1. Analysis Of Avril Lavigne- ‘Rock N Roll’ (Narrative)
A Medium shot sets the scene and also shows Avril’s Style and Make Up,
This helps the audience identify her style.
Avril plays freely guitar phone rings, Whilst in water.. (Branding) This associates Avril
with the brand and will make the fans of Avril want that same phone because she has
it too.
“ OHH My New Sony Phone is Ringing” Again naming the Sony brand advertising the
phone to the audience. Also showing a style of a carless attitude which is associated
with the rock genre and influential but even more important the phone is deliberately
in a large glass of water. This shows off the phone is water proof and fits in with a rock
Life style like Avril’s.
Avril talks on phone and makes eye contact with camera which draws in the audience making
us want to Connect and listen to her conversation… (Phone Works) – more advertising the
phone is still working.
Conversation .. “can I make it any more obvious he was a boy she was a girl”- Connecting and
following on from a Previous Successful song.. Which makes the audience more interested in
the introduction as they recognise lyrics from an old song. Like Andrew Goodwin has said
‘‘There is often an intertextual reference ’’ The lyrics show intertextual reference to An older
Song ‘Skater Boy’. Other side of phone call saying “Wah Wah” this also tells the audience
that this phone call isn’t serious and they’re not taking themselves seriously.
When Avril looks at her phone by a point of view shot we see a picture of more nonsense wah wah and a Picture of
a cartoon Avril Lavigne. Camera Zooms into phone causing the audience to enter the cartoon world.

Zooming into the phone shows evolving from the introduction real life to a cartoon style world with a
title like either a cartoon movie or video game. This will attract audiences of the age that are
interested in these conventions. Id’ say the target audience can be as young as 5 years old to around
18- 20 years who are interested in the rock genre or familiar with the Artist. This is because even
though the convention of video games and non realistic cartoons can fit in with young children I
believe older teenagers/ young adults who have grown up with Aril Lavigne will take a greater liking
to her as they are familiar with her style and music.
In the introduction so far the colours of black red and green are used frequently. Black is mainly what
Avril is wearing to show her rock style, red and green appear on the phone as well as the title on the
screen opposites of green and red clash to show good and bad. With red being rebelliousness and
showing alertness, bold and dominance (which is part of the rock genre convention.) And Green
representing goodness and the opposite to Red.

2. Very much like a movie there is a short story
of text showing what the video will be about.
This shot sets the scene and show an alien
like figure higher up dominating a what looks
to be a good guy. The sword near the camera
stands by its self and links to the text. Sword
represents Rock & Roll and shows how rock
and roll will stand up and fight.
The Rock and Roll in the text is also spelt
‘Rock N Roll’ which again relates to the title of
the song.
Following shots of close ups show both
characters having implied talking to each by
the use of text. Like a cartoon style. With
Green representing goodness the green text
is coming from the innocent man.
The use of blurring and focus is used to
direct/ guide the audience’s attention to the
characters to show us their style and
characteristics so we will become familiar
with them and identify them as good or bad
guys. E.g the Alien style man dominate the
man in front as he is higher up and looks
straight towards him with confidence. What
he wears made up of just black and a cape
along with a mask also shows to the audience
he is a bad character as he links to other
intertextual villains we have seen in cartoons.
A close up of the necklace on the man’s chest shows a guitar pick with some sort of blade disc. This guitar
pic is a convention of rock and shows the man is associated with the Rock & Roll Genre. Therefore he is a
good character. The close up also subconsciously tells the audience that this small piece is a significant part
of the music video/ story. Cartoon animation is added to imply parts of the story that would be harder to
do in realistic shooting. The red cartoon image shows the bad guy Zapping the good guy with some
powerful force he has which also makes the significant guitar pic seen before fly off his chest.
Short in time shots with the music create a montage to
ensure that there is multiple Viewing. These images all
relate to the rock theme/ conventions. The top two images
show a suburban style area with graffiti and what you would
expect for a place for fighting. Both shots show a poster in
different areas and one close up. This suggests to the
audience in a few seconds that the bad guy has been putting
the posters up and one/ some of them have been
vandalised as an act of Rebelliousness. From what we can
see and have seen so far green represents the good guy and
Rock and Roll. The green cross implies that the rock and roll
genre doesn’t not want to obey the bad guys foreshadowing
a further fight.
Finally this last image

Death as well a being
Another rock genre
Convention. The flag
itself shows the
Audience that there is a
stand for ground and
That there will be a fight to follow.

3. Medium shot shows what Avril
is wearing which will make the
audience want to wear what she
wears. her fashion fits in with
todays teenage fashion as well as
the rock genre with a rebellious
pink streak in her hair and cameo
style clothing.
Her direct attention to the
camera is again her connecting
with audience as well as showing
her identity to audience.
This overhead birds eye shot of a
dark café show where Avril is sat
with a friend and sets the scene
again, which is to then be
followed by a framed long shot.
This shot sets the scene in reality
and introduces new characters.
The dog and a friend.
In the medium close up there is
a dog sat with Avril on one side
of the table the dog is dressed
in shirt and tie. This suggests a
funny non-serious theme to the
cartoon styled video.
Opposite shot from Avril’s side
is shown to also introduce a
new character in the story. This
shot is a medium-close up and
shows to the audience the
characteristics and style of the
friend/ character. (Danica
McKellar) – A well known
actress. Similarities shows
they’re friends with heavy
make up which again is a
convention of rock and
outstanding costume designs..
The actress’s fame will also
attract the audience and fans
of Danica.
This shot shows Avril Getting Up and confronting a waitress about her style.
Rebellious attitude shows her iconic rock figure. Again like before animation is
used to imply action. The mix of animated words Example. ‘Slice, Snit Teaaarrs’.
Imply to audience that Avril is ripping up the waitresses neat outfit.

4. This last shot is taken from behind a cracked window screen to show the car crash. This scene in
the car is dramatic as Avril Argues with her friend after the dog has died. -
“I knew you shouldn’t let him drive”
“he told me he hadn’t had much to drink”
“you knew he had a drinking problem”
“oh so this is my fault!”
Avril’s dialogue (in blue) shows the rebellious motif in her attitude again. Her attitude towards her
friend is rude and dramatic unlike a friendship we would expect between normal friends. This
shows Avril is the more dominant character.
When the bad villain throws his food everywhere after
being caught out by Avril, a long shot from slightly behind
the villain is used to emphasis the movement in the shot
as well as show Avril’s shocked and surprised facial
expression.
Behaviour in this scene is very rebellious and non serious
as the next shot shows the reaction of Avril hitting a baby
that the Villain threw at her. This shot is taken slightly
behind the villain again so we can get a full view of what
he sees.
This lobster shot again shows the video is not to be taken too seriously, The lobster has a knife in its claw. The
positioning of all the characters in the background huddled behind Avril show the intensity of the scene.. A
low angle shot behind the lobster is used in a different way not to make the taller characters look dominant
but to make them look the opposite, helpless. This shot makes the smaller character (the lobster) look Very
Daunting and powerful. Also the use of the obvious fake lobster and the characters showing fear create the
humorous effect. To emphasise the dominance of the lobster a blurred effect on the background has been
added. This will guide the audience’s vision to pay more attention to the lobster’s dominance.
Repetitive cartoon animation is
used to imply the action of a chase .
This shot includes the characters in
the car and shows that the dog is
driving. Which would not happen
realistically.
The shot then follows a matched
cut of a realistic increased cutting
rate shot. The shot is so fast that
we don’t get to realistically see a
dog driving.
Again Animation is used to indicate
a crash of the car. The animation is
more dramatic including the
background to emphasise the
effects of the crash.

5. This shot is again repetitive and
embedded in the video . Andrew
Goodwin ‘s theory states ‘the
demands of the record label will
include the need for lots of close
ups of the artist. The artist may
develop motifs which recur
across their work.’ (A visual style.)
Another example of this is the
medium close up of Avril on the
bottom of this page. This allows
us to see Avril with out her
sunglasses on and her fake
tattoos to identify her style more.
The shot shows a repetitiveness
with connecting to the audience
as in the video the shots switch
between the rest of the story and
Avril singing to the camera.
This dramatic shot of Avril and
her friend kissing is in the
featured in a silent part of the
music video. This creates
emphasis to the shocking
unexpected event. This
shocking kiss appeals also to a
male audience as well as
creating a sense of style with
Avrils identity to her fans.
The shot is a medium close up
which allows the audience get
a good view of what is
happening.
This long shot sets the scene with black
and a lot of pink candles as well as
white. These colours are conventions of
the female rock genre and work better
than red as it would look more like a
love related scene. The darkness in the
shot tells the audience that this is a sad
scene along with the flickering if candles
and the body language of Avril with her
hands together related to a praying
motion. These shots are repetitive and
the cutting rate decrease becoming
slower and fitting with the events of
the video as well the song’s rhythm.
This close up Gives the audience an
understanding to what Avril was
holding in her hand previously.
It also subconsciously unfolds more of
the story and brings back the
reference to of the guitar pick that
was significant at the start of the
video.
As another close up of Avrils hand
places the pic into a key devices it
tells us as the audience that it acts as
a key to something.
A long shot establishes what is inside the coffin . As a guitar rises up out
of the coffin a bright light is used for dramatic effect to emphasis e the
‘magical’ guitar. This makes the guitar look extra special as also a key is
needed to unlock the magic.

6. The ending of this video shows Avril Celebrating
with her guitar this is a intertextual reference to
another rock video…
Guns and roses November Rain.
Even the establishing shot and the introduction
where the artist walks forward is copied as well
as the camera work. The camera lets the artist
walk towards them before moving upwards and
tilting down to create an over head shot.
This will celebrates the past of rock as well as the
Rock & Roll succeeding in the fight between bad
villains and bear shark in the video.
This close up again is repeated but this
time, Avril is pointing at the camera and
looks more serious this shot also appears
to be more framed in by the use of Avril’s
arms as well as being a medium close up.
This is direct to the audience and draws
them in further. This shot also matches the
lyrics of ‘you and me ’ with the actions
matching,
This animated shot shows that the
guitar is a very significant figure in
rock and roll as the guitar is placed
in the middle with the use of
dramatic colours for emphasis. This
is also a intertextual reference to
being successful in a video game as
the background sound effects add to
the effects. With the title and lights
gleaming we relate to the type of
shot we would get in a video game.
The animated shot also is used as a
transaction to change the scene again.
The picture of the bear shark shows
that this is not a serious video as they
don’t really exist. Also animals made up
like this relate to cartoons and fantasy
world like themes that would relate to
some of Avril’s target audience as kids.
A shot from behind Avril is shown as we
see her run towards the scary bear
shark so we see what she is looking at.
As Avril gets closer we see the shot of an extreme long shot to set the scene and for us to see the event clearer and also
becomes public proxemics. When Avril gets closer to the bear Shark we see an long distance over the shoulder shot which
also shows the audience how big and scary the bear shark actually is up close.

7. The ending is like a film or cartoon we would
watch the title in repeated to show us what we’ve
just watched and that it is the end. It also includes
the actress/artist’s Name , Avril Lavigne and who it
was directed by.
Credits Moving From bottom of screen to the top
show more of a film like ending giving thanks to
the actors and actresses..
