student, how are you? So today I am going
to discuss with you about epidemiological
approach. But before starting today’s lesion,
let us review your previous knowledge.

2. 1min Introduce the
topic
INTRODUCTION
Epidemiology is the basis of preventive and
social medicine.it is health related
discipline and directly applicable to
community health and community health
nursing, it not only helps to understand the
health and disease concept, their
determinants but also help in planning,
implementing and evaluating health
services.

3. 1min define the
epidemiology.
DEFINATION
Epidemiology is the study of distribution of
disease or physiological condition in human
population and of the factors that influence
this distribution.

5 1min Discuss about
the
epidemiologic
al approach.
The epidemiological approach to
problem of health and disease is based
on two foundations:
Asking questions and making
observations.
Making comparisons.
Asking questions:
Epidemiological studies are done to
know the incidence and prevalence of
disease in various subgroups of
population by time, place and person.
Making comparison:
The basic approach in epidemiology is
to make comparison and inferences. This
may be comparisons of two groups. One
group having the disease and the other
group not having the disease.

epidemiologica
l methods.
Epidemiological Methods:
There are two broad types:
1. Observational studies: Descriptive study
and Analytical study: Case control and
cohort studies are the two types of
analytical observational studies
2. Experimental studies:
Randomized controlled trials (RCT):
uses patients as units of study,
mostly for assessing a new therapy
Field trials: uses healthy individuals
as units of study, mostly for
assessing preventive agents like
vaccines
Community trials: uses communities
as units of study for assessing
community-based interventions like
health status in villages with a
training program versus in those
without
