ACTORS
MAIN CHARACTER – PHOEBE GIBSON
I have chosen Phoebe Gibson to be the lead actress in
my music video. As the main character, the narrative
follows her as she goes on a journey of self discovery.
She begins shy and afraid of facing her demons until
she can’t escape from them anymore. Eventually, she’ll
grow to love her demons (the masked people) as an
extended metaphor of her coming to accept herself
for who she is.
As my music video is predominantly narrative, it would
be beneficial to cast someone who can act. As Phoebe
takes A-level Drama I know that she fits that criteria.
I’ve also had the benefit of watching her in many
school productions so I know that she will deliver a
strong and believable performance. As well as this,
her roles in school productions that have included
solo performances assure me that if lip-syncing is
required in my music video she will be able to do it
realistically.
Phoebe normally wears her hair natural and wears
thrifted clothes, which not only reflects the style of my
target audience but aids in the costume selection
process. Being 17 means that Phoebe is also perfect to
represent the age group of my target audience, which
will mean they will be able to relate and connect with
her like they do to Lorde.
RABBIT – BONNER COCKAYNE
I have chosen Bonner Cockayne to play the role of the Rabbit.
Out of all the masked people, he has the most significant role
as he’s the one Phoebe ’falls in love’ with. The audience are not
going to be able to see his face behind the mask so it is
important that he is effective with his body language in
portraying his affection for Phoebe.
I feel as though he would be able to fill this role with ease as I
know he’s a strong actor due to acting alongside him for two
years in GCSE Drama.
Like Phoebe, he is 17 years old so fits perfectly in representing
the target audience. His dress code is very representative of the
’indie fashion’ I researched for my target audience which
therefore makes a costume very accessible.
As well as this, Phoebe and Bonner are good friends meaning it
will make their ‘love story’ more believable for the audience.
TIGER – LOUISE WILLIAMS
I have chosen Louise Williams to play the role of the
Tiger. Being the Tiger, Louise needs to be versatile with
her emotions although her face won’t be shown. Again, I
know Louise would be able to fulfill a convincing role as
she took GCSE Drama and also acted as the main role for
my AS Film Opening.
PIG - KIRSTY SWAN
I have chosen Kirsty Swan to play the Pig. As
Kirsty has performed in many school
productions as well as in my AS Film Opening, I
know she is capable of giving a believable
performance. Kirsty also has a very carefree,
adventurous personality which makes her
perfect for the narrative of my music video
where she will be in very social scenarios.
MONKEY – MYLES HASKELL
I have chosen Myles Haskell to play the
Monkey. Myles has featured in student
films/projects before so I know he will be to
give a convincing performance. He has a very
easygoing personality so he will be perfect at
playing the Monkey, where he will have to do
things like running into the sea.
COSTUMES
ANIMAL MASKS
For my music video, I will be using 4 latex animal masks. The narrative follows as a teenage girl faces
her demons, which come in the form of masked people. Phoebe will start to notice these masked
people as she goes about her daily life. The masks look very realistic and menacing, so will work well
in making the audience feel apprehensive. I ensured that I chose full masks so they’d cover the back
of my actors heads in order to totally depersonalise them and make them appear even more
intimidating.
OUTFITS – STREET/FIELD
In these scenes, the cast will be wearing their own normal
clothes. I want to ensure I’m including outfits that are
representative of the target audience so they can appear
relatable, but as my cast have wardrobes of the same style
anyway - I won’t be needing to purchase any specific items of
clothing for my music video. Although I want to take away the
actors’ real identities with the animal masks, I think it will be
effective to have the rest of their bodies dressed like normal
teenagers. In perspective, the masked people won’t be doing
anything that isn’t ordinary for a teenager to do, it’s just the
masks that intimidate and scare Phoebe. This therefore will make
it more realistic when they’re partying and messing around later
on in the video and makes it easier for the audience to
understand that Phoebe could have grown to love them. Some
specific notes to make about the outfit choices are that I will be
choosing items of clothing that have high necks in order to
conceal the end of the animal masks and the outfits of the
masked people will be quite ill-fitting and baggy to reflect their
wildness.
OUTFITS – BEACH/PARTY
For these scenes, more specific costumes are
required. For the beach scene, Phoebe is jogging
along it when she sees the Monkey and the Tiger
sunbathing/doing a beach activity. For this,
Phoebe will need to be in practical exercise attire
which will be leggings and a hoodie. Although it’s
unlikely for the actors to be in swimming
costumes as I will be filming in winter, I think it
would add a comical element if they were
wearing some over-the-top beach outfit.
For the party scenes, all characters will be in more
formal attire. The main colour palette will be
black and white.
PROPS
PROPS – STREET SCENES
In the street scenes, Phoebe starts by just
walking down the road and seeing the
Monkey and the Pig on the side of the street.
I wanted to draw attention to how normal
this situation is other than the fact they have
masks on. When thinking about what
scenario best represented a typical teenager,
I thought about how they hang about on
street corners in groups whilst they drank
and smoke. As most of my actors are under
the age of 18 and I want this video to be
friendly for people in the younger part of the
age bracket (13-16), I will be using fake
cigarettes and fake alcohol as props. The
addition will add more interest and motive
behind the scenes, where I can play on the
masked peoples’ interactions with the props
to appear more intimidating.
PROPS – PARTY SCENES
My aim for these scenes is to
completely transform my shed into a
psychadellic, dreamy area that
completely overwhelms the senses. To
do this, it requires a lot of props. To
add to the set, I want to hang up white
sheets and use LED disco lights. I also
want to use some smoke bombs so
coloured smoke pours out when the
door is opened for Phoebe. I also think
smoke bombs would look effective in
some of the more conceptual scenes
that happen at the party. I will also
need red cups to indicate a typical
teenage party, more fake alcohol and a
board game.
