2. Paul is in Caesarea to be
brought before Felix the
Roman governor.
His accusers, the Jewish
religious leaders, have
arrived in Caesarea and
brought a lawyer with them.
2
3. Acts 24 1 And after five days Ananias the high
priest descended with the elders, and with a certain
orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor
against Paul. 2 And when he was called forth,
Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that
by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very
worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy
providence, 3 We accept it always, and in all places,
most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.

4. The lawyer spent almost as much time on his
introduction as he did on the specific charges
against Paul. His description of Felix was
obviously fawning flattery, for Felix was known
for his violent use of repressive force and corrupt
self-aggrandizement. Felix had been a slave, won
his freedom, and curried favor with the imperial
court. Tacitus, a Roman historian, bitingly summed
up Felix’s character with the terse comment, “He
exercised royal power with the mind of a slave.”

5. 4 Notwithstanding, that I be not further tedious unto
thee, I pray thee that thou wouldest hear us of thy
clemency (equity; gentleness) a few words. 5 For
we have found this man a pestilent (pest or plague)
fellow, and a mover of sedition (riots; uprising)
among all the Jews throughout the world, and a
ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes: 6 Who also
hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we
took, and would have judged according to our law.
5
6. They had not arrested Paul; he was seized by a
mob and about to be killed.
Paul was a leader of the Nazarenes (Christianity),
but all else Tertullus said was a lie.
Liars lie.
Tertullus lied for a living.
6
7. 7 But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and
with great violence took him away out of our
hands, 8 Commanding his accusers to come unto
thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take
knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse
him. 9 And the Jews also assented, saying that these
things were so.
The high priest and his flunkies all agreed with
the lies their lawyer told.
To agree with a lie is to be a liar.
7
8. 10 Then Paul, after that the governor
had beckoned unto him to speak,
answered, Forasmuch as I know
that thou hast been of many years a
judge unto this nation, I do the more
cheerfully answer for myself:
No flattery; just the truth that Felix had been
the Roman governor in that area long enough
to judge his case with understanding.
He understood the Jewish religious leaders well
enough to see what they were doing.
8
9. 11 Because that thou mayest understand, that there
are yet but twelve days since I went up to
Jerusalem for to worship.
Only 12 days to do all of which he was accused.
He had not instigated the riot.
Jews had followed him to Jerusalem to do so.
Paul was there to worship, and to bring the
gifts of charity from the churches to the
Christian Jews in Jerusalem. (V 17)
9
10. 12 And they neither found me in the temple
disputing with any man, neither raising up the
people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city:
13 Neither can they prove the things whereof they
now accuse me.
Lies, lies, and more lies.
Paul’s accusers had nothing.
10
11. People get upset when others lie on them.
We should not.
Matthew 5 11-12 Blessed are ye, when men shall
revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all
manner of evil against you falsely, for My sake.
Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your
reward in Heaven: for so persecuted they the
prophets which were before you.
11
12. Most men have never loved the Truth, never loved
God, and will never love Jesus Christ.
So, don’t be surprised when men and women
do not love you, a Christian.
Live in such a manner that all
their evil accusations are false.
Your reward in Heaven will
be great.
