2. Course description This course provides students with an in-depth knowledge and skills to provide
advanced nursing care using the nursing process as a framework for young, middle
age, and older adults’ clients/patients with chronic medical and surgical conditions.
The course allows the students to be a competent provider of safe, cost effective,
legal, ethical, and culturally congruent and client centered human response-based
nursing care for adults. It emphasizes the utilization of relevant theories, critical
thinking, knowledge and advanced clinical skills in the provision of advanced
nursing care based on scientific rationale, evidence-based practice guidelines and
standards of care.
Course objectives After the completion of this course, the students will be able to:
Explain chronic medical and surgical conditions among adults
Identify, interpret and use appropriate diagnostic modality results for clients
with chronic conditions
Differentiate managements modalities of chronic medical and surgical
conditions
Develop individualized nursing care plan for clients with chronic medical and
surgical conditions
Execute plan of care for patients with chronic medical and surgical conditions
Discuss how to provide chronic illness self-management education and support
for clients with chronic medical and surgical conditions
Discuss preparation and management of patients undergoing advanced
diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
Monitor responses of chronically ill adult patients to the treatments
Synthesize evidence on the area of chronic medical and surgical conditions
