LATTC was placed on probation by its accrediting body due to incomplete data and documentation provided in its re-accreditation report. To be removed from probation, the college must address three recommendations around institutional integrity, integrated planning, and participatory governance. Everyone at the college needs to play a role by gathering data, developing reports, and participating in governance to remove the probation status by the next accreditation visit in March 2010. The key is addressing the three recommendations through strengthening program review, outcomes assessment, and shared governance processes.

2. What exactly is accreditation? Accreditation is granted to an educational institution that has been found to meet or exceed stated criteria of educational quality. Institutions voluntarily seek Accreditation, and it is conferred by non-governmental bodies. Accreditation has two fundamental purposes: * To assure the quality of the institution, and * To encourage institutional improvement. ---ACCJC website

3. How often are we accredited? The nine LACCD colleges participate in a comprehensive Accreditation "self-study" every six years. During this two-year process, teams of college faculty, administrators, support staff, and students work together to assess the effectiveness of current institutional efforts and to make plans to improve college performance. They are guided in this process by standards of good practice established by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC), an arm of the Western Associate of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

4. What are the sanction levels? Re-affirm Accreditation No sanction. Warning Standards not completely addressed. Probation Standards not completely addressed and data incomplete. Show Cause Inadequate report with serious flaws on standards. Loss of Accreditation School is closed or taken over by another institution. Loss of accreditation occurs infrequently. Commission practices, which include workshops and trainings for member institutions, periodic institutional self-study and reports, peer evaluation, and Commission action, are designed to foster institutional excellence and continuous improvement at each institution. The processes of peer evaluation and follow-up offer support and guidance to institutions that need to improve practice in order to meet accreditation standards or policy requirements. 5. Trade Tech was placed on probation…what does that mean? We didn’t provide the accreditation team with all of the pertinent data and information supporting our efforts at meeting all of the standards. We must now provide a more comprehensive follow-up report in preparation for a second accreditation visit in March 2010. The new report needs to be completed by the end of the year. That means we have plenty of work to do in gathering more data, documenting shared governance and preparing a budget and planning cycle.

6. The accrediting team wants us to respond to three recommendations… One is Institutional Integrity . The commission team recommends that campus constituency groups create venues, forums and dialogues to strengthen and sustain high quality programs. The second recommendation involves Evaluation, Planning and Improvement . The commission team recommends the college develop and fully implement an integrated planning process that links program review, technology, facilities, fiscal planning and resource allocation. The third is participatory governance. In order to meet that standard, the college needs to review all of its shared governance process(es) to insure that all stakeholders actively participate in college planning and decision-making.
