3. Preparation is key
Practise out loud by moving your mouth around
the words and get to grips with the accent.
Start your preparation early to break down
the topics into more manageable chunks.
Test yourself by practicing in front of a mirror
or recording yourself to assess your own
pronunciation.

4. Come up with content
Think about the questions and
answers in English to generate
ideas around a topic.
You need to be able to expand
on your answers - justifying
your opinions is important!
You don’t need to believe what
you're arguing. Focus on backing
up opinions and good content.

5. Don’t forget to listen!
Remember, a conversation is a
two-way process.
Listen to the radio, podcasts or
watch TV in the foreign
language.
Find music that you enjoy, try to
write down the lyrics then look
them up.
Listening activities will broaden
your vocabulary and improve
pronunciation.

6. Practise pauses
Practise a few filler expressions
so they come naturally when
speaking.
Pauses give you breathing space
to understand what the examiner
just said.
A key phrase to absolutely learn off by
heart is to ask the examiner to repeat the
question.

7. Ask questions!
Some exams have a section where
you must ask a question.
Prepare some possible questions
before the exam.
Don’t forget to ask the question!

8. Find a partner
Find a willing participant to test you and
get them to ask you random questions.
Try to recreate the exam setting as much
as possible, to calm you down for the
actual exam
Notice the areas that you struggle with
more and go over that content again.

9. Keep calm
Trick yourself into feeling
confident by sitting up straight
during the exam
If you’ve done all you can to
prepare, give yourself some
rest!
Try to get a good night's sleep
and definitely eat before your
exam.

10. Mistakes can happen

Don’t dwell on mistakes!
If you can, correct yourself.
If not: carry on and focus on what you
are saying next.
We all make mistakes, even in our native
language. Don't pressure yourself for
making one in a foreign language.
