SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model) is a collection of specifications that define communication between learning content and learning management systems. It allows for reusable learning objects that can be delivered across different LMSs. SCORM specifies content packaging, communication between content and LMS via an API, and sequencing and navigation of content. It defines data models, how content is aggregated and packaged, and rules for tracking interactions and assessment results. SCORM aims to facilitate interoperability and accessibility of e-learning content.

Some of the Department of Defense (DOD) services have had negative experiences when attempting to share SCORM content packages between their various LMS implementations primarily due to differences with both user interfaces and the Application Programming Interface (API) Implementation. The vision of plug-n-play interoperability of learning content is usually achieved only after several additional hours of modifying the content to work in a particular LMS implementation. In order to achieve adoption on a global scale, SCORM 2.0 must have a strategy to improve interoperability by standardizing the user interface controls in further support of flexibility, usability, accessibility, and durability. This paper provides a background and summary of the Navy's successes with extending the SCORM to support standardized user interface options, and further proposes creating or incorporating a new user interface interoperability specification and a recommendation for supplying a standardized API Implementation as part of the Core SCORM.

Scorm Implementation Strategies for Mobile

Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Initiative

During the past three months I have been in contact with several organizations and vendors that have either already implemented SCORM or have been working on implementing SCORM as part of their mobile learning strategy. This helped me to identify the use cases for this presentation. My objectives for this presentation and also for my ongoing research interests are the following: 1) Generate a list of mobile learning technologies that use SCORM. 2) Publish general best practices for designing SCORM content for mobile devices. 3) Identify which technologies are available when implementing SCORM for mobile devices. 4) Identify potential updates to SCORM that will enhance future mobile learning. Today I will talk about some specific mLearning examples and provide you with the 5 W’s (who, what, when, where, and why) of each use case and how SCORM is being addressed as part of their mLearning strategy. Finally, I will conclude the session with the outcomes I recorded from analyzing these use cases. SCORM Implementation Challenges for Mobile

There are several technical challenges associated with deploying SCORM content because the current technologies used in SCORM are based on HTTP and JavaScript, which have limited support on mid-end mobile devices. The good news is there are other technical approaches that don't use HTTP and JavaScript that you could leverage as an alternative. Participants in this session will learn the issues related to deploying SCORM content on mobile devices. Many people are looking for a more lightweight mobile-friendly version of SCORM that can be deployed on mobile devices. This session will look at existing technologies that can be leveraged as alternatives, rather than waiting for SCORM to be updated. You’ll see several example use cases of SCORM implementations and hear the lessons learned from ADL.

Regardless of the buzz around the TinCan API, SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 still enjoy better support as a way of ensuring standardized communication between online courses and their corresponding learning management system. SCORM 1.2 is in all likelihood the most commonly used specification in the industry. The biggest advantage of SCORM 1.2 is that uploading content to the LMS is as easy as uploading a ZIP file. Unfortunately, SCORM 1.2 lacks many of the features of the more modern specifications, like SCORM 2004

The world is witnessing the electronic revolution in many fields of life such as health, education, government and commerce. E-learning is considered one of the hot topics in the e-revolution as it brings with it rapid change and greater opportunities to increase learning ability in colleges and schools. The fields of Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS) are full of open source and commercial products, however LCMS systems in general inherit the drawbacks of information system such as weakness in user expected information retrieval and semantic modelling and searching of contents & courses. In this paper, we propose a new prototype of LCMS that uses the Semantic Web technologies and Ontology Reasoner with logical rules, as an inference engine to satisfy the constraints and criteria specified by a user, and retrieves relevant content from the domain ontology in an organized fashion. This enables construction of a user-specific course, by semantic querying for topics of interest. We present the development of an Ontology-oriented Inference-based Learning Content Management System OILCMS, its architecture, conception and strengths.

Applying Semantic Web Technologies to Services of e-learning System

Although of the semantic web technologies utilization in the learning development field is a new research area, some authors have already proposed their idea of how an effective that operate. Specifically, from analysis of the literature in the field, we have identified three different types of existing applications that actually employ these technologies to support learning. These applications aim at: Enhancing the learning objects reusability by linking them to an ontological description of the domain, or, more generally, describe relevant dimension of the learning process in an ontology, then; providing a comprehensive authoring system to retrieve and organize web material into a learning course, and constructing advanced strategies to present annotated resources to the user, in the form of browsing facilities, narrative generation and final rendering of a course. On difference with the approaches cited above, here we propose an approach that is modeled on narrative studies and on their transposition in the digital world. In the rest of the paper, we present the theoretical basis that inspires this approach, and show some examples that are guiding our implementation and testing of these ideas within e-learning. By emerging the idea of the ontologies are recognized as the most important component in achieving semantic interoperability of e-learning resources. The benefits of their use have already been recognized in the learning technology community. In order to better define different aspects of ontology applications in e-learning, researchers have given several classifications of ontologies. We refer to a general one given in that differentiates between three dimensions ontologies can describe: content, context, and structure. Most of the present research has been dedicated to the first group of ontologies. A well-known example of such an ontology is based on the ACM Computer Classification System (ACM CCS) and defined by Resource Description Framework Schema (RDFS). It’s used in the MOODLE to classify learning objects with a goal to improve searching. The chapter will cover the terms of the semantic web and e-learning systems design and management in e-learning (MOODLE) and some of studies depend on e-learning and semantic web, thus the tools will be used in this paper, and lastly we shall discuss the expected contribution. The special attention will be putted on the above topics.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction. This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence. The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth. Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration. The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority. Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages. Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg, The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation. This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability. Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots. The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee. • The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act. • The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students.
