Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States who led the country during the Civil War and worked to keep the Union united. He is renowned for the Gettysburg Address and issuing the Emancipation Proclamation that freed slaves in the Confederacy. Lincoln taught himself to read and write, was known for his honesty, and helped standardize US currency before being assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre in 1865.
