The June agenda of the Academic Council covers several topics: 1) Concerns about Xavier University's grading system and students attaining academic goals based on a February survey. 2) Recommendations for improving transparency and defined grading policies, such as reminding teachers about consultation hours. 3) Suggestions for better integrating Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm values into daily classroom teachings, such as including reflection essays in exams.

2. Background Concerns were derived from the Office of Research and Constituent Insight’s first general survey on academic concerns on February 2010 and the Student Academic Council. Some highlight data: 65% finds XU’s grading system reasonable. 79% say they are attaining their academic goals in Xavier U. You can view the entire report at http://csg.xu.edu.ph

3. Transparency/ Well defined grading System Some teachers are reported to have negative reactions if consulted about the students’ grades Do not religiously follow consultation hours set in the course outline Do not return quizzes

4. Recommended courses of action: Short Term Department Chairs ought to remind their teachers on the importance of consultation hours

5. Enhance the already existing mechanisms for complaint and a culture of reasonable feed back

6. Encourage teachers to build communication channels to students (via text, e-groups, email etc) Long Term Highlight teachers who are models of transparency

7. Penalties for teachers who do not set consultation hours in their course syllabusSuggestion of Integrating IPP in Textbooks/Instructional Materials Report shows that the articulation of Jesuit education is somehow lost after freshmen year (particularly the FFP)The CSG finds it a need to integrate (even informally) the basic Ignatian tradition in a daily class room settingTeachers should be also be “co-formators” thus it is important that they operate in the context of the IPP

8. Recommended Courses of Action Short term: Regular inclusion of a reflection essay in major exams in the context of the subject and its social implication

9. Float the idea in the faculty convocation that teachers should highlight certain Ignatian values while teaching (repetitio) Long term: Develop the Service Learning Program of the different courses to deepen learning
