A2 Media Studies Advanced Production Portfolio The Pitch By Sam, Megan and Emily “ Dog Days Are Over”-Indie pop By Florence and the Machines
“ Dog Days Are Over” Album: Lungs Released: December 1 st 2008 Re-Release: April 12 th 2010 Length: 4:10 Genre: Folk, Indie pop, indie rock Label: Moshi Moshi Writers: Florence Welch Isabella Summers Singer: Florence Welch This song is the second single Released by Florence and the Machines From their debut Album Lungs.
“ Dog Days Are Over” Video Analysis The action is set with just a white background. The singer is wearing a pure white dress. Powdered white face- (the person she is talking about is not what she seems.) The different range of colour powders explode in different sections during the song. This may signify her emotions with red, black, white and blue. Two dancers, either side of the singer. They are wearing blue body paint and bright gold dresses. Links to the genre of indie pop and the 60’s. The singer is dancing, by using robotic movements and dancing as a ritual. Lots of close ups on face to bring out her expressions. Themes: War conflict (Blue flag to suggest peace) Multicultural. Montage of shots when the music speeds up.
Stylistic Influences Our style to our video, is going to be related to the indie pop genre and it will link to concerts and festivals such as Woodstock, Reading Festival and Glastonbury. As a group, we want to capture the feel of the 60’s and the hippy stereotype. Our video will appeal to the fun people who attend festivals and concerts. Our influences are from films such as “The Runaways” “The Company of Wolves” and “Almost Famous.” These films relate to the past such as the 60’s and they incorporate the style that we want to use for our video.

Intended Audience Our intended audience, is going to be teenagers between the ages of 16-19. The genre of our song is targeted for festival goers and we would see our music video on the indie pop channel or the indie radio station which is located in London. We want our audience to be gripped by our video and also enjoy it.
The Visual Style Visually, we want our main singer to look like the pictures below. We have incorporated the style of pre-Raphaelite (Victorian) paintings as an example and we want the look of our video to look like this. Costume wise, we took the style of festivals such as Woodstock and clothes worn in the 60’s.

Mise en Scene-Locations The River-The running sequence Bridge-Memory Scene
Third Chorus-The Stage The Park

Farmer's Field My Wood
My Barn
Costumes: For costume, I was thinking Jeans with rips, a dull colour vest or top to create the 60’s and indie feel. I would like flowers in hair and this picture signifies some ideas we could use. Another influence for our costume was a band called Fleetwood Mac.
Narrative Structure In our video, we are going to incorporate lip syncing in the chorus and one verse. As a group we want to demonstrate and improve our editing skills when it comes to lip syncing. We are going to have a beginning, middle and an end which will be accompanied by a detailed and structured storyline. Here are some of our ideas. “ Happiness it hurts” signifies the woman she is talking about, was happy with someone but not anymore. A break up from a loved one. It will start with the girl waking up in a field surrounded by nature (horses and dogs) She pulls the picture of her ex-boyfriend out of her pocket then burns the picture. “ Train on a track”- shows suicidal tendencies. Also pulls knife out which already has blood on it. She wants to run away from the world. She does not want people to notice her. Hiding in woods, bushes e.t.c Using the season of Autumn with leaves and the weather changing. Running in different locations, speeds, weather Dirty each time she runs, She is ageing. 360 degree shot Memory of her boyfriend hurting her. “ The horses are coming so you better run”- Horses running in the field with her inside it. Horses may suggest a symbol.
Ancillary Task 1 Digipack: Photos of Florence Welch A list of her songs and when they were released. Lyrics of “Dog Days Are Over” Still images of our video in the background. The cover is going to be very colourful and appealing to the indented audience.
Ancillary Task 2 Magazine Advertisement: For our magazine advertisement, we have considered what magazine we are going to advertise our video in We were thinking The Independent Style Magazine which is also abbreviated to Indie Magazine. The magazine is a fashion magazine but in the past they have advertised music. The target audience for this magazine is for teenagers aged 16-19. We have to think about the Stylistic features of our production to fit in with our advertisement.
Team Roles Sam- I am going to be responsible for the location spotting and help out with the camera work. I am also going to be playing the role of the boyfriend. Megan-Megan is going to be responsible for the camerawork. Emily-Is going to be playing the character of the girl.
Conclusion Our Unique Selling Point of our production is that we are going to produce a video which will be very creative and unique. Our skills are going to be demonstrated by improving our editing, camera shots and angles and for me improving mise en scene. We want the video to have the genre of indie pop and be targeted to people who enjoy large festivals.
