HW400 Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Course Title: Complementary and Alternative Medicine
Credit Hours: .5

This course explores the unique topic of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Regardless of
a student’s previous education, this course is beneficial. The Complementary and Alternative
Medicine course provides students an opportunity to explore holistic topics and possibly integrate
knowledge learned into his or her personal lives. Skills and information acquired will be assessed
through two short quizzes and a unique project. The outcomes stated below shall be met to
successfully complete the Complementary and Alternative Medicine course.
Course Competencies: By the end of the course you will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of how Complementary and Alternative Medicine became
well-known, such as historical trends and ethical/legal practices. Also, be able to
comprehend the differences between Complementary and Alternative approaches.
Understand the 10 most common types of complementary health approaches among adults,
and be able to describe each in detail.
Engage in a Complementary and Alternative Medicine approach that one has not yet tried.
Demonstrate a true understanding of the Complementary and Alternative method through
critical evaluation.

There is no provided textbook. Website links as well as PowerPoint presentations and handouts
will be emailed to each student.
There will only be three seminars, each lasting an hour and a half. Each seminar is free and open
to the public. It is in your best interest to attend each seminar to obtain the most information
possible. There will be a ten minute break at the midway point of each seminar. This is a chance
for students to briefly chat with one another or address the instructor with any additional questions.
Week 1: Introductory quiz to determine previous knowledge of any Complementary and
Alternative Medicine topics.
Week 2: Students will utilize a Complementary and Alternative Medicine approach he or she has
not yet tried. The student will write a one page journal about his or her experience with their CAM
appraoch. The journal should thoroughly address the student’s thoughts before, during, and after
the practice. Lastly, the student should state why or why not he or she would participate in the
Complementary and Alternative Medicine approach again.
Week 3: A final quiz will be completed to compare pervious knowledge to learned knowledge of
Complementary and Alternative Medicine topics.
Students are highly encouraged to ask questions throughout each seminar. Please treat your peers
the way you would want to be treated. Lastly, students are encouraged obtain additional
information about Complementary and Alternative Medicine topics at
https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/complementaryandintegrativemedicine.html.
Upon completion of the three week Complementary and Alternative Medicine course, a course
evaluation form will be available to fill out. The form will address the categories of the
instructor, information discussed, and usefulness of websites provided. Your honest feedback is
greatly appreciated in an effort to enhance the course for those after!
