Acid rain refers to acidic precipitation with a pH below 5.6, which can damage ecosystems, forests, and infrastructure. It is caused by both natural sources like volcanoes and human emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from burning fossil fuels. Coal power plants are a major source of these emissions. Acid rain harms aquatic life, soils, forests, and historical monuments. Areas most affected currently include eastern North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. Regulations have reduced acid rain by requiring coal plants to use flue gas desulfurization and reducing vehicle emissions.
