Connectivism was presented as a learning theory for the digital age and connectivists claim that recent developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and, more specifically, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) support their assumptions of knowledge connectivity. Yet, very little has been done to investigate this brave allegation. Does the advancement in artificial neural network studies support connectivism’s assumptions? And if yes, to what extent? This paper addresses the aforementioned question by tackling the core concepts of ANN and matching them with connectivist's assumptions. The study employed the qualitative content analysis approach where the researcher started with purposely selected and relatively small content samples in connectivism and ANN literature. The results revealed that ANN partially supports connectivism’s assumptions but this does not mean that other learning theories such as behaviorism and constructivism are not supported as well. The findings enlighten our understanding of connectivism and where it may be applied.

Information system designers with a “user experience” perspective strive to create applications and services that people find enjoyable, unique, and responsive to their needs and preferences. These designers use techniques and tools from the disciplines of human-computer interaction, anthropology, and sociology such as ethnographic research and the user-centered design approach to specify the desired experience for the customer or consumer. An emerging theme in this design philosophy is that the user experience is in part determined through “co-creation” when users add content, comments, or links to that contained in the application or service. This emphasis discounts the contribution of the processes and activities that are not explicitly part of the user experience.
In contrast, designers with a systems and data or process analysis mindset follow different goals and methods. They strive for efficiency, robustness, scalability, and standardization. These design goals require identification and analysis of information requirements, information flows and dependencies, and feedback loops. Concepts and techniques from information architecture, data and process modeling, industrial engineering, and software development define this approach.
Given these vastly different design perspectives and goals, it isn’t surprising that there is often little collaboration and communication between the user experience designers and systems analysts. Whether it is for organizational reasons, for ideological ones, or just because it is hard to work effectively with someone who thinks so differently even when you try - the outcome is the same --- tensions, conflicts, and sub-optimal design.
I don’t believe that these tensions and conflicts between user experience and systems analysis are intrinsic or fundamental. But to avoid them, we need a more comprehensive and robust approach to designing information-intensive applications and services that combines aspects of these “front end” and “back end” approaches. I’ve called this emerging design discipline “Document Engineering,” and its essence is a set of analysis and design methods that treat the interactions, information requirements and preferences associated with the customer or consumer in an abstract way so they can be compared and integrated with those associated with automated or computational actors. This more abstract approach more naturally encourages an end-to-end systems design philosophy and makes it much easier to consider alternative service system designs. These might involve moving some functions or interactions from the user experience to the invisible back stage (or vice versa), replacing or augmenting a person-to-person interaction with self-service or eliminating it completely through automation, substituting one service provider for another (e.g, through outsourcing) to improve quality or reduce cost, and so on.

To have the ability to “think outside the box” is generally regarded as something positive. At a moment in time when resources are scarce, and the problems facing us are many, innovation and professional excellence becomes a requirement, rather than a matter of choice. At the core of our attempts to come up with new, and better solutions are the digital technologies. Within the structural engineering context, the different types of off-the-shelf packages for finite element analysis play a central role. These “black-box” types of software packages exemplify how user-friendliness may have harmful consequences within a field where knowledge and the successful mastery of relevant skills is key, and consequently- ignorance may lead to fatal results. These tools make any effort “venturing outside” difficult to achieve. A technical paradigm shift is called for- that places learning and creative, informed exploration at the heart of the user experience. The paper proposes a core ontology of socio-cyberphysical systems for resource interoperability. The ontology comprises the main concepts and relationships which are identified as relevant to model such systems. The approach considers a socio-cyber-physical system comprising cyber space, physical space, and mental space. In the ontology, these spaces are represented by sets of resources. The ontology provides the resources with a common vocabulary to share information and services and therefore makes these resources interoperable. The core ontology is specialized for a socio-cyber-physical system embedded in robotics domain. Technology of online communities is proposed to be used for resource communication.

In the last decade, ontologies have played a key technology role for information sharing and agents interoperability in different application domains. In semantic web domain, ontologies are efficiently used toface the great challenge of representing the semantics of data, in order to bring the actual web to its full
power and hence, achieve its objective. However, using ontologies as common and shared vocabularies requires a certain degree of interoperability between them. To confront this requirement, mapping ontologies is a solution that is not to be avoided. In deed, ontology mapping build a meta layer that allows different applications and information systems to access and share their informations, of course, after resolving the different forms of syntactic, semantic and lexical mismatches. In the contribution presented in this paper, we have integrated the semantic aspect based on an external lexical resource, wordNet, to design a new algorithm for fully automatic ontology mapping. This fully automatic character features the
main difference of our contribution with regards to the most of the existing semi-automatic algorithms of ontology mapping, such as Chimaera, Prompt, Onion, Glue, etc. To better enhance the performances of our algorithm, the mapping discovery stage is based on the combination of two sub-modules. The former
analysis the concept’s names and the later analysis their properties. Each one of these two sub-modules is
it self based on the combination of lexical and semantic similarity measures.
This is an under-the-hood look at the Correlation Technology Platform in action. All of Wikipedia's 3.5 million articles have been converted to "Knowledge Fragments." Frame-by-frame, with in-depth notations, Correlation Technology is used in this actual online demonstration to reveal how connections from "population density" to "terrorism" are discovered and presented.

An invited keynote talk given at the Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) conference in Honolulu, 2014. Begins with some fun observations about being an academic in Hawaii. Motivated both by my early work studying dyadic interaction with Belvedere and a theoretical view of the multi-dimensionality of distributed learning in socio-technical networks and consequent analytic challenges, outlines a framework called "Traces" that addresses these challenges. Most of the examples are of analysis of Tapped In, a successful online network of educational professionals from 1997-2013. Probably the most comprehensive overview of my research to date.

Information is growing more rapidly on the World Wide Web (WWW) has made it necessary to make all
this information not only available to people but also to the machines. Ontology and token are widely being
used to add the semantics in data processing or information processing. A concept formally refers to the
meaning of the specification which is encoded in a logic-based language, explicit means concepts,
properties that specification is machine readable and also a conceptualization model how people think
about things of a particular subject area. In modern scenario more ontologies has been developed on
various different topics, results in an increased heterogeneity of entities among the ontologies. The concept
integration becomes vital over last decade and a tool to minimize heterogeneity and empower the data
processing. There are various techniques to integrate the concepts from different input sources, based on
the semantic or syntactic match values. In this paper, an approach is proposed to integrate concept
(Ontologies or Tokens) using edit distance or n-gram match values between pair of concept and concept
frequency is used to dominate the integration process. The proposed techniques performance is compared
with semantic similarity based integration techniques on quality parameters like Recall, Precision, FMeasure
& integration efficiency over the different size of concepts. The analysis indicates that edit
distance value based interaction outperformed n-gram integration and semantic similarity techniques.

In short, a flexible data and processing fabric is needed to enable the dynamic redirection of data and compute tasks throughout the lifecycle of an experiment. In this talk, we illustrate how we easily leveraged Globus services to instrument the ACE research testbed at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility with flexible data and task orchestration capabilities.
Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSageGlobus
NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?

Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

About Correlation Technology
1. About “Correlation Technology”
The Correlation Technology Platform implements a unique, new computational model for
knowledge discovery and exploration. This model emulates human methods for decomposition,
storage, and utilization of data. When used appropriately, this model can deliver practical
solutions to a number of complex and previously intractable challenges faced by government,
corporate, and cultural entities in the era of “big data”.
The “Correlation Technology” approach starts by recognizing that all human knowledge
embedded in text is expressed in the form of “Knowledge Fragments” - each of which
encapsulates an “intrinsic relation” and its bound “relata”. There is a substantial cadre of
intrinsic relations which are innately comprehended by humans. For example, the fragment,
“engine in car”, expresses a “containment” relation. The fragment, “fingers on hand”, expresses
an “attachment” relation. The fragment, “portrait of President Obama”, expresses a
“representation” relation. Other types of intrinsic relations include extensional relations and
intentional relations, class relations, mereological relations, topological relations, existential
relations, action relations, transitional relations, causal relations, dependency relations, semiotic
relations, mediated relations, conventional relations, and property-based relations. Each of these
types and sub-types of relations is expressed using one or more specific words in every natural
language. The containment relation expressed by “engine in car” is a valid concept in any
language on earth. The natural language terms expressing each and every such relation is then
mapped. Unlike any previous technology, Correlation Technology decomposes input resources
such as web pages, emails, or text documents by extracting all such relations and their relata in
an exhaustive one-way transform.
The resulting Knowledge Fragments are stored in a data store generically referred to as an
“infobase”. Each of these Knowledge Fragments is like a “note” a student might take when
listening to a lecture. Correlation Technology further acknowledges that successful human
reasoning requires that the human mind store such “notes” without any constraint upon
subsequent recollection and use. For this reason, the infobase is schema-free, and every
Knowledge Fragment is “equally eligible” for use in process. This additional aspect of
Correlation Technology is not present in any prior Knowledge Discovery technique.
Humans utilize two methods for reasoning – “Connect the Dots” and “Free Association”. For
both these methods, humans iteratively link “note” to “note”, starting with some “origin” note,
and build a chain of notes that lead to some “destination” note which serves as conclusion. In
response to any stimulus, including an explicit question, humans will construct hundreds or
thousands of such chains – all of which are related, and with each note “link” of each chain
representing a qualitative, logical “correlation” to every prior “link”. In response to any “N-
dimensional query”, the penultimate step in the Correlation Technology process is to build an
“answer space” or result set of such qualitative, logical “correlations” for the contents of the
infobase. Hundreds or thousands of such correlations are typically constructed from even a
relatively small infobase.
The final step for utilizing Correlation Technology is to apply analytics to the “answer space”.
Because the correlations are qualitative assertions, the analytical approach may include statistical
methods, logical methods, rule-based algorithms, and natural language techniques. For each type
of use, the types of analysis required will differ, but the same goal always applies – find
actionable insights from overwhelmingly complex data; find important relationships between
terms, phrases, concepts or entities where those relationships can not be discovered through
entity-linking, navigational, or subjective statistical means.
