in the GSM 2017 Conference in Russia:
The FP is Federico Olmedo (Argentine)
The FP is Jefé Leáo Ribeiro (Brazil)
Hoe go on
The Regional Technical Cooperation Project (TCP) “Capacity Development of Soils Information for the Sustainable Management of Natural Resources in South American Countries” was approved, and it is ready to begin. The first action will be the Regional workshop on SOC national maps that will held at Colombia.
The regional TCP has two main components: one is focus on soil information system which is the core of the project, and the other component focus on the implementacion of the VGSSM.
7 from 10 countries of the region are going to take part of the project: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia,Ecuador, Perú, Uruguay
The TCP is called “Capacity Development of Soils Information for the sustainable management of natural resources in South American Countries” Desarrollo de capacidades en información de suelos para el manejo sostenible de los recursos naturales en los países de América del Sur.
We have schedule same meetings and workshops, is not a exhaustvie list, but we want to point the Geomatic South America Workshop at Instituto Geográfico Agustín Codazzi (IGAC) – Republic of Colombia, the Fourth Ordinary Meeting of the SSP,
Define the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Soil Management for every Pillar
Soil workshop at 7th World Congress on Conservation Agriculture (7-WCCA) and XXV AAPRESID Congress – City of Rosario – Argentine Republic – 1-4 August 2017
XXXVI Brazilian Congress of Soil Science – Belem do Pará, Federative Republic of Brazil. From July 30th to August 04th, 2017.
21st World Congress of Soil Science (21-WCSS) – 12-17 August 2018
The Fourth Ordinary Meeting of the SSP is planed for October 2017 (tentative month)
