2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

involves taking certain steps in a certain order
to guarantee a certain result. Not just any
steps; not just any order; not just any result.”

10. Why don’t we get more out of
God’sWord?
1. We don't know what to read.
2. We don't know what to look
for.
11. What are we looking for?
• Terms - a term is a key word that is crucial to what an
author has to say because it unlocks meaning.
12. What are we looking for?
• Structure - the basic building blocks of a text.
• Grammatical structure: what is the subject? The
object? The main verb?
• Literary structure:
• Questions and answers
• Cause and effect
• Climax and resolution.
13. What are we looking for?
• Literary form - the genre of the literature in
question. Each genre must be interpreted according
to its proper rules.
• Atmosphere - picking up the feelings from the
biblical text.
15. Interpretation
• Questions - “If you want to understand a biblical text, you’ve got to
bombard it with questions.”
• Answers - Answers to your questions are found in the
text. Observation gives you the data to construct the meaning of the
passage.
• Integration - Putting the answers together into a meaningful
whole. In integration, you reconstruct the meaning of a passage
after you’ve taken it apart to inspect the details.
17. Application
• How does it work for me? The interpreter must first apply the text
to his or her own life before applying it to the lives of others.
• How does it work for others? The bible has implications for
others. How does this passage apply to your family? Your
friends? Your bible study group? Your coworkers?
18. Application
•As you develop points of application, be sure to
record them in sentences that are:
•Complete and grammatically correct.
•Written in the present tense.
•Application oriented.
The more time that you spend observing a text, the less time you will spend in interpreting the text and the more accurate your interpretation will be.
