Transportation arterials, jobs, greenways and urban habitat lead us to imagining a variety of housing forms interacting in relation to a neighbourhood’s unique characteristics. The Connected City: A Home for Everyone, invites you to conceptualize new affordable housing opportunities based on forward, outside-the-box thinking.
In the past, humans have built dwellings in areas identified as human settlements. The term "human settlement" refers to a group of people living together in a particular area. These communities frequently concentrate on vital facets of daily life, including economy, transportation, family life, communication, entertainment, and education. The goal of human settlements is to improve urban and rural poor communities and all people's living and working surroundings better in terms of social, economic, and environmental quality. This improvement ought to be founded on technological cooperation initiatives, collaborations between the public, corporate, and community sectors, and involvement of community organisations and special interest groups including women, indigenous people, the elderly, and the disabled in decision-making. Sustainability refers to achieving our goals without affecting the capacity of coming generations to achieve their goals. Environmentalism is only one aspect of sustainability. Most conceptions of sustainability also include considerations for economic growth and social equality. Accordingly, sustainability in the context of human settlements refers to those communities that can endure while effectively utilising resources, such as natural, financial, or human. This study aims (1) to explore the relationship of human settlement on Sustainable Development Goals’ indicator and (2) to explore the strategies to design sustainanble urban human settlement. All necessary information has been gathered via secondary data from sources like technical report, books and journals. Therefore, the qualitative method of content analysis has been utilised.

A critical analysis of urban regeneration programmes in EuropeIsaiah O. Durosaiye
This paper presents ongoing studies on urban regeneration as part of the OIKONET network, a three-year project supported by the Erasmus Network’s programme of the European Union. A major challenge of the project is to find ways to intertwine research, pedagogy and participation. The first step in this direction has been to create a platform for sharing information on research expertise and interests of OIKONET partners. As a result synergies between research, pedagogy and participation as well as potential affinities among partners were identified; one of these is housing regeneration which is the topic of a collaborative learning space currently being carried out by a group of partners.
The next sections will present urban regeneration strategies in the UK, Hungary, Serbia, Slovakia and Russia that were examined as part of the research and pedagogic activities conducted by OIKONET partners during the last 18 months.

SOCIAL CHANGE AND SPATIAL TRANSFORMATION IN HOUSING ENVIRONMENTS
This paper studies the impact of the rapid urbanization process on the housing environment in Kuwait in terms of it sustainability. It argues that this rapid planned change and urbanization did not permit the city to develop in a sustainable manner.
Community Participation should be indispensible element in human settlements, especially in planning strategies and in formulation, implementation and management. It should influence all levels of Government in the decision making process to further the political, social and economic growth of Human settlements. This relates especially to low income and Cost Effective Housing projects denoting squatter settlement upgrading with site and service schemes.
In squatter settlement upgrading projects, the authorities regularize the illegal land tenure of squatters and provide basic infrastructure in the settlements. These interventions are expected to be sufficient incentives for the residents to start improving their houses. In sites-and-services schemes, the authorities provide serviced plots to the urban poor and expect them to produce their own houses, through individual or mutual self-help or the employment of small contractors. Participation assumes an activity in which the community takes part and the involvement of at least one other party, usually a government agency or a nongovernmental organization (NGO). Community participation is sometimes used to indicate community self reliance or self-help, i.e. an activity which is usually undertaken by a government agency, is undertaken by the community on its own (e.g. spontaneous housing).
The United Nations defined community development as "the processes by which the efforts of the people themselves are united with those of governmental authorities to improve the economic, social and cultural conditions of communities, to integrate these communities into the life of the nation and to enable them to contribute fully to national progress."

Adaptability of housing stock as potentiality for affordable and sustainable
popular settlements
Introduction:
“As our environment changes and individual requirements and aspirations
develop, the need for adaptable architecture is ever more current.”
(Holdham, J. 2008)
Main Hypotheses:
• An appropriate mass housing production systems for poor people can
be adopted through “Adaptable Design Tools”.
• “Adaptable Housing Design” can create various levels of changeable
architecture, and sustainable solutions which capable to accommodate
the demands of the users and local environment.

Problematic of mass-housing projects:
1. Mass housing projects depends on a huge state investment to
implement finished housing units in a short time.
2. They failed to cope with the dynamic change of users' needs.
3. They didn't reflect sustainable development as following:
• Socially- don‟t reflect or maintain local socio-culture values.
• Environmentally - local environmental conditions have been
neglected in their design and planning.
• Economically - deteriorate rapidly and need high maintenance cost.
• Esthetically - look monotonous and exposed generally to informal
transformation or vandalism.
• Affordability - don‟t cover the housing demands for poor people.

Mass housing for low income groups in Egypt:
Mass housing projects have been witnessed great informal transformations.
Poor people act informally to adapt their rigid units with their limited resources
according to their needs. The result of this process was remarkable urban
deterioration in those settlements.

Habraken's notion of the permanent ‘support’ and the temporary ‘infill’ takes
the idea to another level, which represents the origins of the ‘Open Building

Root of adaptability and sustainability in traditional built environment
The important lessons which can always be learned from traditional old cities are
that sustainable development of built environment is adaptation and appropriation
process to fit properly within its local ecological context.

Adaptable housing design (AHD) - systematic approach
Adaptable Housing design tools allow the user to be more engaged with
developing their built environment, creating architecture that has longevity and
richness.
1st phase- Analytical Tools: (to analyze)
• Analyze ecological setting - physical environment, social dynamics and
employment of the poor.
• Define resources allocations & Accessibility - mechanism of resource
management
• Define main active parties' representatives – GBO, CBO, NGOs,
Developers, Dwellers …

Adaptability of housing stock as potentiality for affordable and sustainable
popular settlements
2nd phase-Design Tools:
• Guidelines of design strategy - based on: dynamics of the housing stock
(depends on the conditions of ownership, cultural pattern and social organization)
• Interactive relation among (MDU) - Morphology, Domain and Use
• Design and execute documents - design modules based on analytical
study for traditional urban tissue, living activities and equipment, building
regulations and incremental design strategy
Analytical chart activities& built form/ space and position

3rd phase–Implementation's Spheres:
Defined and formulation responsibilities at different built environment levels (urban
tissue and infrastructure level, support building units and plots demarcation level
and incremental growth level) among actors as active parties:
• Collective level - It is a thematic process which embraces collective decisions
and accumulation of prevailing local cultural traditions and building regulations.
Support elements include basic building structure.

Collective level - grid formulation process for urban tissue and support
Plot demarcation (basic and margin areas) - basic structure units
public realm, including the establishment of urban patterns of built environment:
placement of streets, public spaces, residential areas, services and networks.

The support is dominated by common architectural styles, climate, building
codes, land use rules, investment requirements, local market, and other local
conditions. Thus, within its specific social and technical setting, the support is
built using locally appropriate means of design and construction
Collective level – neighbor cluster unit in preoccupation stage

• Private level - Refer to all decisions to address the private realm, which
includes demarcation process of residential allotments, sharing of the support
by basic habitable units and defining the operation fields for stockholders.
Non-thematic sustained altered processes encompass individual acts, utilizing
traditional expertise.
Universal options of plot demarcation – individual level

Support is intended to accommodate and outlast changes to persist largely independent
of the individual occupants‟ choices while accommodating changing life circumstances.
A support unit building is not a mere skeleton. It is not neutral, but is rather enabling
architecture. From the perspective of the community, the support appears complete. But
to be occupied, it requires appropriation process to fit the users' needs.
Private level – neighbor unit occupation stage & consolidation

CONCLUSION:
Residential Adaptable Building design‟s main purpose is to encourage
individuals' choices and responsibilities within it sustainable built environment.
design strategies labeling points:
• Balancing - distributing responsibility to strike a good balance between
overall community coherence and individual freedom in each project
• Enabling - efficiency and variety of physical and organizational patterns in
building.
• Ordering and Interchangeability - enable unambiguous separation of
responsibilities eliminates disruptive reverberation of one part‟s change
through the whole form.
• Sustainability - increasing building life, building for change and
accommodating natural variety.
