Taktus percussion duo presents a colourful program
of music arranged for two marimbas, including
the mesmerizing music of Ann Southam from their
acclaimed debut album, Glass Houses for Marimba.
Sandcatchers

Inspired both by maqam and the Appalachian trail,
the Sandcatchers blend Middle Eastern sounds with
the dreamy, Americana-infused textures of the lap
steel.
Skydiggers: Here Without You
The Songs of Gene Clark

This established Juno-winning alt-country group
plays songs from their latest album that celebrates
one of the world's most treasured songwriters.

For centuries, musicians in southern Italy were
thought to be healers, able to compel patients to
dance away the toxins of the legendary tarantula.
Through tarantelle and pizzicle, Toronto’s Vesuvius
Ensemble shares some of this lively Old World music
therapy.

with Klezmer Music

Ashkenaz Festival takes over the final instalment of
Harbourfront Centre's weekly summer dance series
with an evening of klezmer music and Yiddish dance.
An all-star band, featuring members of Germany's
Semer Ensemble, and other Ashkenaz Festival artists
will provide the grooves while Yiddish dance masters
Zev Feldman and Avia Moore call the steps. Horas,
bulgars, freylekhs, shers and more!
Dance Migration presents GAIA
September 16-18
Diving deep beneath the surface, Dance Migration
pushes the boundaries of Brazilian samba and
presents the story of the female experience
through the bodies of five powerful dancers. This
is a journey of self-discovery and self-love, a story
about breaking from the person we are told we are
supposed to be and finding the courage to accept
who we are.

The Power Plant
Summer 2016 Exhibitions
Until September 5
This summer at The Power Plant, step into interactive
worlds created by contemporary visual artists
working with living sculpture, film, stage-set and
performance.
Franz Erhard Walther: Call to Action
Franz Erhard Walther’s first major solo exhibition in
Canada brings together a body of work, including
sculptures, drawings and videos, made between the
1950s and the present. At the core of the exhibition
is an interest in Walther’s radical consideration of the
relationship between the object, the space and the
human body.
Ulla von Brandenburg: It Has a Golden
Red Sun and an Elderly Green Moon
Ulla von Brandenburg explores states of
unconsciousness and the boundaries between past
and present, reality and illusion, the sacred and the
secular. It features a new film shot in the Théâtre des
Armandiers, France, and a site-specific installation.
RBC Canadian Painting Competition
In collaboration with the Canadian Art Foundation
September 14 - 25
The Power Plant hosts the 18th annual RBC Canadian
Painting Competition, which honours and supports
artists in the early stages of their career. Developed
through RBC’s Emerging Artists Project, the
competition helps Canadian artistic youth confidently
navigate their path to success with mentorship and
professional development opportunities.

Melissa Addison-Webster
September 4
Combining her passion for spiritual and social
change, Addison-Webster's practice endeavors
to create more harmony, respect and balance
across society. Addison-Webster discusses Ulla von
Brandenburg's exhibition It Has a Golden Red Sun
and an Elderly Green Moon.

All Over Town: Visual Arts Summer

Until September 18
By digging deep into the fabric of our city to discover
the secrets and differences that make it truly unique,
even to long-time residents, this group of exhibitions
brings attention to Toronto’s hidden gems from the
far reaches of its arts community and showcases
up-and-coming artists. Over 30 Toronto-based artists
present work ranging from craft and design to mixed
media installation and photography.
Stories We Tell:
Visual Arts Fall Exhibitions
September 24 - December 22
Four exhibitions by 15 artists interpret the idea of
narrative within the visual arts. Explore the graphic
novel in Five Ways, curated by Canadian cartoonist,
Palookaville creator and New Yorker illustrator, Seth.
Featuring Nina Bunjevac, Michael Deforge, Nick
Drnaso, Jon McNaught and Chris Oliveros, Five Ways
moves through visually constructed narratives in
styles ranging from the realistic to the absurd. Other
exhibitions include Christopher Boyne's large-scale
photo installation stepside, the ceramic art of Lindsay
Montgomery in Aberrant Tales, a look at humour
in graphic art entitled Funnies, and observations of
lived experience in Object Diaries. Opening party on
September 23.
Craft & Design
Ceramic Hand-Building Techniques
September 7
In this 6-week course, students learn and use hand-
building techniques to make small functional and
sculptural objects.
Intermediate Jewellery
September 8
In this 8-week course, students learn techniques such
as simple stone setting, etching, chain making, simple
clasps and more. Class content varies with instructor
and skill level of participants. Previous metal smithing
experience required.
Glass Blowing
September 30
This weekend workshop covers solid (paperweights)
and blown forms (cups, bowls and plates), colour
application, hot and cold techniques and use of
studio equipment.
