This document summarizes discussions from the 3rd Meeting of the Global Soil Laboratory Network (GLOSOLAN). It describes how GLOSOLAN interacts with Pillar 4 of the Global Soil Partnership to develop the Global Soil Information System (GloSIS). Pillar 5 aims to harmonize soil data collection methods to support GloSIS. GloSIS will be a federated system that respects national ownership of soil data. It will integrate national soil information systems using common standards. GLOSOLAN can contribute to GloSIS by providing functions to standardize soil indicators and classifications.

GSP Pillars of Action
1. Promote sustainable management of soil resources and improved
global governance for soil protection and sustainable productivity;
2. Encourage investment, technical cooperation, policy, education,
awareness and extension in soils;
3. Promote targeted soil research development focusing on identified
gaps, priorities and synergies among economic, environmental and social
dimensions;
4. Enhance the quality and availability of soil data and information:
collection, analysis, validation, reporting, monitoring, integration with
other disciplines;
5. Harmonization of methods, measurements and indicators for the
sustainable management and protection of soil resources.

Pillar 4 & Pillar 5
1. Promote sustainable management of soil resources and improved
global governance for soil protection and sustainable productivity;
2. Encourage investment, technical cooperation, policy, education,
awareness and extension in soils;
3. Promote targeted soil research development focusing on identified
gaps, priorities and synergies among economic, environmental and social
dimensions;
Pillar 4, together with member countries developing an enduring and
authoritative global soil information system to monitor and forecast the
condition of the Earth's soil resources (GloSIS)
Pillar 5. Harmonization of methods, measurements and indicators for
the sustainable management and protection of soil resources.

GSP - Pillar 5
Pillar 5 is the basic foundation of
Pillar 4, and enables Pillar 4 to build
GloSIS Federation.
Pillar 5 providing mechanisms for
the collation, analysis and exchange
of consistent and comparable global
soil data and information
6. 3rd Meeting of the Global Soil Laboratory Network (GLOSOLAN)
Pillar 5 - Harmonisation Areas
• Soil profiles, soil classification and soil
maps
• Soil sampling and analysis
• Interoperability – the exchange of digital
soil information
• Interpretation and evaluation

GloSIS Federation
➔ GSP is developing spatial data infrastructure for GloSIS in a
decentralised manner.
➔GloSIS is being built with member countries (INSII
International Network of Soil Information Institutions)
➔ GloSIS will be a “system of systems” and bringing
national/institutional soil information systems into a
federated network, in which different nodes are able to
communicate using common standards.
➔Federated architecture will respect existing ownership rights
(GSP Soil Data Policy)
➔ This federated approach will empower countries to develop
their national soil information systems as reference centres
for national soil information.
11. 3rd Meeting of the Global Soil Laboratory Network (GLOSOLAN)
GloSIS Participation levels
The federation-based architecture will allow soil data
holders to choose between three different levels of
participation to GloSIS, due to the differences in
technical level, technical skills and resources of data
holders as well as differences in ambitions that data
holders might have for setting up and maintaining
their own SIS.

GloSIS Data – Soil Profile Data
• Tier 1 data: all soil data that are considered for exchange in
GLOSIS (allowing spectral data -> GLOSOLAN)
• Tier 2 data:
• Subsets of Tier 1 data; based on quality criteria
• Subsets are thematic (e.g. tied to soil threats)
• SOC assessment
• Soil salinity
• Soil fertility
• Water retention
• Soil reference profiles
