MIDEST, the global show for all industrial subcontracting know-how

Despite a sluggish overall economic situation, bad weather in eastern and central France and protests by farmers, MIDEST, the world’s leading industrial subcontracting show, which ran for the 43rd time from 19th to 22nd November at the Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre, was a real success. On opening it matched the previous year’s show in terms of the number of exhibitors (1,702 companies from 38 countries) and exhibition space but it then went on to attract 42,101 professionals from all sectors of industry, which was an increase of 7% on 2012. Not only were the numbers up but the visitors were highly qualified and came with plans for actual business projects. The numerous events and initiatives reached out to a broad public, including, as they did, the show’s focus on energy, the choice of its first non-European country of the year, South Africa, the special Algerian day, the promotion of mechanical engineering trades to young girls by the FIM (mechanical engineering federation) and the b2fair– Business to Fairs® business meetings.

MIDEST, the global show for all industrial subcontracting know-how

Slimme technologie leidt tot doorbraken in alle economische sectoren • Nieuw tijdperk breekt aan waarin basisinnovaties oude structuren opschudden • Interconnectiviteit door smart technologie heeft impact op alle economische sectoren • Slimme technologie als aanjager van economische groei De wereld staat aan de vooravond van een nieuwe fase in het internettijdperk, waarin alle dingen met elkaar gaan communiceren en - zonder tussenkomst van de mens - autonoom acties uitvoeren. Smart technology zal resulteren in nieuwe basisinnovaties die zullen leiden tot een afbraak van oude structuren en impact hebben op alle economische sectoren. Dit concludeert ABN AMRO in het rapport ‘SMART future. Slimme technologie raakt ons hele leven’, dat tijdens de Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven wordt gepresenteerd. Smart schudt gehele economie op Op dit moment bevinden we ons in een overgangsfase: ‘creative destruction’. Een proces van technologische veranderingen, waarbij bestaande en nieuwe uitvindingen zich ontwikkelen. Deze zullen, net als andere historische technologische doorbraken - van stoommachine tot microchip - uitgroeien tot basinnovaties die de economische structuur blijvend en ingrijpend veranderen. Smart technologie speelt een centrale rol: alles wordt een computer en onderling met elkaar verbonden. ABN AMRO denkt dat deze ontwikkelingen alle sectoren zullen raken. Zoals de zorg - waar robots de nieuwe ‘handen aan het bed’ worden - of de bouw, waar bewoners dankzij domotica hun huis volledig interactief kunnen bedienen. Nu nog via één centraal apparaat, straks mogelijk via spraak of een slimme bril. Ook in de industrie verandert er veel. Slimme fabrieken passen fabricageprocessen zelf aan zodra een storing optreedt. Voor alle sectoren geldt dat structuren en processen worden opgeschud en opnieuw uitgevonden. Van Smart Farming tot Smart Money In haar rapport schetst ABN AMRO toekomstscenario’s voor vijf economische sectoren. Zo vervult de Nederlandse agrarische sector een internationale voortrekkersrol op het gebied van Smart Farming. Deze nieuwe stap in agri-automatisering laat producenten betere beslissingen nemen met behulp van gedetailleerde meet- en regelhulpmiddelen. In de logistieke sector werken pioniers aan het Cross Chain Control Center (4C): een regiecentrum waar zij met behulp van slimme IT-toepassingen en datasharing goederenstromen bundelen. Zo zorgen ze voor een hogere beladingsgraad, minder kosten en een lagere CO2-uitstoot. In de bouw neemt de vraag naar Smart Homes toe, waarin door bouwoplossingen bewoners ondanks fysieke ongemakken of ouderdom thuis kunnen blijven wonen. ABN AMRO denkt dat domotica in de komende jaren een vlucht zal nemen: van een koelkast die zelf boodschappen bestelt tot sensoren die bij gebrek aan beweging in huis de thuiszorg zal waarschuwen. - Nederlandse industriële toeleverancier moet inhaalslag maken bij transformatie naar oem’er; - Toeleveranciers willen minder afhankelijkheid, meer internationale afnemers en hogere marges; - Kleine gespecialiseerde toeleveranciers verdienen meer dan gemiddelde oem’er. Het grootste deel van de Nederlandse industrie richt zich op toelevering. Dat is al van oudsher zo: ons land kent traditioneel een grote variëteit aan industriële toeleveranciers in het midden- en kleinbedrijf. De meeste onderdelen gaan naar het buitenland, bijvoorbeeld naar ons belangrijkste afzetland Duitsland. Want Nederland heeft zelf maar weinig grote original equipment manufacturers (oem’ers): bedrijven die onder eigen merknaam complete machines en apparaten op de markt brengen. In addition to – and sometimes at the expense of – traditional product and machine sales. Service turns from being a cost item into an opportunity to provide better service for the customer and thereby generate additional revenue. Servitization in the manufacturing industry can consist of companies proactively offering repair and overhaul services, spare parts and training in addition to their core products. But servitization also includes broader services such as consultancy, financing, insurance and logistics services. Na een aantal jaren van dalende omzetten, zien de vooruitzichten voor de metaalindustrie er nu weer gunstiger uit. Zowel het producenten- als het consumentenvertrouwen is toegenomen. Maar er zijn nog veel meer interessante ontwikkelingen gaande in deze sector. ABN AMRO Lease, Sector Advisory en Economisch Bureau Nederland, hebben daarom de belangrijkste ontwikkelingen in de metaalindustrie op een rij gezet. Deze ontwikkelingen zijn te lezen in de publicatie: Investeren in metaalbewerkingsmachines, low volume, high mix & high complexity. Investeringen in de metaalindustrie worden groter en complexer. De markt vraagt in toenemende mate om producten in kleine aantallen, in een grote diversiteit en van grotere complexiteit. Industriële SLS-printers die metaal kunnen 3D-printen worden steeds meer aangeschaft door innovatieve bedrijven. Een andere belangrijke ontwikkeling is dat connectiviteit een rol gaat spelen en bepalend is voor de richting van de investeringen in de industrie. Het zijn met name innovaties in software die dit alles mogelijk maken. Kortom: software is de nieuwe hardware.

Dutch AgriTech market can triple in ten years Global population growth, labour shortages, scarcity of agricultural land and the need for sustainable food production will give a tremendous impulse to agricultural robotisation. ABN AMRO estimates current worldwide revenue in the ‘AgriTech market’ at more than EUR 6 billion. The Dutch market holds a share of 11.5% in that market, mainly thanks to milking and feeding robots. If the existing bottlenecks are addressed, the Dutch AgriTech market has the potential to triple in ten years from EUR 715 million to EUR 2.5 billion in 2030; that is an average growth of 13% per year.

De coronapandemie heeft enorme economische en maatschappelijke gevolgen. De snelheid en omvang waarmee de pandemie om zich heen heeft gegrepen, roept de vraag op hoe in de toekomst met dergelijke risico’s moet worden omgegaan en vooral wie deze moet dragen. Is het de overheid die altijd het beste antwoord op rampspoed heeft, of is de markt veel beter in staat om ontij te pareren? En is de burger het meest weerbaar binnen zijn eigen cocon, of wanneer hij veiligheid zoekt in gemeenschap met anderen? Het zijn deze fundamentele vragen waarop we in dit nieuwe rapport antwoord hopen te geven. De winnaars van morgen zijn immers de bedrijven en instanties die flexibel kunnen inspelen op onverwachte gebeurtenissen of, nog beter, die een robuuste langetermijnstrategie weten te formuleren. Robuuste strategie Het formuleren van een robuuste strategie is makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan. Het vereist inzicht in de onzekerheden die van invloed zijn op de organisatie en haar ecosysteem. Dit kunnen onzekerheden zijn die specifiek voor een organisatie relevant zijn, of onzekerheden die betrekking hebben op maatschappelijke veranderingen van meer brede aard. In dit rapport gaan we in op twee altijd aanwezige spanningsvelden die momenteel veelvuldig in het publieke debat naar voren komen; het machtsevenwicht tussen overheid en vrije markt en de zoektocht naar een werkbare verhouding tussen individualisme en collectief handelen. De combinatie van die twee spanningsvelden resulteert in vier scenarios voor de toekomst. Dit rapport beschrijft hoe die vier scenarios, op sectorniveau, zich kunnen ontvouwen in de periode na het overwinnen van de huidige crisis. Het doel is niet zozeer om met harde cijfers en puntschattingen precieze voorspellingen te geven, meer om in grote lijnen verschillende toekomstige werelden te schetsen ter ondersteuning van strategische discussies en plannen voor de toekomst. Ondernemen is vooruitzien We nodigen u daarom uit het rapport te downloaden, en de toekomst te verkennen aan de hand van vier alternatieve werelden: Vrijheid voor de sterken, Open hightech-gemeenschap, De eigen staat en De beschermde staat.

De internationale markt voor 3D-printen groeit nog steeds hard. Steeds meer eindproducten worden geprint en vooral metaalprinters produceren op industriële schaal voor de lucht- en ruimtevaart, medische markten, machinebouwers en maakindustrie. In 2015 bedroeg de wereldwijde omzet in de 3D-printing markt 4,9 miljard euro: een stijging van 25,9 procent ten opzichte van 2014. Ook de Nederlandse omzet groeit sneller dan verwacht, concluderen ABN AMRO en Berenschot in een gezamenlijk rapport. In 2016 was de Nederlandse 3D-printing markt goed voor zo’n 100 miljoen euro: een verdubbeling ten opzichte van 2015. ABN AMRO en Berenschot verwachten dat de omzet in 2017 verder zal groeien naar 120 miljoen euro.

Consument dwingt auto-industrie om meer circulair te produceren De auto-industrie verandert en zal in een stroomversnelling komen, omdat de consument anders naar mobiliteit kijkt. Zo bewijst de groeiende vraag naar bedrijfsmodellen als ‘Car-as-a-Service’ en autodelen - een stijging van 300 procent in 2 jaar - dat de auto vaker als dienst wordt beschouwd. Dit leidt tot een verschuiving van eigendom, een hogere bezettingsgraad en daardoor een kortere levensduur van auto’s. Deze optelsom vereist een radicale innovatie van auto-ontwerp en materiaalgebruik, waardoor circulariteit in de auto-industrie prioriteit moet worden.

ABN AMRO schat de Nederlandse marktomzet in 3D printing voor 2015 rond de 45 miljoen euro. Dit is een optelsom van de professionele én de consumentenmarkt. Ondanks de enorme hype rond 3D-printen, is een geschatte Nederlandse marktomzet van 45 miljoen nog steeds beperkt. Een fractie van onze totale industriële productie. 3D-printing als industrie vertegenwoordigt dus maar 0,045% van de Nl omzet in industrie (excl chemie en food). En toch: een groei van ruim 30% per jaar en een disruptief karakter maken 3D-printing tot een ontwikkeling om in de gaten te houden. Het is niet een directe bedreiging voor de traditionele maakindustrie, maar een interessante aanvulling op de huidige productieprocessen. Het Wohlers rapport 2014 schat dat op lange termijn meer dan 2% van de industriële omzet verdiend zal worden met 3D-printen. Dit zou dus een markt betekenen van minimaal 2 miljard euro in Nederland.

A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process. In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds. - These are slides of the talk given at IEEE International Conference on Software Testing Verification and Validation Workshop, ICSTW 2022.

ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of technologies, XML continues to play a vital role in structuring, storing, and transporting data across diverse systems. The recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) present new methodologies for enhancing XML development workflows, introducing efficiency, automation, and intelligent capabilities. This presentation will outline the scope and perspective of utilizing AI in XML development. The potential benefits and the possible pitfalls will be highlighted, providing a balanced view of the subject. We will explore the capabilities of AI in understanding XML markup languages and autonomously creating structured XML content. Additionally, we will examine the capacity of AI to enrich plain text with appropriate XML markup. Practical examples and methodological guidelines will be provided to elucidate how AI can be effectively prompted to interpret and generate accurate XML markup. Further emphasis will be placed on the role of AI in developing XSLT, or schemas such as XSD and Schematron. We will address the techniques and strategies adopted to create prompts for generating code, explaining code, or refactoring the code, and the results achieved. The discussion will extend to how AI can be used to transform XML content. In particular, the focus will be on the use of AI XPath extension functions in XSLT, Schematron, Schematron Quick Fixes, or for XML content refactoring. The presentation aims to deliver a comprehensive overview of AI usage in XML development, providing attendees with the necessary knowledge to make informed decisions. Whether you’re at the early stages of adopting AI or considering integrating it in advanced XML development, this presentation will cover all levels of expertise. By highlighting the potential advantages and challenges of integrating AI with XML development tools and languages, the presentation seeks to inspire thoughtful conversation around the future of XML development. zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex Proofs

zkStudyClub - Reef: Fast Succinct Non-Interactive Zero-Knowledge Regex Proofs

This paper presents Reef, a system for generating publicly verifiable succinct non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs that a committed document matches or does not match a regular expression. We describe applications such as proving the strength of passwords, the provenance of email despite redactions, the validity of oblivious DNS queries, and the existence of mutations in DNA. Reef supports the Perl Compatible Regular Expression syntax, including wildcards, alternation, ranges, capture groups, Kleene star, negations, and lookarounds. Reef introduces a new type of automata, Skipping Alternating Finite Automata (SAFA), that skips irrelevant parts of a document when producing proofs without undermining soundness, and instantiates SAFA with a lookup argument. Our experimental evaluation confirms that Reef can generate proofs for documents with 32M characters; the proofs are small and cheap to verify (under a second).
