1. SEMINAR TOPIC:
TOTAL STATION SURVEY
PRESENTING BY : Viky Gogoi
4th semester
DEPARTMENT : Earth and Environmental
science
2. Content
What is total station?
What is the working principle ?
Important operation of total station
Applications
References
3. What is total station survey?
Its a modern surveying instrument
that integrate electronic
theodolite with an electronic
distance meter
Theodolite uses a movable
telescope to measure angle in
both horizontal and vertical plane
4.
5. What is the working principle of total
station ?
Total station capable of emitting microwave and
infrared signals . The wavelength of these
emitted waves helps in calculating the distance
between the point
Here the distance is calculated by multiplying the
time taken to cover a certain distance by the
velocity
6. IMPORTANT OPERATION OF TOTAL
STATION
• Distance measurement
• Angle measurement
• Data processing
• Display
• Electronic book
7. Distance measuring
• Electronic distance
measuring (EDM)
instrument is a major
part of total station
• The accuracy of
measurement varies from
5mm to 10mm per
kilometer
8. Angle measurement
• The electronic theodolite part of total station is
used for measuring vertical and horizontal angle
• The accuracy of angle measurement varies from
2 to 6 sec.
9. Data processing
• This instrument is provided with in inbuilt
microprocessor.
• These processor is also capable of applying
temperature and pressure correction to
measurement, if atmospheric temperature and
pressure are supplied
10. Display
• Electronic display unit is capable of displaying
various values when respective keys are pressed
• These system is also capable of displaying
vertical and horizontal distance, vertical and
horizontal angles etc .
11. Electronic book
• Each point data can be stored in an electronic
note book
• The capacity of electronic note book varies from
2000 points to 4000 point data
• Surveyor can unload the data stored in note
book to computer and reuse the notebook
