 ZipGrade turns your phone or tablet into an
optical grading machine similar to a Scantron.
 The app works for both Apple and Android
devices.
 It reads free-to-download answer sheets in
multiple sizes. Provide instant feedback to
students by grading exit tickets, quizzes, and
formative assessments as soon as they finish.
 Along with quick grading, the app also creates
individual grade sheets for each of your
students, stores all data digitally in a way that
can be quickly accessed online, and gives you
in-depth item analysis.
Retiring
 While Scantron machines have been around a
long time, they’ve become antiquated.
 The biggest problem with using Scantron is
the cost.
 Machines and scan sheets cost thousands of
dollars a year.
ZipGrade in Action
Cost Effective
 ZipGrade is free to download and use 100
times.
 Answer sheets are free to download from
the website.
 Full Version: $1.99 for 2 months or $6.99 for 1
year.
Costs
Cons to using Zip Grade
 Student papers remain unmarked so kids
can’t see which answers they got wrong.
 Can drain the battery of your phone/iPad.
 Teachers (or the school) may have to pay
out-of-pocket cost.
 However, the fee can be a one-time cost.
Pros to using ZipGrade
 Scores are returned instantaneously as the
student waits.
 You can see how your entire class did on a test
from the Item Analysis screen.
 You can import students and classes and then
export them to many online grading sites.
 Backed up to the cloud.
 You have the ability to reuse exams year after
year.
 You can email or download answer sheets.
 Answer sheets can be downloaded from the
internet for free and copies can be made on any
copier.
 Students can mark answers using any writing
tool: pen, pencil, marker, even highlighter.
Quick, Accurate, and Organized
 ZipGrade knows when a paper is in focus and
ready to be graded.
The phone will vibrate when an image is
acquired to let you know it’s ready to scan
another.
Instant Feedback
Many teachers now grade as soon as students
complete a quiz or test.
Students can receive immediate feedback and
teachers can redirect differentiated learning
quickly.
Flexible
With multiple answer sheets sizes and forms,
ZipGrade can be used for everyday exit tickets,
weekly quizzes, or longer exams.
The answer sheets are also licensed via
Creative Commons (BY-NC/3.0) which means
you are allowed to customize, update, and
distribute to others.
Some teachers have even laminated answer
sheets to make them reusable.
Lighting Conditions
 Indoor, indirect light provides the best
contrast for reading the answer sheets.
 Try to avoid direct light from desk lamps and
sun as it washes out marks, especially pencil.
 Shadows can also sometimes cause
problems.
 ZipGrade can easily read blue and black pen
and pencil. Be sure to have students fully color
in the circle with as few stray marks as
possible.
Making Sense of Colored Circles
 When marking up a test, here is what the
colors mean:
* Green = Part of the correct answer and
darkened by the student
* Red = NOT part of the correct answer and
darkened by the student
* Orange = Part of the correct answer and NOT
darkened by the student
* Blue = Not part of the quiz (no key defined)
and darkened by the student.
* Red X on the question number = The student
response is not correct
* Green C on the question number = The
student response is correct
Importing Students
 ZipGrade can grade papers without entering
in student IDs, but to get the most value from
data exports it is recommended that you
create student records and ID values for all of
your students.
 If you have a CSV file of your student roster,
you may use the website www.zipgrade.com
to import all of your students in a matter of
second.
Importing Zip Grade Rosters (Mr. Tighe)
Results
 Scan results are available instantly either via
your device or on the zipgrade.com website.
 Depending on your scoresheet, the results
will vary in appearance.
 Basic info containing name, score and % correct
will be reported.
Importing Scores to PowerSchool
 Yes, there is a way to upload your scores
directly into PowerSchool through ZipGrade’s
export feature and PowerSchool’s import
feature, saving a lot of manual work.
 However, this is obviously a more advanced
feature.
 The export should be in a specific CSV format.
You’ll need to have student names associated to the quiz.
Individual Results
 There is also a way to provide individual
results for each scan.
 This contains the original scanned image as
well as student answers compared to the key.
 You also can export the file as a PDF.

Scan Results
 Now, let’s scan your score sheets and see how
you did.
 Don’t worry if you did poorly—this is only for
practice.
Please leave your sheets facing up on your
desk.
ZipGrade Cloud
 One way to see the results is through
ZipGrade Cloud on a computer.
Other potential uses…
ZIPGRADE
Exit slips/tickets
Self-scan Exit Tickets : Use ZipGrade to let
students scan their own exit tickets as they
finish.
 Of course, a ZipGrade exit slip would need to
be in a multiple choice format.
 An exit slip is one that students complete and
turn in before leaving class.
Surveys or Elections
 A simple survey could be conducted with
ZipGrade—perhaps using A and B for Yes and
No.
 Some people have also used ZipGrade for
voting. Candidates or proposals would need to
correspond to a letter on the scan sheet.
Dry-Erase Sheets
 One way to potentially save paper is to make
dry-erase version of answer sheets.
 This will require some laminating.
Custom Scan Sheets
 As you get more advanced, you may wish to
create custom scan sheets.
 ZipGrade states that users are free to copy,
distribute, and customize answer sheets.
 One website that assist people with this is
http://www.catpin.com/zipgrade/.
Thank you.

Add some zip grade

  • 2.  ZipGrade turns your phone or tablet into an optical grading machine similar to a Scantron.  The app works for both Apple and Android devices.  It reads free-to-download answer sheets in multiple sizes. Provide instant feedback to students by grading exit tickets, quizzes, and formative assessments as soon as they finish.  Along with quick grading, the app also creates individual grade sheets for each of your students, stores all data digitally in a way that can be quickly accessed online, and gives you in-depth item analysis.
  • 3. Retiring  While Scantron machines have been around a long time, they’ve become antiquated.  The biggest problem with using Scantron is the cost.  Machines and scan sheets cost thousands of dollars a year.
  • 5.
  • 6. Cost Effective  ZipGrade is free to download and use 100 times.  Answer sheets are free to download from the website.  Full Version: $1.99 for 2 months or $6.99 for 1 year.
  • 8. Cons to using Zip Grade  Student papers remain unmarked so kids can’t see which answers they got wrong.  Can drain the battery of your phone/iPad.  Teachers (or the school) may have to pay out-of-pocket cost.  However, the fee can be a one-time cost.
  • 9. Pros to using ZipGrade  Scores are returned instantaneously as the student waits.  You can see how your entire class did on a test from the Item Analysis screen.  You can import students and classes and then export them to many online grading sites.  Backed up to the cloud.  You have the ability to reuse exams year after year.  You can email or download answer sheets.  Answer sheets can be downloaded from the internet for free and copies can be made on any copier.  Students can mark answers using any writing tool: pen, pencil, marker, even highlighter.
  • 10. Quick, Accurate, and Organized  ZipGrade knows when a paper is in focus and ready to be graded. The phone will vibrate when an image is acquired to let you know it’s ready to scan another.
  • 11. Instant Feedback Many teachers now grade as soon as students complete a quiz or test. Students can receive immediate feedback and teachers can redirect differentiated learning quickly.
  • 12. Flexible With multiple answer sheets sizes and forms, ZipGrade can be used for everyday exit tickets, weekly quizzes, or longer exams. The answer sheets are also licensed via Creative Commons (BY-NC/3.0) which means you are allowed to customize, update, and distribute to others. Some teachers have even laminated answer sheets to make them reusable.
  • 13. Lighting Conditions  Indoor, indirect light provides the best contrast for reading the answer sheets.  Try to avoid direct light from desk lamps and sun as it washes out marks, especially pencil.  Shadows can also sometimes cause problems.  ZipGrade can easily read blue and black pen and pencil. Be sure to have students fully color in the circle with as few stray marks as possible.
  • 14. Making Sense of Colored Circles  When marking up a test, here is what the colors mean: * Green = Part of the correct answer and darkened by the student * Red = NOT part of the correct answer and darkened by the student * Orange = Part of the correct answer and NOT darkened by the student * Blue = Not part of the quiz (no key defined) and darkened by the student. * Red X on the question number = The student response is not correct * Green C on the question number = The student response is correct
  • 15. Importing Students  ZipGrade can grade papers without entering in student IDs, but to get the most value from data exports it is recommended that you create student records and ID values for all of your students.  If you have a CSV file of your student roster, you may use the website www.zipgrade.com to import all of your students in a matter of second.
  • 16. Importing Zip Grade Rosters (Mr. Tighe)
  • 17. Results  Scan results are available instantly either via your device or on the zipgrade.com website.  Depending on your scoresheet, the results will vary in appearance.  Basic info containing name, score and % correct will be reported.
  • 18. Importing Scores to PowerSchool  Yes, there is a way to upload your scores directly into PowerSchool through ZipGrade’s export feature and PowerSchool’s import feature, saving a lot of manual work.  However, this is obviously a more advanced feature.  The export should be in a specific CSV format. You’ll need to have student names associated to the quiz.
  • 19. Individual Results  There is also a way to provide individual results for each scan.  This contains the original scanned image as well as student answers compared to the key.  You also can export the file as a PDF.

  • 42. ZipGrade Cloud  One way to see the results is through ZipGrade Cloud on a computer.  https://www.zipgrade.com/login/
  • 44. Exit slips/tickets Self-scan Exit Tickets : Use ZipGrade to let students scan their own exit tickets as they finish.  Of course, a ZipGrade exit slip would need to be in a multiple choice format.  An exit slip is one that students complete and turn in before leaving class.
  • 45. Surveys or Elections  A simple survey could be conducted with ZipGrade—perhaps using A and B for Yes and No.  Some people have also used ZipGrade for voting. Candidates or proposals would need to correspond to a letter on the scan sheet.
  • 46. Dry-Erase Sheets  One way to potentially save paper is to make dry-erase version of answer sheets.  This will require some laminating.
  • 47. Custom Scan Sheets  As you get more advanced, you may wish to create custom scan sheets.  ZipGrade states that users are free to copy, distribute, and customize answer sheets.  One website that assist people with this is http://www.catpin.com/zipgrade/.
