Key Words
Learning Objectives


To recognise two important word classes in a
sentence.
Introduction


Nouns are names.



Verbs are actions.







For Nouns, there are proper and common nouns for
special and general things.
For Verbs, there are present and past actions,
continuous actions or not.
With a greater understanding of what Nouns and
Verbs are, we are ready to learn the importance
they play in a sentence.
Nouns and Verbs as Key Words (KW)










Nouns and Verbs carry the key meaning in a
sentence as they talk about who doing what.
The sentence can be a question, a statement or a
request.
Like what you have seen in Determiners.
Therefore, finding the nouns and verbs enable us
to quickly understand a sentence's key idea.
Nouns and Verbs are called Key Words because
they help us find Key Ideas.
Examples of Nouns & Verbs as KW
1) Why did the girl climb the tree?
2) Why did the boy hide himself in the bushes?
3) Studying hard is the key to success.
4) As children, we must respect and obey our
parents.
5) Can Alex and I go to the zoo?
6) May I go to the toilet?


Can you tell the key ideas in the sentences from
their KWs?
Uses of Key Words


Reading the NV quickly across any sentence is
key to getting the key idea in a story. This is
useful for:

1) Reading Comprehension tests
2) Reading newspapers
3) Flipping through the contents of a book to decide
whether it is good
4) Speed reading in the internet where there are
many stories

LL Lower primary B - Key Words

  • 2. Learning Objectives  To recognise two important word classes in a sentence.
  • 3. Introduction  Nouns are names.  Verbs are actions.    For Nouns, there are proper and common nouns for special and general things. For Verbs, there are present and past actions, continuous actions or not. With a greater understanding of what Nouns and Verbs are, we are ready to learn the importance they play in a sentence.
  • 4. Nouns and Verbs as Key Words (KW)      Nouns and Verbs carry the key meaning in a sentence as they talk about who doing what. The sentence can be a question, a statement or a request. Like what you have seen in Determiners. Therefore, finding the nouns and verbs enable us to quickly understand a sentence's key idea. Nouns and Verbs are called Key Words because they help us find Key Ideas.
  • 5. Examples of Nouns & Verbs as KW 1) Why did the girl climb the tree? 2) Why did the boy hide himself in the bushes? 3) Studying hard is the key to success. 4) As children, we must respect and obey our parents. 5) Can Alex and I go to the zoo? 6) May I go to the toilet?  Can you tell the key ideas in the sentences from their KWs?
  • 6. Uses of Key Words  Reading the NV quickly across any sentence is key to getting the key idea in a story. This is useful for: 1) Reading Comprehension tests 2) Reading newspapers 3) Flipping through the contents of a book to decide whether it is good 4) Speed reading in the internet where there are many stories
  • 7. Learning Activity  For the questions below, practice underlining the KW. 1) Why did the boy jump into the river when he saw the bees? 2) Which word in the passage has tells you that the writer is very sad? 3) What did the writer do to enrage his teacher?

  • 10. In summary  Key Words are NV.  Key Words give us the key idea of a sentence  When we read Key Words quickly in a story, we get the story's key ideas.
