SOCW 6051 Week 11 Discussion 1:
My Initial discussion post is as follows:
The website https://www.udayton.edu/artssciences/ctr/hrc/abolition_ohio/index.php talks about partnership with members of community and organization towards anti-human trafficking in Ohio by preventing human trafficking, protecting victims and survivors, and prosecuting the criminals through creating awareness, research and education across the country (University of Dayton, n.d.). It accomplishes this through a program known as School Trafficking Outreach Program- STOP. STOP aims at creating awareness and education on human trafficking prevention. It educates youths, members of the community and school personnel through engaging and comprehensive anti-human trafficking program. It distributes STOP materials across high schools in the Miami Valley. The victim service matrix helps law enforcement and service providers working with victims in this region (University of Dayton, n.d.). The listed organizations and agencies help legally and in life skill training. It also has a wide variety of resources on anti-human trafficking ranging from audio to governmental agencies.
From the information I have found, I would support Veronica and other victims of human trafficking by listening to them as this will help them understand that I am willing to help. The victims may not open up immediately therefore, I would not be judgmental or pressure them. Most importantly, I would avoid blaming the victim.
I would increase my awareness of human trafficking by learning indicators of human trafficking through training which is available to educators (Plummer, et al., 2014). Also, I would teach others about human trafficking through an event that aims at raising awareness, for example, watching a documentary on sex trafficking and discussing the film. To become an ally with the victims, I would volunteer in anti-human trafficking groups in society. I would also learn about the culture of these victims as well as become aware of the oppression they faced.
To support this group of victims, I would take the following steps. First, I would learn about the red flags ad be vigilant of signs of human trafficking (Adams, et al., 2018). I would then initiate a private conversation and let go of any expectations I have. I would also believe the person and build on their strengths. Taking their fears seriously and validating their feelings is another step. Importantly, let the victim open up when they feel comfortable to do so.

GENDER AND CRIME 5
Gender and Crime
Author’s Notes
The gender gap in crime is global, where women are less likely to commit crimes than men. The number of arrests for women is lower than men for all crimes except prostitution. Prostitution is prevalent among women, although there have been discussions and questions about who is the victim in the crime of prostitution. These factors are true in all countries, racial and ethnic groups, and every historical period. For instance, women in the United States comprise 20% of all the criminal arrests for all crime calibers, and only 8% of the inmates in Australia are women. Research studies conducted to explain why the male gender is more susceptible to criminal activities show that the thrill-seeking desire, among other reasons, often pushes them to engage in criminal activities.
More men have been associated with serious crime calibers than women. Women are associated with petty crimes like shoplifting or larceny-theft, fraud, forgery, and embezzlement (Steffensmeier, Schwartz, & Roche, 2013). Female arrests for homicide and aggravated assaults have been less than 15% and less than 10% for serious property crimes of burglary and robbery in the United States since the 1960s. Most crimes associated with women are related to the common domestic roles of women. Women engage in crimes that will directly benefit their families. Unfortunately, more females fall victim to these crimes than men.
It is interesting to note that women have been involved in more complex crimes than men in addition to minor property crimes in recent times. The percentage of female arrests is increasing, indicating that those women are increasingly getting involved in crime. In addition to the already mentioned crimes, women are also getting involved in substance abuse crimes. Although the percentage of women being involved in crime is still low, there has been a fairly consistent increase in the diverse kinds of crimes they commit. On the flip side, female arrests have been reduced for crimes largely associated with like prostitution and homicides, aggravated assault, and drug-law violation.
Research studies and surveys conducted by the National Crime Victimisation Surveys indicate that a lower percentage of female offenders were witnessed committing a crime than men. This percentage is similar to the percentage of female arrests for given kinds of crimes. UCR patterns also indicate that women are less involved in serious crimes but more involved in less serious offenses. The reason for fewer women engaging in crime could be because of the motherly instincts where they think of the afterlife of their families in case they are killed while committing a crime or they die in jail. The less serious crimes they engage in are to meet the family's immediate needs, like f ...
2. Awakenings often lead to journeys. My awakening and
subsequent journey came in 2003. I will never forget that
poster at a rustic clinic on the outskirts of Poipet, Cambodia.
Though I couldn’t read Khmer, the drawings communicated the
message—Parents were advised not to sell their children. It was
unimaginable that a campaign was needed to persuade parents
to protect their own daughters from those who were engaged in
sexually exploiting children. Hearing stories of how sex trafficking
was rampant in Southeast Asia, I returned home shaken.
The next phase of my awakening came two years later. This
time, however, I was not halfway around the world; I was in
Snellville, Georgia. On that Sunday morning, I refused to believe
the words of Pastor Buddy Hoffman who claimed sex trafficking
was happening….in Atlanta. “No way! “ I thought, “This is America!
These things don’t happen here.” These things do happen here.
2005 was the same year a study, titled Hidden in Plain View,
was presented to Mayor Shirley Franklin. The report focused
on the commercial sexual exploitation of girls as young as 10.
That report, now a decade old, revealed that nearly 300 girls
were sexually exploited in Georgia every month. The following
year Atlanta entered the fight as Mayor Franklin launched the
Dear John Campaign to bring attention to the problem of child
prostitution in Atlanta.
Those of us who have been awakened to trafficking come
to a disturbing understanding of how adult entertainment,
pornography, poverty and domestic abuse - provide natural
springboards for the sexual exploitation of children. As the
journey progresses we cry for new legislation, harsher penalties
for the traffickers and buyers and the need for educated jury
pools. However, the journey also leads us to some encouraging
discoveries. We discover great organizations who are on the front
lines of this battle. Furthermore, for us in HR, there is also the
discovery that we can use our roles, our skills and our influence
to make a significant difference in the battle to eradicate the
sexual exploitation of children in our city.
If not before walking through the doors of the Oceans Ballroom,
each one of us this morning at Atlanta’s Corporate Awakening
are now on our own personal journey of understanding the tragic
plight of the children, youth and young adults in our city. For
the sake of our children and city, please continue the journey.
Be brave. Join the battle. Engage. Research. Share. Mobilize
coworkers. Give of your time. Create company policies and new
hiring practices that provide safety, hope, healing and solutions.
United, Atlanta’s corporate community can come together, in
force, to partner with the organizations engaged in this fight and
eradicate sex trafficking in Atlanta, Georgia and beyond.
We can do this.
