Identification of an individual is essential both for legal and humanitarian purpose. Gender identification is an essential criteria required to establish identity of an individual. Use of molecular technique in forensic odontology is an emerging field and widens the avenue even in challenging cases of identification. Gender determination using molecular techniques in forensic odontology shows prodigious outcome and hence befitted as frontier in forensic odontology. Identification of an individual in mass disaster and crime investigation cases in current scenario is an ardent but highly desirable task. Thorough knowledge of forensic genetics is essential and is the need of the hour. Recent advancements in molecular technique for DNA typing useful in gender determination are both
economical and time savers. These advancements will bring justice to people and large benefit to the society. An exhaustive internet based literature search was carried out in pubmed and google scholar database using terms ‘gender identification’ OR ‘Individual identification’ AND ‘DNA fingerprinting’. The search yielded 1848 articles. Inclusion criteria included relevance to the context decided by reading the abstract and availability of full text. A total of 169 articles were selected. Further on reading the full texts, only article pertaining to oral cavity along with relevant articles from the references of the selected articles were considered. A total of 90 articles were considered in the final review. The current paper aims to comprehensively review the gender determination molecular techniques
useful in forensic odontology. It emphasizes on various sources, techniques, profiling systems and genes employed for gender identification from oral cavity

Research Aims:
1.Systematically map the auditory, cognitive, and linguistic abilities of children with listening concerns (as reported by parent/teacher).
2.Investigate how the ability to attend to and process incoming auditory information affects word reading and reading comprehension in school-aged children.
The study sought to find out the feasibility and necessity of the hearing impaired child to speak. The researchers after visiting one of the special schools in South Africa were amused to see the deaf children speaking. It is against this background that the researchers were prompted to carry out the study. A sample of twelve teachers from one special school in Zimbabwe was selected as a research study. The school head and fifteen students were also selected. A survey study was used. The research instruments used were document analysis, the questionnaires and the interview. Questionnaires were administered to twelve teachers and fifteen pupils. Face to face interview was carried out with one of the school heads. The study revealed that most teachers were not proficient in the use of the sign language so they welcomed the proposal of enhancing the deaf child to speak. Mixed sentiments were given by the deaf children. The idea of enabling the deaf child to speak was welcomed by most of the students. Some students furiously responded that they are not eager and will never bother themselves by trying to speak. The study recommended that both oral and sign language ought to be used so that the deaf child will not face communication challenges with their peers and the people at large. Teachers need to show a positive attitude and some dedication when dealing with the hearing impaired students. There is also need to have some workshops so that the teachers will learn the sign language since there is a recommendation to promote the learning of both oral and sign language. Parents for the deaf children should work hand in glove with the school to enhance their children to benefit from both ends, that is, the school and at home.

ABSTRACT: Fluorides are cumulative toxins, even after boiling, food processing, filtration or digestion will not remove fluoride. The aim of the present study is to assess epidemiological profile of endemic fluorosis and the magnitude of the problem in terms of prevalence of various types of fluorosis. 102 households covering the 500 population residing in the endemic fluorotic area have been selected by systematic random technique at Anantapuram district. Each of the subject was studied, information regarding various epidemiological characteristics and examined to notice clinical features related to fluorosis. Out of 500 selected individuals, 453 (90.6%) members have fluorosis related clinical features. On assessing dietary habits it was significant (p≤0.04) among vegetarians (24%) and non vegetarians (76%). Prevalence of fluorosis was higher among those who consumed >5 liters of water (69.6%) than those who consumed <5 /><1.0mg/L) and consume a diet rich in calcium, iron, vitamin C &E and other antioxidants.

Title: Sense of Smell
Presenter: Dr. Faiza, Assistant Professor of Physiology
Qualifications:
MBBS (Best Graduate, AIMC Lahore)
FCPS Physiology
ICMT, CHPE, DHPE (STMU)
MPH (GC University, Faisalabad)
MBA (Virtual University of Pakistan)
Learning Objectives:
Describe the primary categories of smells and the concept of odor blindness.
Explain the structure and location of the olfactory membrane and mucosa, including the types and roles of cells involved in olfaction.
Describe the pathway and mechanisms of olfactory signal transmission from the olfactory receptors to the brain.
Illustrate the biochemical cascade triggered by odorant binding to olfactory receptors, including the role of G-proteins and second messengers in generating an action potential.
Identify different types of olfactory disorders such as anosmia, hyposmia, hyperosmia, and dysosmia, including their potential causes.
Key Topics:
Olfactory Genes:
3% of the human genome accounts for olfactory genes.
400 genes for odorant receptors.
Olfactory Membrane:
Located in the superior part of the nasal cavity.
Medially: Folds downward along the superior septum.
Laterally: Folds over the superior turbinate and upper surface of the middle turbinate.
Total surface area: 5-10 square centimeters.
Olfactory Mucosa:
Olfactory Cells: Bipolar nerve cells derived from the CNS (100 million), with 4-25 olfactory cilia per cell.
Sustentacular Cells: Produce mucus and maintain ionic and molecular environment.
Basal Cells: Replace worn-out olfactory cells with an average lifespan of 1-2 months.
Bowman’s Gland: Secretes mucus.
Stimulation of Olfactory Cells:
Odorant dissolves in mucus and attaches to receptors on olfactory cilia.
Involves a cascade effect through G-proteins and second messengers, leading to depolarization and action potential generation in the olfactory nerve.
Quality of a Good Odorant:
Small (3-20 Carbon atoms), volatile, water-soluble, and lipid-soluble.
Facilitated by odorant-binding proteins in mucus.
Membrane Potential and Action Potential:
Resting membrane potential: -55mV.
Action potential frequency in the olfactory nerve increases with odorant strength.
Adaptation Towards the Sense of Smell:
Rapid adaptation within the first second, with further slow adaptation.
Psychological adaptation greater than receptor adaptation, involving feedback inhibition from the central nervous system.
Primary Sensations of Smell:
Camphoraceous, Musky, Floral, Pepperminty, Ethereal, Pungent, Putrid.
Odor Detection Threshold:
Examples: Hydrogen sulfide (0.0005 ppm), Methyl-mercaptan (0.002 ppm).
Some toxic substances are odorless at lethal concentrations.
Characteristics of Smell:
Odor blindness for single substances due to lack of appropriate receptor protein.
Behavioral and emotional influences of smell.
Transmission of Olfactory Signals:
From olfactory cells to glomeruli in the olfactory bulb, involving lateral inhibition.
Primitive, less old, and new olfactory systems with different path

2. What are morphological traits ?
• Morphology traits are a special structural feature in an
organisms that is genetically inherited from parents to
offspring.(1)
• Morphogenetic traits help to distinguish among organism of
the same species and are a source of variation.(2)
• Morphogenetic traits are observable characters inherited by
individuals from their parents in autosomal dominant or
recessive manner and expressed differently among
populations.(2)
• . Thus, Morphological traits it is useful in evaluating and
analyzing the evolutionary forces and classification.(3)
3. Morphogenetic traits in human.
• Most morphogenetic traits are usually
inherited in Mendelian fashion as a result of
single gene as either autosomal dominant or
autosomal recessive whereas some traits such
as skin colour, hair colour, ear lobes, shape of
hair, Bent little finger, Rolling of tongue, eyes
colour and dimple on cheek and thin are
polygenic, being affected by more than one
gene.(4)
4. Objective
• To evaluate the distribution and inheritance patterns of some
morphogenetic traits; and to determine the association
between the selected morphogenetic traits among the
students.
6. 1.MATERIALS AND METHOD.
• 1.1 POPULATION OF STUDY
• The study was carried out in a heterogenous
population of students admitted during the
2018/2022 academic session for various
programmes in the Computer programming,
Engineering, Faculties of Science, Clinical
Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences and Social
Sciences. A total of 500 students between the
ages of 16 and 26 were randomly selected for the
study.
7. • 1.2 Participants recruitment
• The study employed cross-sectional sampling
method.
• Respondents sampled were not related by
blood and gave informed consent to
participate in the study. Those who did not
consent to the study were not included.
8. • 1.3 Data collection and analysis
• All participants were observed for presence or
absence of dimples on cheek and chin, ability to
roll the tongue or not, presence of free or
attached earlobe, bent or straight little finger,
different color of eyes, different types of hair
colour different shapes of hairs. Observed
differences in individuals were assigned
dominant and recessive respectively according
to the work.
