The Affordable Desalination Collaboration aims to demonstrate that seawater desalination can be an affordable source of fresh water through testing and measuring new technologies. It operates a demonstration plant at a US Navy facility in Port Hueneme, California to test advanced pre-filtration and reverse osmosis membrane technologies. The demonstration plant has achieved energy usage as low as 1.8 kWh/m3 for the reverse osmosis process alone, showing that desalination can be comparable or lower in energy use than other water sources for Southern California.

AMD treatment, AML reclamation, remining, revegetation, a lessening of acid deposition, and natural attenuation are improving stream quality throughout the coal regions of the Susquehanna River Basin. However, these improving streams, for the most part, are not being delisted from the Integrated List of Impaired Waters even though they are now quality capable. In addition, many stream segments are listed as impaired in error since necessary funding and manpower was not available at the time of assessment to define what stream segment(s) of a particular watershed is actually impaired. Consequently, entire watersheds are listed as impaired, when only certain stream segments of that watershed should be listed. In 2016, the Susquehanna River Basin Commission and Department of Environmental Protection enacted an effort to assess streams that have possibly improved enough for impairment delisting, correct impairment listing errors, and better define what stream segments in a particular watershed are actually impaired. These impairment delistings will help ensure the protection of these streams and, in some cases, could improve protection further through reclassification to high-quality (HQ) and exceptional value (EV).2.1 iwmi aditya rome-gw_study_presentation
The Global Futures and Strategic Foresight (GFSF) team met in Rome from May 25-28, 2015 to review progress towards current work plans, discuss model improvements and technical parameters, and consider possible contributions by the GFSF program to the CRP Phase II planning process. El Paso Water is developing an advanced water purification project to address long-term drought impacts on its surface water supplies and meet peak water demands. A feasibility study established direct potable reuse as the preferred alternative. Pilot testing of microfiltration, reverse osmosis, UV/peroxide advanced oxidation, and granular activated carbon treatment established the basic treatment scheme. Detailed technical evaluations were completed in 2017-2018 to address key questions, and preliminary design is currently underway. The project will provide a reliable water source to meet demands without reliance on impaired surface water supplies from the Rio Grande.
