The short but fulfilling life of
Abraham Lincoln
February 12, 1809- April 15,
1865
By: Raina Sargent
Abraham Lincoln
dedicated his life and
efforts to champion the
rights of all Americans‘.
He had done so by
building up his education
and committing
to himself not to give
up. Lincoln had no
formal education
and his speech was
not very well spoken.
Once he had made his decision to take a stand for
something he followed through with that.

• He had been elected to the Illinois State Legislature as a member of
the Whig party and served 4 terms
• During his term as a Sangamon County representative, he was part of
a group “Long Nine” in the Sangamon delegation. They were notable
for above average height and their role in moving the state capital to
Springfield.
• Only serving a single term in the U.S. House of Representatives 1847-
1849 as he did not find many political allies
• His term in office may have been short-lived but he made use of it to

• Signed into effect on January 1st, 1863 during the Civil War
• Changed the legal status under the federal law of more than 3.5
million enslaved African Americans, only freed slaves held in the

• This would have forever protected slavery instead of abolishing it
• To this day, it lies dormant and ready to be ratified
• It had been approved in both the House and Senate but ratified by
some states.
• Was approved by Lincoln, which may seem to be contradictory for all
that he stood for
Gettysburg Address
• This would become Lincolns
most famous speech and
one of the most important
speeches in American
history.
• 15,000 people became
witnesses as he delivered
his speech at one of the
bloodiest battlefields of the
Civil War.
• A score is equal to 20 years,
he had been referencing 87
years prior- in 1776 when
the Declaration of
Independence was signed.
November 19th,
1963
Gettysburg Address
• There were said to be 5 versions written, with each of which had
been written differently and given to different people.
• Only one had been signed by Lincoln
• All of them started off with the same opening line “Four score and
seven years ago”
• Original owners: George Bancroft- historian, Edward Everett- chief
speaker at the Gettysburg cemetery, John Hay- white house assistant,
John G. Nicolay- President Lincoln’s personal secretary, Colonel

Assassination of Lincoln
• April 14th, 1965 Good Friday
• Lincoln and his wife had gone to Fords
Theatre
• The comedy they were watching, Our
American Cousin
• John Wilkes Booth an actor in the play
had snuck off stage and found Lincoln and
fired a single shot to the back of his head
• He had the knowledge prior to that
evening that Lincoln would be there and
where he would be seated
• Booth had intended to abduct Lincoln in
hopes of reviving the Confederate cause
What was it about Lincoln that was unique to America
and to our study of history prior to 1865

cause in liberty
• He had written a very important document, the Emancipation
Proclamation. This would state that the slaves would be freed in
confederate territory
• Lincoln was our first president to lead the country into war
My thoughts on Lincoln
• I would be a supporter of Lincoln and his attribution to abolish slavery
• Lincoln as a person strived to do what was right for everyone
• He was a hard worker who had not been handed his property he
worked for everything and supported what he worked for
• Lincoln made sure to surround himself with people that would build
him up to help him to his greatness and achieve those goals
How the legacy of Lincoln portrayed on
todays society
• Lincoln had dedicated a large portion of his life to equality for all
• He was against the owning of slaves and had fought for them to
abolish slavery for years so the African Americans would have the
same rights as humans that white people did.
• His role put into effect the various amendments 13, 14, & 15. Which it
would almost take a full century for the 15th Amendment to be
followed as original intentions
• He is thought to be one of the greatest Presidents of all
Daily Life in the 19th century
• Lincoln was a hard worker who was not afraid to get his hands dirty
• He was different than most white people who of his career path as he
was not a slave owner.
• Lincoln had made more himself known by his ability to tell great
stories
• He was not liked by all due to his opposition of slavery
Things I learned about Abraham Lincoln
• He had been a lawyer, even tried a case in
front of the supreme court
• Lincoln was not born in the state of Illinois,
he moved there as a young man with his
birth family
• He had been the most photographed
president.
• He was the tallest president coming in at
6’4”
• He had photos created which were then
imprinted later onto the $5 bill and the
penny.
Fun Facts of the Lincoln Memorial
• Inside of the Lincoln memorial there is a
misspelled word. As it is made of marble and
each word was chiseled it was hard to correct
this mistake. “EUTURE, not future” is left as a
reminder of human fallibility.
• The Lincoln Memorial juts 66 feet into the
earth at its deepest point to support the
weight of the marble
• His hands are positioned in American Sign
Language letters A and L, Lincoln himself had
signed the charter for Gallaudet University
Fun Facts
• Lincoln may have been murdered by John Wilkes Booth but earlier in
life he was saved from being hit by a train from his brother Edwin
Booth
• Lincoln was an accomplished wrestler making it into the Wrestling
Hall of Fame by the young age of 21; he was defeated only once in
about 300 matches.
• Lincoln never slept in the Lincoln bedroom, it was his personal office.
• He was the only president to have obtained a patent, No. 6469.
Conclusion:
Abraham Lincoln had a shortened life as it was taken from him selfishly.
He was self taught educationally which pushed him to strive even
further to reach beyond the attainable. He was a selfless man who
wanted to unite the nation.
