The summer arts camp provided a structured space for children to develop their creativity, knowledge, and critical thinking skills through the creation of visual and theatre arts. The multi-arts based curriculum was rooted in a respect for community, collaboration, and cooperation.

On Saturday, March22 the Ar1 and Culture Center presents Red
Herring Puppets: Electricity. This show, also part of the Family
Perfonnance Series, uses Bunraku-style puppets, a Japanese style
highly crafted and sophisticated puppet that appears lifelike. In this
educational and entertaining show puppets portray historical figures
and scientists as the audience sees how things like a lightning rod,
battery and electric light bulb were discovered. The show also
explains altemative energy solutions such as wind, solar power, and
conservation.

Ifyou are an aspiring artist or performer, the Art and Culhre Center
offers teen, adult and children arts classes, art camps, after-school
and outreach programs. Partnering with the Broward Education
Communications Network, the ACCH offers distance leaming arts
classes to Broward County Public Schools.
On a recent visit to the Center, Public Relations Manager Char-
main Yobbi gave me a guided tour. After sholling the spacious
downstairs gallery she led me upstairs to a room crammed with art
materials, books, art supplies and a video screen. The Integrated
Arts Distance Leaming program offers free live interactive video-
conference broadcasts to schools that may not have the budget for
their own art teacher. "There's a lot that goes on in this little room,"
she explained. Ln2012 alone, the ACCH delivered free instruction
to over a thousand students and 76 teachers in the Broward Public
School system. The Center also provides music, drama, theater and
visual arts programming for schools and other non-profits. Lessons
include art, music, language arts and foreign languages.
Just east of the ACCH is the Children's Arts School. You can't miss
it. It has a giant mosaic tiled alligator guarding the entrance. Youth
programs cnrrently offered include A RTa s t i c C o I I a h o r a t i o ns, which
has a split class format. The first half consists of drawing, paint-
ing and mixed-media art, while the second half of class includes
instruction in drama, improv, story'telling and music. ln Radical
Rhythms, children play games with percussion instruments includ-
ing a weekly final session that invites families to participate with
students in a "drum jam." The SummerArts Camp Program 2014
promises "to bring out the performer or artist in your child". The
session culminates with either an exhibition of participant's work in
the Student Gallery or a theatrical performance at the Central Per-
forming Arts Center. Either way kids have a great time, stay busy
and allow parents a lifile piece of mind.
For the aspiring adult artist, programs s;irch as Creativity Un-
corked!, a six session class where adults are encouraged to "bring
your favorite bottle ofwine" and paint the night away using either
acrylic or watercolors. Beginner through advanced artists welcome!
For day.time artists, Afternoon Delight! is a daytime studio painting
class where students leam color theory and composition to enhance
creativity in both watercolors and acrylics. Skyrockets at nightl

I met with curator Jane Hart, who has worked at the Center for
almost seven years. "My responsibilities include organizing exhibi-
tions in our main gallery spaces. This year that will consist ofa total
of twenty-two shows. I also started and organize the Knight Foun-
dation Arts Challenge award-winning program and the Hot Topics
lecfure series. This year we are presenting four speakers who are
major figures in the Contemporary Arts." Two speakers appearing
in the near future are AndreaZitrel an American sculptor, and Dan
Fauci, executive producer and former head ofcomedy development
at Paramount Studios. Fauci will talk about his web based comedy
seies Whole Day Down. The Hot Topics series features both an art-
ist reception and lecture and begins Saturday February 8th.
Jane also put together one ofthe Center's biggest fundraisers, Abra-
cadabra. which she noted is "an exhibition and art raffie which this
year consists of over 120 handpicked artists and raises sigliflcant
funds for the Center."
While ACCH is proud to be able to present "the finest contempo-
rary art exhibitions of South Florida artists as well as artists from
other regions" according to Jane, especially exciting is the Center's
next main gallery show, which will be "a solo show of work by
critically acclaimed artist Agustina Woodgate, whose work was fea-
tured in a successful one person showing at Afl Basel Miami Beach
in2012." Abracadabra is featured now through March 14th. It is
an exhibition of more than one hundred works with a live drawing
where every ticket holder leaves with an original artwork. Tickets
for the drawing are $375, $35 admission fee.

Unknown to many, the fagade of the Art And Culture Center serves
as Substation Three of the Florida Highway Patrol in the popular
A&E television show The Glades. The show takes place in the
small, sleepy fictional town of Palm Glade, Florida. Certainly
the traditional Spanish clay tiles, Juliette balcony, golden stucco
exterior and swaying queen palms convinced the show's location
scout that the ACCH had the typical south Florida look needed for
the make-believe police precinct. I asked Joy Satterlee, Executive
Director ofthe Center for the past nine years, ifproduction ofthe
show interfered with the Center's activities. "Absolutely not" Joy
