As for the Classic Gateway's interior decoration,
Friedman explains he "hand-picked everything on the
walls". Friedman wants the theatre to be a "Monument to
nostalgia. We want that wonderful ambience that stands
the test of time," he said. Friedman is a lover of
American history and his theater's lobby is a combina-
tion movie, magazine, music and media museum.
I asked movie-goer Karen Roell what she thought of the
theater. "I love all the memorabilia." she said. "It
reminds me of my grandparents era, a simpler time, and
memories of my grandfather taking my grandmother out
to the movies. The Classic Gateway really lives up its
name."
Friedman said he "especially likes to see senior citizens
come in and enjoy movie and all the classic memorabil-
ia." There is a board where customers can fill out com-
ment cards for any movie currently playing at the
Gateway and post for other movie goers. Commenters
can also offer suggestions for the annual Classic Film
Festival, which last year featured movies such as 2001:
A Space Odyssey, Midnight Cowboy, West Side Story
and two classics by Friedman's favorite director Billy
Wilder: Some Like It Hot, with Jack Lemon and Tony
Curtis and Sunset Boulevard with William Holden and
Gloria Swanson.
If Friedman had it his way the
American Film Institutes' Top 100
Movie List would be closer to one
hundred twenty-five films. He enjoys
movies where "something different is
happening". He is "big on things that
move you. When a movie can do that
it's nostalgia".
No matter what happens on the big
screen, Friedman concedes, "The only
genius is the audience at the box
office". The audience ultimately deter-
mines what becomes a classic.
"Whether it's music, movies, sports or
politics, when you see it, you know
it."
Time marches on , even for a classic
theater like the Gateway. Well worn
lobby carpet has been replaced and the
films now arrive at the Gateway on
hard drives instead ofin film cans.
Dania Beach resident Ray Joblonski said he and his wife
frequent the Gateway at least three times a month. "It's a
great little theater, they show the blockbusters but you
get great little movies that they won't play at the multi-
plexes. The staff is great, friendly and not at all like
#ffiffi
those zombie teenage robots you get behind the conces-
sion stand at the big box movies at the mall."
The Gateway has a lot going for it. The seats are comfy
with wide aisles, and there's not a bad seat in the house.
The theater has an awesome sound system, reasonable
ticket and concession pricing and a great memorabilia
museum that fills every wall of the lobby. No unending
previews, and the movies go off on time. So come early
and enjoy the memorabilia and small town charm that
truly proves Gateway lives up to its name: Classic.

This year's festival, kicks off the last week in August
and will run through September. The schedule has not
been finalized yet but expect Friedman to include several
of his own "classic" movie picks. Rest assured when
Arthur says "I don't need anyone to tell me what's great.
When you see a classic you know it".
