These slides are from a talk I was invited to give at the Teacher Scientist Network (www.tsn.org.uk) Master Class on Reproductive Technologies.
This turns out to be a series of CPD events for science teachers from East Anglia, hosted on the Norwich Research Park. The aim of the events is specifically to inform teachers about cutting edge developments in biology and biomedicine (rather than, say, discuss suitable classroom activities). It looks like they've got a really good thing going - congratulations to Phil Smith who organises the TSN.

With hindsight, on the basis of discussion after the talk, I might have added in a couple of things. A Proposal for Legislation: How To Reduce Recidivism Rates Among Utah Female ...
Female recidivism and unintended pregnancy rates are rising in Utah and the United States. Both create a great amount of financial responsibility to the state and federal government. Unintended pregnancy causes strain on female parolees and increases risk for recidivistic activity by destabilizing the reintegration process. While some states are beginning to offer programs surrounding reproductive health to women during incarceration, they are few and far between. Without established standards these courses are subjective and left to the correctional administration’s discretion. In Utah there are virtually no programs available in prisons and jails offering reproductive education. In this project I address with Dr. Larry Bench female recidivism and unintended pregnancy in Utah and the United States. Based on our research, we find many incarcerated women lack knowledge surrounding reproductive health, often holding negative views towards pregnancy, and have a history of unintended pregnancy, many of which have high risk complications that are costly. We propose a cost-effective solution for Utah through legislation that addresses both issues. Establishing a standard equal opportunity class led by a knowledgeable educator on female reproductive health for voluntary female offenders incarcerated in Utah will; ensure equal opportunity access to information, reduce recidivism and the risk for unintended pregnancy, decrease the tax dollars, and aid in the reintegration process. By decreasing pregnancies that are unintended we will enable parolees and probationers to become reintegrated without added stressors and responsibilities that arise with pregnancy. This will reduce the risk for recidivistic activity and cost to the state while building more stable families and women who are reintegrated into the community.

A Higher Education Academy STEM event "Teaching Bioethics:Ethical aspects of innovations in biomedicine" took place at the University of Leicester (UK) in May 2012. In this keynote presentation, Anna Smajdor (University of East Anglia) led reflections on the implications of recent developments in fertility technology.
Since In vitro fertilisation was first introduced in 1978, the potential applications have developed in ways that were not initially envisaged and we have ended up with complications defining “father” and “mother”. Similarly, who is the “patient” when a woman receives medical treatment to deal with the infertility of her partner (and why is this considered a “medical” treatment at all? Development of new technologies has moved way beyond the original expectation that IVF would be used in the context of a traditional family.
New reproductive technologies, she argued, have blurred and stretched the obvious biological definitions of reproduction. For example, single mothers, same-sex couples and women beyond the menopause can all become parents. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis and the notion of saviour siblings allow for a certain degree of selection regarding the characteristics of the future child and we now stand on the brink of gametogenesis where it will be feasible to develop artificial gametes outside of the body.

Stimulation of Olfactory Cells:
Odorant dissolves in mucus and attaches to receptors on olfactory cilia.
Involves a cascade effect through G-proteins and second messengers, leading to depolarization and action potential generation in the olfactory nerve.
Quality of a Good Odorant:
Small (3-20 Carbon atoms), volatile, water-soluble, and lipid-soluble.
Facilitated by odorant-binding proteins in mucus.
Membrane Potential and Action Potential:
Resting membrane potential: -55mV.
Action potential frequency in the olfactory nerve increases with odorant strength.
Adaptation Towards the Sense of Smell:
Rapid adaptation within the first second, with further slow adaptation.
Psychological adaptation greater than receptor adaptation, involving feedback inhibition from the central nervous system.
Primary Sensations of Smell:
Camphoraceous, Musky, Floral, Pepperminty, Ethereal, Pungent, Putrid.
Odor Detection Threshold:
Examples: Hydrogen sulfide (0.0005 ppm), Methyl-mercaptan (0.002 ppm).
Some toxic substances are odorless at lethal concentrations.
Characteristics of Smell:
Odor blindness for single substances due to lack of appropriate receptor protein.
Behavioral and emotional influences of smell.
Transmission of Olfactory Signals:
From olfactory cells to glomeruli in the olfactory bulb, involving lateral inhibition.

Recomendações da OMS sobre cuidados maternos e neonatais para uma experiência pós-natal positiva.
Em consonância com os ODS – Objetivos do Desenvolvimento Sustentável e a Estratégia Global para a Saúde das Mulheres, Crianças e Adolescentes, e aplicando uma abordagem baseada nos direitos humanos, os esforços de cuidados pós-natais devem expandir-se para além da cobertura e da simples sobrevivência, de modo a incluir cuidados de qualidade.
Estas diretrizes visam melhorar a qualidade dos cuidados pós-natais essenciais e de rotina prestados às mulheres e aos recém-nascidos, com o objetivo final de melhorar a saúde e o bem-estar materno e neonatal.
Uma “experiência pós-natal positiva” é um resultado importante para todas as mulheres que dão à luz e para os seus recém-nascidos, estabelecendo as bases para a melhoria da saúde e do bem-estar a curto e longo prazo. Uma experiência pós-natal positiva é definida como aquela em que as mulheres, pessoas que gestam, os recém-nascidos, os casais, os pais, os cuidadores e as famílias recebem informação consistente, garantia e apoio de profissionais de saúde motivados; e onde um sistema de saúde flexível e com recursos reconheça as necessidades das mulheres e dos bebês e respeite o seu contexto cultural.
Estas diretrizes consolidadas apresentam algumas recomendações novas e já bem fundamentadas sobre cuidados pós-natais de rotina para mulheres e neonatos que recebem cuidados no pós-parto em unidades de saúde ou na comunidade, independentemente dos recursos disponíveis.
É fornecido um conjunto abrangente de recomendações para cuidados durante o período puerperal, com ênfase nos cuidados essenciais que todas as mulheres e recém-nascidos devem receber, e com a devida atenção à qualidade dos cuidados; isto é, a entrega e a experiência do cuidado recebido. Estas diretrizes atualizam e ampliam as recomendações da OMS de 2014 sobre cuidados pós-natais da mãe e do recém-nascido e complementam as atuais diretrizes da OMS sobre a gestão de complicações pós-natais.
O estabelecimento da amamentação e o manejo das principais intercorrências é contemplada.
