1. About NEET-UG
NEET UG 2023 Overview: NEET UG 2023 stands as one of India's most significant
and widely discussed competitive examinations. It not only serves as the gateway to
India's medical profession but also shapes the future of countless aspirants, often in
irreversible ways.
In essence, NEET UG is the competitive examination responsible for screening
candidates for MBBS and BDS seats across all medical colleges in India. Moreover, it is a
prerequisite for those aspiring to pursue MBBS abroad.
The administration of NEET UG falls under the purview of the National Testing Agency
(NTA). Like many other aspects of life, the COVID-19 pandemic has left its mark on NEET
UG as well. Consequently, the NTA has implemented some minor adjustments in the
conduct of NEET UG for the year 2023.
Furthermore, candidates will now have more options in terms of question attempt
methods compared to pre-pandemic times. Nonetheless, the fundamental
characteristics of NEET-UG remain unchanged.
NEET UG continues to adhere to a pen and paper format, requiring candidates to record
their responses on an OMR sheet using a blue or black ball-point pen, as in previous
years. The duration of the exam remains at 3 hours.
The language options for the NEET UG exam remain the same, with candidates able to
choose from English, Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Kannada, Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam,
Punjabi, Odia, Telugu, Tamil, and Urdu.
Similarly, the format of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) remains unchanged for NEET
UG 2023. The total number of MCQs will be 200, with candidates required to attempt
180 questions only.
The negative marking policy remains consistent, with candidates receiving 4 marks for
each correct answer and losing 1 mark for each incorrect answer, maintaining continuity
with previous exams.
Understanding the NEET-UG Qualifying Score:
2. In 2023, it becomes crucial to differentiate between "scoring the cut-off" and
"qualifying" the NEET UG, along with grasping the concept of percentiles to gain a
comprehensive understanding.
Firstly, NEET UG assesses an aspirant's proficiency in Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.
This evaluation serves as a benchmark to determine if an aspirant merits admission to
an MBBS seat in various Government Medical Colleges in India. Thus, the minimum
score required for securing such a seat is referred to as the NEET UG "cut-off" for that
particular year. However, this is not the whole story.
NEET-UG also evaluates whether candidates who did not attain the aforementioned
opportunity deserve to practice as Doctors in India. The duties and authority associated
with a licensed Doctor in India necessitate establishing a threshold in academic
proficiency below which one forfeits eligibility to practice.
Crucially, every Doctor holding a license to practice in India enjoys equal privileges,
regardless of their qualification's level or source. Whether the Doctor holds an MBBS
from AIIMS or any medical university worldwide, if they possess a license from the
National Medical Commission, their professional opinion holds equal legal weight.
This underscores the importance of "qualifying" NEET-UG, making it mandatory for
eligibility to apply for a medical license in India. Thus, the minimum NEET UG score
required to apply for a medical license for practice in India, regardless of the medical
university or country of MBBS completion, is termed the "qualifying" score.
Variation in NEET-UG Cut-off: Undoubtedly, the NEET UG cut-off score fluctuates
annually due to the inherent variables in every competitive exam. Consequently, there is
a necessity to maintain the qualifying score as a fixed percentile. Hence, an
understanding of the percentile concept is essential to gain a precise understanding of
this aspect.
Eligibility for NEET UG Counseling:
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has succeeded the Medical Council of India,
ushering in numerous changes. The eligibility criteria for candidates to partake in NEET
UG Counseling hinge on two factors: their marks in Class XII or equivalent, and their
NEET UG 2023 Score.
3. As per the tradition, a prerequisite for participation in NEET UG Counseling 2023
remains the successful completion of 10+2 or its equivalent in the Science stream. This
entails clearing Biology (or Biotechnology), Physics, and Chemistry as main subjects.
Furthermore, candidates must attain a minimum of 50% marks if they belong to the
unreserved category. For those in the reserved categories, the threshold is lower.
Candidates classified under the Other Backward Class (OBC) are required to achieve a
minimum score of 45%, while for SC/ST candidates, the minimum requirement stands at
a mere 40%.
