La Ventana De Los Cielos Essay
La Ventana de Los Cielos is a nonprofit organization where they offer a variety of activities for
children and adolescents with special needs. The mission of this facility is to promote and improve
the physical and mental functions of those with special needs. This facility has 4 different stations
where the children rotate and are able to participate in each station. Every station focuses on a
specific function such as cognition, motor skills, sensory and social skills with the goal to
enhance each function. Services offered at La Ventana include horse based activities, zoo
interaction, aqua experiences, music and arts and crafts. The standard ratio of staff to patients
is one on one. Although there are times where there might not be enough volunteers or not
enough kids that attend on a particular day, a volunteer may be left without a child or may have
to work with 2 kids. I feel that the standards of ratio of one on one is adequate because it allows
the staff to give the child full attention and are able to get the most out of that child for that
particular day. The client population at La Ventana is mostly Spanish speaking coming from a
Latin culture, although there are some who are American and only speak English. Those who
attend this facility for services age range from 2 21 years old. The majority of the kids are young
under 10 years old. I have observed that there are more males than females that attend La Ventana.
The percentage of this ratio is 60%

The Security For The Networked Environment
The overall security for the networked environment is weak, and the team was able to move quickly
through the information system and gain system level access on most of the attached hosts, within
the scope of the penetration test. Had the organization been equipped with a firewall, the ability to
conduct the following test would have become a more difficult task. However, because packets can
move freely, the systems provide more data than they should. Secondly the team identified the
requirement to segment the network. In its current configuration, Appendix B, the organization is
easily exploitable. Coupled with a firewall, a segmented Local Area Network, and firewall to filter
the local area traffic, the organization becomes a more... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, we noticed telnet services is currently open, opening the possibility for an adversarial
agent to conduct replay attacks, using captured users names and passwords. Lastly, the team
rummaged through the exploited system, but found nothing of value. The .40 System Utilizing the
same exploits found on .60, the team managed to exploit .40. No different than the previous
system, the team managed to achieve system level access utilizing the getsystem command. On its
second exploit, the team again used the MS03_026 exploit, and again the system was
compromised. Nothing of value was recovered from the machine, and the passwords were not
cracked during the allotted amount of time. With most of its services closed, the .40 system only
presented these two potential avenues of approach. Unlike, the .60 machine, the team FTP service
was closed on the machine minimizing the client s overall footprint. System maintenance, and patch
management will reduce the issues found with these two systems. Unpatched systems remain open
potentially allowing attackers to exploit unnecessarily. Regarding the FTP service, the service is
always a potential threat. If possible the organization adopts SSH as the organization s transfer
protocol, due to its encryption capabilities. The team will later present an attack via SSH, but such
a vulnerability itself is easily mitigated. .20 Exploit Moving to the .20 host, the team was able

Security And Privacy For The Cloud Essay
Abstract: One of the main reasons to deliver security and privacy for the data in cloud computing
is, as it utilizes distributed resources in an unsecured location or environment to allocate their
services among people that belong to different organizations [1]. Enlargement in cloud adoption
rates will result in increased computing security problems [2]. The greatest terror of cloud clients
is that, most of the companies are not relaxed or comfortable accumulating their data and
applications on systems that exists outside of their own assumed data centers [3]. Increased
security of potential unwarranted approach and discovery to customer s personal information is
caused by relocating workloads to a distributed infrastructure. Data security and privacy protection
issues are relevant to both hardware and software in the cloud architecture. This study is to review
different security challenges and solutions for protecting data in the cloud and also aims at
enhancing the data security and privacy protection for the trustworthy cloud environment. In this
paper, we made a research analysis of an overview of security and privacy levels in secure
provisioning and composition, about the interfaces which are been provided to user throughout the
data storage and recovery and backup techniques which have been developed in the cloud p
province where the data of the clients can be backed up[4] Key Words: security, privacy, cloud

Over the past few years the economy in the United States has taken a downturn. It has been so
bad, that some businesses were not able to survive. However, Microsoft Corporation (Microsoft)
was not one of those companies. The fiscal strength of Microsoft played a large part in providing
the company with the ability and resources to survive the difficult financial markets (Microsoft

It is the goal to maximize the wealth of shareholders and Microsoft was able to use their excess
cash to repurchase stock that led to a large return. The repurchase of stock has taken place over
the last few years and has helped to increase the shareholders return. Another impact of costs
would be operating expenses. The cost of revenue has been rising over the last few years.
(Microsoft Corporation, 2009) When companies set out to repurchase shares of its own stock,
they are generally thinking that doing so will increase earnings per share rather than having a
direct effect on its sales. In other words, there is no direct relationship on a company s sales if
they decide to repurchase their stock. However, there are potential tax savings to shareholders.
Companies can do a few things when providing value to their shareholders, they can either pay a
dividend, which is a certain amount per share, per quarter, that puts money back into the investors
original investment, or they can decide to repurchase their own stock, boosting earnings per share
and the potential for their stock to grow exponentially because the number of shares outstanding
is reduced. In the case of Microsoft, they have announced the potential to repurchase up to $40
billion of their own stock by September 30, 2013 if they see the need to do so. They have also

Q3 * What types of communication are integrated within Sametime s digital environment? What
type of communication is missing? Does it make a difference? * Reciprocal it goes between
two or more people changing rolls. * Linguistic and extra linguistic People communicate through
key board (chatting) or using some familiar codes. * Private and public The communication
inside the company can be private when it occurs between two employees or public when it goes
to everyone in the organization. (In fact, it is not totally private because the conversation can be
followed for the database system.) * Formal The messages use a formal code according to the
organization policies. * Horizontal and vertical It can occur in a same range people or from boss to

What is missing here is the physical or interpersonal communication. It can make the difference
because when people talk they express a lot of feelings. The main advantage is that employees will

Methods and Myths of Traditional African Medicines and its Place in Modern Society
Traditional African medicines, and the spiritual healers that administer these medicines are an
important part of African society. For many centuries and even millenniums these healers with
there spiritual and naturalistic remedies have been responsible for taking care of the African
world as we know it. Traditional African medicines have been a greater help to all of society and
modern science, but still lie at the root of much controversy over its ability to be a valid healing
tool. Some doctor s and scientist believe that a possible placebo effect may be the root of what

Becoming a traditional healer requires an intense amount of SBA, an ancient Kemetic word
meaning teaching, learning, wisdom, and study, or overall deep thought(1). In fact, the process
of learning to become a healer consist of a very high level of learning; it is necessary that every
healer be taught properly, in order for him or her to be able to share his knowledge properly with
the forthcoming generation. For the aspiring healer, one must first become a good learner and
listener before one can become a good teacher; the two concepts of teaching and learning are
intertwined, one hand washes the other. Once this level of SBA is reached as a healer, the
whole world is seen in a different light so says Asa G. Hilliard. III. Sounds are heard that no one
can hear, visions that no one else can see are seen by the healer. After his training the healer
walks through the same world every person walks through. But he sees signs others just don t
see. He hears sounds others don t hear. The same tree that just stands there dumbly to everyone,
to the healer its leaves have something to say. The healer learns the meaning of the river s
sound, of the sounds of the forest animals. And when he needs the curing spirit from a plant , if his
eyes are well prepared , he may see from a great distance some small sign of a leaf that is ready

The Effect Of Temperature And Ph On The Enzyme Activity Of...
The Impact of Temperature and pH on the Enzyme Activity of Catechol Oxidase in Solanum
Tuberosum Samples Abstract The role of an enzyme is to catalyse reactions within a cell. The
enzyme present in a potato (Solanum Tuberosum) is catechol oxidase. In this experiment, the
enzyme activity was tested under different temperature and pH conditions. The objective of this
experiment was to determine the ideal conditions under which catechol oxidase catalyses
reactions. In order to do this, catechol was catalyzed by catechol oxidase into benzoquinone at
diverse temperatures and pH values. The enzyme was exposed to its new environment for 5
minutes before the absorbance of the catechol oxidase was measured at 420 nm using a
spectrophotometer. The use of a spectrophotometer was crucial for the collection of data in this
experiment. When exposed to hot and cold temperatures, some enzymes were found to denature
causing the activity to decrease. Similarly, when the pH was too high or low, then the catechol
oxidase enzyme experienced a significant decrease in activity. It can be concluded after completing
this experiment that the optimal pH for catechol oxidase is 7 and that the prime temperature is
20Вє C. Due to the fact that the catechol oxidase was only tested under several different
temperatures and pH values, it is always possible to get a more precise result by decreasing the
increments between the test values. However, our experiment was able to produce accurate results

Urinary Incontinence Essay
Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine, which means a person urinates when they
do not want to. (82 Testa) Urinary continence occurs when control over the urinary sphincter is
either lost or weakened. According to the Canadian Continence Foundation, incontinence affects
over 3.3 million Canadians including men and women of all ages. (http:/
/www.canadiancontinence.ca/EN/what is urinary incontinence.php) Urinary incontinenceis a much
more prevalent in the elderly population due to the combination of age related changes that affect
urinary wellness in older adults and risk factors. A study released in 2013 based on Canadian
Community Health Survey Healthy Aging reveals out of an estimated 512,000 older adults, about
12% of the population aged 65 or older reported urinary incontinence. Women were more likely
than men experience the condition (14% vs. 9%), and older adults 85 or older were more prone to
urinary incontinence. Urinary incontinence in older adults can negatively affect the quality of their

and to gradually expand the interval between urinating. The older adult hopes to regain voluntary

The main reason she claims to love Chile is because of the stories her grandfather would tell her
and her experience of travelling in the south (Allende 111). She explains about the war, and how
it impacted the whole country. She was able to travel and get to experience the differences. In
Chile she states how they do not talk the terms of racism rather they differ themselves according
to the class system (Allende 34). She also states how the upper class in Chile is relatively white.
No matter where one goes in the world it appears as the lighter the skin the more advantages you

Limbic Dopaminergic System
Limbic dopaminergic system, a part of brain reward circuit, is the main target of morphine like
drugs and all drugs of abuse (Wise and Bozarth 1984). Brain reward and motivation circuit begins
from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) at the top of brainstem that sends its dopaminergic
projections to the various regions of brainincluding nucleus accumbens (NAc), amygdala
(Ghalandari Shamami, Hassanpour Ezatti et al. 2011), hippocampus and prefrontal cortex

from other regions of the brains including GABAergic neurons of the NAc which send their
inhibitory projections to the VTA (Koob 1992).

Naguib Mahfouz Fountain and Tomb Essay
In the novel Fountain and Tomb by Naguib Mahfouz, the reader is thrown into a small alley in
Cairo, Egypt in the 1920s. The narrator is an adult reliving his childhood through many random,
interesting vignettes of his youth. We learn about many different aspects of Egyptian life from
political rebellion, to arranged marriages, to religious devotion, to gang warfare. We are led to
conclude that one of the major themes of the book is Truth. We come to question whether Truth is
something that alwaysneeds to be known. Will the Truth ultimately do more harm than good? Is
there ever a time when the Truth must be told? Are there times when it s better for the Truth to
never be known?

The story ends with the son supposedly helping his father pass away so he won t be forced to
return his fortune. This is a case where the father thought it was necessary for the Truth to come
out, but where did it leave his family? So we wonder, is the Truth always the best thing to be told?
Can it do more harm than good? In this case it did. Truth only brought about more pain, conflict,
and trouble than if it had not been told.
When our narrator is conversing with Anwar Gilel on the fountain steps, Gilel has made an
astounding realization. I ve just realized that I m a student among competing students in a school
which throws together students from antagonistic little lanes, in an alley in the middle of warring
alleys, that I m a creature among millions of creatures both seen and unseen on a ball of mud
awhirl amid a solar system over which I have no control, that this solar system is itself lost in
endless space ... It goes on and he asks the narrator whether the sun will come up tomorrow. I d
take bets on it, the lad answered. Gilel ends the argument by saying, Blessed are the ignorant, for
they are happy (Mahfouz, 115). Gilel also has realized that what people don t know is sometimes
better for them. It makes them feel better, safer, and happier. And we wonder which is more
important, knowing the Truth, or knowing enough of the Truth to keep us satisfied with life and
happy. In this story we notice that by

Analysis Of Francois Truffaut s The 400 Blows
The French New Wave was a style of film used during the 1950s through the mid 1960s by
French directors such as Francois Truffaut and Jean Luc Godard. During the French New Wave,
directors used an independent style of filmmaking called cinГ©ma vГ©ritГ© to portray a very
realistic outlook on the lives of people who were living in France during the era of the New
French Wave. In Francois Truffaut s The 400 Blows, we see right away in the opening scene a
prime example of cinГ©ma vГ©ritГ©. The opening scene depicts the view of a young,
mischievous child Antoine Doinel, looking out of a car window while driving through the
beautiful city of Paris, France. We see the elegant buildings along the side streets of Paris while

It took us through Antoine s school work, and showed beautiful scenes, one of my favorite being
where Antoine runs through the group of doves in the streets with a giant smile on his face. In my
opinion, the way that the film is pictured gives us as an audience an unbiased opinion on the film.
The reason I feel that it is the techniques used in the filming of the movie were what set me apart
from having a biased opinion on anything during the movie. Truffaut used natural, authentic
settings that truly made me feel like I was in France while watching this film, which in a way took
my mind off of even having a biased thought. In a way I somewhat related to Antoine because I
disagreed with my parents about many things as a child, not that Antoine just disagreed with his
parents because he did a lot more than that to make them upset (stealing money out of his mother s
wallet, lying directly to his mother s face, wiping his dirty hands on her curtains) but that personally
made me not judge him or anything that occurred during the film. Jean Luc Godard was another
director during the French New Wave who made his fame through a film called Breathless, which
was rather similar to The 400 Blows. This is because the film was written by Truffaut, but
directed by Godard. This film was much less realistic to me compared to The 400 Blows. I don t

What is free trade? Free trade is the international trade left to its natural course without tariffs,
quotas or any other restrictions. The first time arguments came around about if free trade was
fair was in 1839 42 during the opium wars in China. British drug dealers were exporting roughly
a ton of opium per day over from India. The people of China grew more and more aggrieved at
the damage it was doing to their people and societies, to prevent this the Chinese tried to close
their borders. The British were callous in suppressing this small revolt of the drug disagreeing
nationalist china. So today is free trade fair? I would say this could be answered in many different
ways depending on many factors. There are many advantages for many people and countries
however for one person to gain advantage it must come at a cost of someone having to deal with
the disadvantage. An example of this

there may be a requirement to hire a programmer that has experience in the database systems that

staff needing to be paid overtime, deadlines extended, or the possibility that software and

company chose to bid on this project for many reasons. The first reason is that over the last year
we have opened five new satellite locations that have taken off faster than previous openings,

Is Google Making Us Stupid Essay
Is Google Making Us Stupid?
How long is the Nile River? How do I take out a loan? Where do babies come from? Nowadays,
instead of the long searches after a trip to the library, creeping through the old books collecting dust
on our parent s shelves and even looking through an encyclopedia, instead we would find the
answers these answers through a quick Google search. Google, introduced to the public September
of 1997, is a commonly used search engine all over the internet. Google is roughly an amazing 40%
of the internet. From toddler to teen to senior citizen, we use Google as a crutch for our daily
information. But to say that Google is making us stupid is not necessarily right? Google more so is
making us dependant on fast paced information, and therefore diluting our sense of concentration
and our ability to receive and maintain that information.
Nicholas Carr, author of the article Is Google Making Us Stupid, wrote about his experience with
the search engine and how it s literally changing the way his thought process receives information.
Carr writes, I m not thinking the way I used to think... my concentration often starts to drift after
two or three pages. Google is a high speed search engine that spoils us with information on
whatever we want within a few clicks of a button. As of opposed to searching through hours of
books and encyclopedias, Google is a more time efficient source for knowledge. The problem with

Three Cups Of Tea By Greg Mortenson Essay
The astonishing, uplifting story of a real life Indiana Jones and his remarkable humanitarian
campaign in the Taliban s backyard is the introduction given to Greg Mortenson s readers before
even opening his book, Three Cups of Tea. This phrase slapped on the back cover of the millions
of books sold in America prepares readers to not only buy into Greg Mortenson s heroic story but
even support his cause. One song we hear too often is the one in which Africa serves as a
backdrop for white fantasies of conquest and heroism (Cole). The problem with Mr. Mortenson s
song is that it provides a single view of the religion of Islam. At first glance of Mortenson s book,

Mortenson also shows the underdevelopment of the Muslims through the women of Pakistan.
The women in the book are depicted as helpless and shameful. For example, when Greg was
captured by the violent Taliban he pleaded for release from the savage men by lying about his
wife giving birth to a son soon (Mortenson, 170). Mortenson essentializes the Muslim men as
underdeveloped and violent by portraying that they value males over females, believing they
would only let him go because he was having a son. The worst part about this example from
Mortenson was that it was a myth, according to John Krakauer s critique Three Cups of Deceit.
Greg staged the Another instance of Mortenson s essentialism was when Mortenson nursed
Rhokia back to health. The women and baby were shown as weak and no one but Greg, of
course, was able to help them. Mortenson shows the primitive nature of the people by describing
their helplessness. Mortenson said, For a Balti to let a foreign man, an infidel, have that kind of
intimate contact with your wife took an incredible leap of faith (Mortenson, 179). He once again
mentions the underdevelopment and male dominance by asking Rhokia s husband if it was okay to
remove her placenta, instead of directly asking her. Mortenson essentializes the women of Pakistan
and portrays them as if they are inferior to men according to

Delinquency Labels
Delinquency labels relates to economic statuses, racial differences and gender inequality. While
gender inequality highlights the differences in the prestige, power and status of men and women in
societies, they have an effect on crime patterns. Differences in gender significantly impact on
treatment of children by the juvenile system (Siegel Welsh, 2014). Although males and females
differ on personality traits, there is little evidence to show that they are impulsive than females. The
theory by Siegel and Welsh (2014) predicts no difference between crimeand self control despite
some researchers proposing otherwise based on the labeling theory. According to the labeling
theory, crime arises from societal reactions to behavior but social

Between Friday 15th April and Sunday 17th April I visited Zion National Park in Southern Utah.
Although the park s expansive 229 miles of open land differentiate it from the traditional museum, I
soon began to notice several similarities between the way in which the site had been managed by
the National Parks Service and the conventional format of museological spaces.
This first of these came to my attention while riding the free shuttle bus that runs between popular
locations within the park. During the fifteen minute journey from the Zion Canyon Visitor Centre
to the Angels Landing trailhead, a recorded audio tour guides visitors through their surroundings
using several different narrators, with each one focussing on a specific subject. The first of these
was a Native American man who spoke in vague terms about his people s millennia old claim to the
land while reinforcing positive stereotypes related to environmentalism and sustainability. While the
shuttle was introduced as a means of reducing traffic in the area and restor[ing] tranquillity to Zion

Criminal Profiling In Criminal Investigations
Criminal profiling is a technique used to identify the major personality and behavioral
characteristics of an individual based upon the characteristics of the crime they have committed
(Douglas et al. 1986,p.405). This technique has become increasingly popular and notorious
through its exaggerated use in television and other popular media. Particularly in the movie
Silence of the Lambs a thriller in which criminal profiling is used to apprehend a serial killer.
There is no doubt that due to its popularity in pop culture it has become increasingly present in real
life investigations. Despite this its quite apparent that due to a number of reasons it is rarely useful

In the study participants were required to read profiles and rate their accuracy, it found that the
investigators or individuals would pay more attention or give more weight to the hits in the
profile rather than the misses. This means the investigators were giving profiles greater value
than deserved, observed by the majority of officers rating the ambiguous profiles as useful
(Alison, Smith and Morgan, 2003). The participants selectively noting these hits and discarding
misses is most likely due to the inflated opinions of the expertise of the offender profiler (Alison,
Smith and Morgan, 2003). This is very significant because it reflects that investigators are likely to
concede that the expert opinion holds more weight than their own and instead of critically
evaluating these profiles, they are more likely to take the profiles statements as correct or accurate.
This in itself has the possibility to mislead investigations where offender profiling is used and
speaks as to why they should not be used as anything other than a last resort in

Karl Marx himself was an atheist and Marxism is an atheistic ideology, meaning that they take
distance from the belief that there is a God . He meant that in the country of reason the mere

foreign country that worshipped other Gods, they will provide proof of the non existence of your

for this is that one can clearly see that his critique of religion forms one piece of his overall
critique of society. In order to be able to understand his critique of religion,

Shell could have measured performance against:
Reduction in sales and IT staff time spent per client.
Quantity of service requests for invoice retrieval and order placements.
Assign different weighting to each request depending on how much time a sales agent will spend in
field to fulfil these requests.
Schader et al., (2004) also suggest ways of measuring how a website meets a customers needs:
The number of clicks required from website entry to making a purchase
Ease of navigation
Degree and frequency with which website content is changed
The use of personal data to customise website content
It was not until serious problems with customer usage of the web site were noted that Shell Limited
called in specialists, RareMethod, to conduct a user experience review of eStore.
Ultimately eBusiness, is still business (Brache and Webb, 2000), and the question is Is it
profitable? Currently eStore does not deliver the hoped for cost savings to the company through its
deployment of new self serve technology to Shell Canada s agricultural customers.

The Failure Of The American Prison System
TheFailure of the American Prison System The subject of prison evokes fearful and violent images
seen in movies or on television; outdated clichГ©s consisting of men eating stale bread and
drinking dirty water that are intended to repulse people and deter them from committing crimes and
ending up in such a position. Unfortunately, the reality of the American prisonsystem is just as
troubling as the dated stereotypes surrounding it. Despite its success in keeping dangerous
offenders off the streets, the modern prison system fails in fulfilling its original design of restoring
criminals to being productive members of society. It has proven to be an inefficient and ineffective
system by focusing on punishment over rehabilitation, leading to issues such as overcrowding,
wasting taxpayers money and a high recidivismrate. As children, most people learn obedience
through punishment. When we do something wrong one or several privileges are taken away by
our parents. Depending on the severity of a mistake, such punishment may last for a very short time
or in some cases it may even be permanent. Many parents inflict the common punishment of not
allowing their children to watch television for a certain amount of time. Such disciplinary methods
often prove to be positive learning experiences that teach children right from wrong and instill them
with values that prevent them from doing it again. Similarly, the United States prison system was

The Is The Ethical Foundation Of Any Form Of Professional...
A principle put to paper over 2,000 years ago and credited to Hippocrates; nonmaleficence has
become the ethical foundation of any form of professional treatment in the modern age (Edelstein,
1943). Although boundary crossing has risks I believe the capacity to do harm in this case hinges
on the competence of the counselor. As I read I came to the conclusion intentional self disclosure is
an art that must be mastered. The well being of the client is the primary consideration, however,
there are also considerations of timing, the developmental need of the client, and the counselor s
ability to craft a disclosure that leaves no room to open additional doors. Although it may be
counterintuitive disclosing one s orientation to someone who feels alone in their sexuality does
have possible negative consequences. An emotionally vulnerable client who is struggling with
being gay may develop an attraction to a therapist who shares their orientation and is the same sex.
If the counselor is not attuned to this development the client could confuse the counselor s
disclosure with their availability or receptiveness to the attraction. A therapist who discloses but is
not aware of an attraction that is developing, meaning it goes unprocessed, has tremendous potential
to do damage in the context of therapy. Additionally, if the therapist is taken by surprise and rejects
the advances of a vulnerable client without care it could have unintentional detrimental effects on
the counselor client

Immigration Into Canada
Immigration Into Canada
Abstract This paper is concerned with the recent wave of Hong Kong immigrants into Vancouver.
The stage is set for this discussion by first explaining some background behind Canadian
immigration policy and then discussing the history of
Chinese immigrants in Vancouver. From these discussions we are informed that
Canadian immigration policy was historically ethnocentric and only began to change in the late
1960s. It was at this point that we see a more multicultural group of immigrants into our nation. The
history of Chinese immigration in
Vancouver, and for that matter, Canadais not positive one. The experiences and prejudices which

Throughout the 20th Century the Canadian government has set targets for the number of
immigrant entries based upon economic criteria. Periods of encouragement have included the early
decades of this century along with the reconstruction era of Post World War II. The 30s, 40s and the
recession of the early 80s have been periods during which the national government has discouraged
immigration. At times, economic concerns have given way to humanitarian ones such as during the
Soviet invasions of Hungary and Czechoslovakia, and during the Vietnamese refugee crisis of the
70s. Generally, however, Canadian immigration targets have reflected the rate of economic
expansion and employment. An exception to this rule was during the latter part of the 1980s.
Worry over the declining fertility rate and our ageing population led the federal government to raise
its annual targets despite high unemployment. Most recently, under economic pressures, the most
recent Liberal government once again lowered the immigration level.
The Geography of Immigration There have also been attempts at controlling the geography of
immigrant settlement. The Federal government stated that one of the primary goals of immigration
is to, foster the development of a strong and viable economy and the prosperity of all regions in
Canada. Immigration in our country has been seen as a means of promoting economic development
in less prosperous regions, as well as supporting heartland areas. While the

The Emergence Of Cinematic Time
Tim Hodge
In Mary Ann Doane s The Emergence of Cinematic Time , she opens with an explanation of the
historical development of time as we now understand it. I believe that is the most important aspect
of the text. She discusses a shift in the fundamental understanding of the existence of time
concurrent with the development of the concept of capitalism. This not only shapes our
understanding of the image but of a fundamental understanding of our existence in the
contemporary world. Though that may seem a tad melodramatic, I challenge you to come up with
one aspect of your life and your art that is not affected by your temporal experience. It is difficult
to conceive of one aspect of our lives and our art that is not affected by temporal experience. Aside
from being late for an appointment, the effect of time is most prevalent when viewing other s
moving images.
Doane argues that the creation of capitalistic time grew out of the proliferation of pocket watches
and trains. That time becomes uniform, homogenous, irreversible and divisible into verifiable
units. (Doane 6) These measured units of time end up having their effect most felt by people. As
simplistic as that statement may be that is what productivity and efficiency come down to, the
experience of people. The struggle for productivity and efficiency profoundly affect the experience
of people. The positive consequences of this are the developments that we see in the world around
us such as global travel, modern

Edgar Allen Poe s Annabel Lee
Happily N Ever After Annabel Lee was the last complete poem of Edgar Allan Poe, published
sometime after his mysterious death in 1849. The poem, much like many of his other works, is
about a young woman named Annabel Lee, with whom the speaker is in love with and who
tragically dies. Poe had a lot of women die in his life, and though it is unclear who the poem is
about, it has been interpreted to be about his wife Virginia, who had died young. He places
blame on the angels for Annabel s death, who appear to be his foes instead of the friendly beings
they are commonly portrayed as. The speaker proclaims his undying love for Annabel, who is
separated from him by several different forces, by using imagery, symbolism, and dreamlike diction.

The opening line, It was many and many a year ago (1), mirrors the Once upon a time line many
fairytales employ. The phrase In a kingdom by the sea (2) is repeated four times in the poem; the
word kingdom conjures an image of a castle, a common backdrop for fairytales. This image is
upheld throughout the poem by the repetition of this phrase. Poe s choice of diction places the
story in a romantic setting, intensifying the love they have for each other, which is much like the
love that princes and princesses have for each other in those stories. Their love reflects the true
love that has become a staple of fairytales, and it is so strong that the speaker still harbors these
feelings toward her. The fairyland setting serves to reinforce the ardent love these two have, making

Personal Narrative A Preventable Death
He looks at his watch and realizes that he has to leave now before he gets yelled at due to
missing the 12:00 curfew. Upon my cousin Sean s arrival home, he begged his mom for an
extended curfew, after all he was the star of the 19991 homecoming football game at Royalton high
school, he should have been able to stay out later. After losing this fightwith rather stubborn mom,
and her giving him a stern Sean I am not going over this again, it is late and I would like you to

When my cousin Jaime and I got in the car, and saw the tears in my mom s eyes, I asked her,
mom, what s wrong?
Your cousin Sean was killed in a car accident at about 4:30 this morning, she replied.
Jaime and I both searched for words and all we could do is look at my mom with our eyes filled
with both tears and disbelief, as we both said, No, Sean can t be dead, he is too cool to die.
Sean was my favorite cousin, he was always the life of the party, and after finding out this news
and getting over the initial shock, I asked my mom whether or not he had been drinking, she wasn
t sure but Anne and Allen, Sean s parents, never told her if he was or not. I never wanted to accept
the fact that my favorite cousin could have made such a grave mistake. It was a cruel reality the
day that they told me the truth, but that day, the news did not come from family. That is, I guess,
what made it even worse.
I was sitting in my freshmen english class, when my teacher had told us that we had a new
student teacher, he then turned the class over to her, and let her do her own introduction. As she
was speaking, I didn t hear a word that she had said, because I was trying to figure out how I had
known her. It wasn t until she had told the class that I graduated from Royalton highschool in 91, .
That is when it hit me. I had seen her at

However because of the drop in value of the Malaysian ringgit, foreign customers would be able to
afford to spend more money on travelling. Low cost carriers may also take advantage of the
cheaper oil prices and lower their airfare to attract more customers, both local and international.
Technological Change
Airbus claimed that its latest aircraft, A330neo had been upgraded and it would be as fuel
efficient as Boeing s new 787 Dreamliner (Business Insider, 2014). This is an important
advancement in technology because 33% of the operating costs of airlines was spent on fuel (Air
Transport Action Group, 2014).
An advance in aircraft technology that reduced fuel consumption reduced the total operating costs
of the plane. The more fuel efficient an aircraft was, the bigger the distance travelled by that
particular aircraft with a set amount of fuel. This allowed an airline to expand its network and
consider routes that they were unable to consider before. However technology evolved quickly
and if a better aircraft is launched soon after an airline has bought the previous version, the
previous version would most probably become obsolete in a short period of time. In addition to
that, there was a high possibility that the start up cost of buying new aircrafts could be a cost
burden in the short term.

The monsters that rose from the dead, they are nothing compared to the ones we carry in our
hearts (Brooks 252). Max Brooks, the author of the book World War Z breaks down that there is
a possibility for humans to become zombies. In World War Z and Wastelands: The End of the
World as We Know It both apocalyptic stories set the setting in extreme and lonely places. The
characters in the novels educate themselves to survive the world during an apocalypse. People are
constantly running, crying, fighting, or shooting. The authors point out that if we take a closer look
there are many possibilities to which an apocalypse could happen, however, the origin of the
outbreak is unknown. Zombies are just metaphors used in novels, games, ... Show more content on

The author, Dale Bailey in The End of the World as We Know It, points out since the 1991 Persian
Gulf War in which some 23,000 people died, most of them Iraqi conscripts killed by American
bombs military style Humvees have been especially coveted (Bailey 292). As the short story
goes along about Wyndham s life, the author connects it to the real world. Bailey inserted
various reflections on the many types of end of the world stories. Likewise, the interviewer in
World War Z travels the world and covers different event around the world. Each event relates to
the modern society. There comes a point when you have to realize that the sum of all your
blood, sweat, and tears will ultimately amount to zero (Brook 48). Max Brook s point is not
only people would die for zombies, people would die from the lack of clean water supply. Flint,
Michigan s water contamination crisis became a federal emergency and required aid from the
National Guard. North American millennials (27.3%) are most concerned by the global lack of
food and water, followed by 21.5% of millennials in Europe and 11% in both Latin America/the
Caribbean and Sub Saharan Africa. Many people do not have access to clean safe water which
results in infections and death from hunger and thirst. (Shelson

Gladiatorial Contest In Rome Essay
Gladiatorial Contest in Rome
Rome was a warrior state. Since the state was a great fighting state in their time, the wars sort of

The gladiatorial contests began at the reign of their first emperor Augustus to pay tribute to their
warrior traditions. The Romans built artificial battlefields within amphitheaters in cities and towns

of Mercury. The people who dragged away the dead bodies were dressed as Pluto, the god of the

the memory of the dead.
At the end of the last century B.C., politics became involved in the gladiatorial games, and the
games were viewed more as entertainment than religious and commemorative ceremonies. The
contests were public performances held in the social center of the city, the Forum. The public
started participating in the games due to the splendour of the shows and by the distribution of
meat, and by betting, added more respect to the entire family and the dead. The funerals put on by
aristocrats in the Republic were political acts because if their popularity with citizen electors. The
fancy shows were fueled by competition between aristocrats who wanted to please, excite, and
increase their number of supporters.
In 42 B.C., gladiatorial fights were substituted for chariot races in official games for the first time.
It was then when officers of the state started producing the

Explain What Caused Alexander The Great To Be Successful...
What caused Alexander the Great to be successful against Darius? Throughout history Alexander
the Great has been remembered for being a superb military commander. Alexander always led his
Army from the front, forming the point of the spearhead to engage the enemy. This not only
inspired his men, but gave them courage during battle. Darius, on the other hand, was the exact
opposite. He chose to lead from behind while mounted on chariot and surrounded by body guards
(Wasson, 2011). These two military commanders met in battle in 333 BC at Issus. Alexander s
Army was quite smaller than Darius s, but the location of the battle would work to Alexander s
advantage. Though outnumbered, the battlefield was located between the sea and a mountain
range. Darius s larger Army could not out flank Alexander s Army to achieve a decisive victory.

Alexander captured the royal family and through compassion, treated them with kindness and
respect. Shortly thereafter, Alexander announced his claim to the thrown of Persia and
proclaimed himself to be King of Asia (Wasson, 2011). This was not the first time that Darius
had retreated from a battle with Alexander. This would, however, be the culminating event that
would seal his fate. Bessus had Darius stabbed and left for dead near modern day Shahrud.
Alexander recovered his body, and being the compassionate leader that he was had Darius s body
buried with royal honors in the tombs of Persepolis (Walbank, 2017). Alexander died ten years
later on July 13th, 323 B.C. Though not by injury, or in battle, but from what appeared to be
overconsumption. After a prolonged banquet and drinking bought Alexander fell ill. Whether an
intentional poisoning ultimately took the Kings life is still a subject of debate. His body was
returned to Alexandria and he received divine honors in both Egypt and Greece (Walbank,

One of the most impactful inventions was the development of the telegram. The first telegram was
sent in May 24th, 1844 from the U.S. Capital to Baltimore. This telegram was sent by Samuel F.B.
Morse and the message said What hath God wrought? The significance of the telegraph is that it
completely branches out new possibilities for communication. For the most part, there was only the
existence of local businesses because distance was a problem. However, the telegraph would allow
for larger businesses to strive because of the now long distance communication. This alone greatly
progresses the industrial industry because products could now be ordered from long distances and
communications could be made between buildings farther away under the same company. This
gave rise to the interstate companies that years later would evolve into international companies. In
addition to this, the telegram gave the U.S. an advantage in combat that other countries did not yet
have access to. This made communication fast and efficient in the heat of battle, which made the
U.S. a more powerful player. Moreover, the invention of the telegraph helped lean the American

Mental Cases And Disabled Essay
The price the survivors of war pay is through the loss of their own bodies and minds. In Wilfred
Owen s poems Mental Cases, and Disabled, the aftermath the devastating effect war has on the
people who participate in it is shown through the pitying voice of an outside speaker. Mental
Cases, focuses on the psychological trauma, showing soldiers who suffer from PTSD and shell
shock. Disabled, focuses on the physical trauma of the soldiers by describing one soldier who has
lost his legs and is permanently disfigured, rendering him unable to enjoy the rest of his life. The
psychological trauma of war portrayed in Mental Cases, is conveyed through the chilling, almost

proper age to enlist in the army. No competent human being would purposely throw away their
knees or even pour their own blood down shell holes. Yet the final irony of the poem is that when
the soldier volunteered he purposely gave up all these things. The price of admission into the war

  • 2. La Ventana De Los Cielos Essay La Ventana de Los Cielos is a nonprofit organization where they offer a variety of activities for children and adolescents with special needs. The mission of this facility is to promote and improve the physical and mental functions of those with special needs. This facility has 4 different stations where the children rotate and are able to participate in each station. Every station focuses on a specific function such as cognition, motor skills, sensory and social skills with the goal to enhance each function. Services offered at La Ventana include horse based activities, zoo interaction, aqua experiences, music and arts and crafts. The standard ratio of staff to patients is one on one. Although there are times where there might not be enough volunteers or not enough kids that attend on a particular day, a volunteer may be left without a child or may have to work with 2 kids. I feel that the standards of ratio of one on one is adequate because it allows the staff to give the child full attention and are able to get the most out of that child for that particular day. The client population at La Ventana is mostly Spanish speaking coming from a Latin culture, although there are some who are American and only speak English. Those who attend this facility for services age range from 2 21 years old. The majority of the kids are young under 10 years old. • 4. Security And Privacy For The Cloud Essay Abstract: One of the main reasons to deliver security and privacy for the data in cloud computing is, as it utilizes distributed resources in an unsecured location or environment to allocate their services among people that belong to different organizations [1]. Enlargement in cloud adoption rates will result in increased computing security problems [2]. The greatest terror of cloud clients is that, most of the companies are not relaxed or comfortable accumulating their data and applications on systems that exists outside of their own assumed data centers [3]. Increased security of potential unwarranted approach and discovery to customer s personal information is caused by relocating workloads to a distributed infrastructure. Data security and privacy protection issues are relevant to both hardware and software in the cloud architecture. This study is to review different security challenges and solutions for protecting data in the cloud and also aims at enhancing the data security and privacy protection for the trustworthy cloud environment. In this paper, we made a research analysis of an overview of security and privacy levels in secure provisioning and composition, about the interfaces which are been provided to user throughout the data storage and recovery and backup techniques which have been developed in the cloud p province where the data of the clients can be backed up[4] Key Words: security, privacy, cloud computing, threats, data integrity. The cost of revenue has been rising over the last few years. (Microsoft Corporation, 2009) When companies set out to repurchase shares of its own stock, they are generally thinking that doing so will increase earnings per share rather than having a direct effect on its sales. In other words, there is no direct relationship on a company s sales if they decide to repurchase their stock. However, there are potential tax savings to shareholders. Companies can do a few things when providing value to their shareholders, they can either pay a dividend, which is a certain amount per share, per quarter, that puts money back into the investors original investment, or they can decide to repurchase their own stock, boosting earnings per share and the potential for their stock to grow exponentially because the number of shares outstanding is reduced. The Impact of Temperature and pH on the Enzyme Activity of Catechol Oxidase in Solanum Tuberosum Samples Abstract The role of an enzyme is to catalyse reactions within a cell. The enzyme present in a potato (Solanum Tuberosum) is catechol oxidase. In this experiment, the enzyme activity was tested under different temperature and pH conditions. The objective of this experiment was to determine the ideal conditions under which catechol oxidase catalyses reactions. In order to do this, catechol was catalyzed by catechol oxidase into benzoquinone at diverse temperatures and pH values. The enzyme was exposed to its new environment for 5 minutes before the absorbance of the catechol oxidase was measured at 420 nm using a spectrophotometer. The use of a spectrophotometer was crucial for the collection of data in this experiment. When exposed to hot and cold temperatures, some enzymes were found to denature causing the activity to decrease. Similarly, when the pH was too high or low, then the catechol oxidase enzyme experienced a significant decrease in activity. It can be concluded after completing this experiment that the optimal pH for catechol oxidase is 7 and that the prime temperature is 20Вє C. Due to the fact that the catechol oxidase was only tested under several different temperatures and pH values, it is always possible to get a more precise result by decreasing the increments between the test values. The reason I feel that it is the techniques used in the filming of the movie were what set me apart from having a biased opinion on anything during the movie. Truffaut used natural, authentic settings that truly made me feel like I was in France while watching this film, which in a way took my mind off of even having a biased thought. In a way I somewhat related to Antoine because I disagreed with my parents about many things as a child, not that Antoine just disagreed with his parents because he did a lot more than that to make them upset (stealing money out of his mother s wallet, lying directly to his mother s face, wiping his dirty hands on her curtains) but that personally made me not judge him or anything that occurred during the film. Jean Luc Godard was another director during the French New Wave who made his fame through a film called Breathless, which was rather similar to The 400 Blows. Google, introduced to the public September of 1997, is a commonly used search engine all over the internet. Google is roughly an amazing 40% of the internet. From toddler to teen to senior citizen, we use Google as a crutch for our daily information. But to say that Google is making us stupid is not necessarily right? Google more so is making us dependant on fast paced information, and therefore diluting our sense of concentration and our ability to receive and maintain that information. Nicholas Carr, author of the article Is Google Making Us Stupid, wrote about his experience with the search engine and how it s literally changing the way his thought process receives information. Carr writes, I m not thinking the way I used to think... my concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages. Google is a high speed search engine that spoils us with information on whatever we want within a few clicks of a button. As of opposed to searching through hours of books and encyclopedias, Google is a more time efficient source for knowledge. The problem with this instrument isn t that it s making us stupid per ... Three Cups Of Tea By Greg Mortenson Essay The astonishing, uplifting story of a real life Indiana Jones and his remarkable humanitarian campaign in the Taliban s backyard is the introduction given to Greg Mortenson s readers before even opening his book, Three Cups of Tea. This phrase slapped on the back cover of the millions of books sold in America prepares readers to not only buy into Greg Mortenson s heroic story but even support his cause. One song we hear too often is the one in which Africa serves as a backdrop for white fantasies of conquest and heroism (Cole). The women in the book are depicted as helpless and shameful. For example, when Greg was captured by the violent Taliban he pleaded for release from the savage men by lying about his wife giving birth to a son soon (Mortenson, 170). Mortenson essentializes the Muslim men as underdeveloped and violent by portraying that they value males over females, believing they would only let him go because he was having a son. The worst part about this example from Mortenson was that it was a myth, according to John Krakauer s critique Three Cups of Deceit. Greg staged the Another instance of Mortenson s essentialism was when Mortenson nursed Rhokia back to health. The women and baby were shown as weak and no one but Greg, of course, was able to help them. Mortenson shows the primitive nature of the people by describing their helplessness. Mortenson said, For a Balti to let a foreign man, an infidel, have that kind of intimate contact with your wife took an incredible leap of faith (Mortenson, 179). This first of these came to my attention while riding the free shuttle bus that runs between popular locations within the park. During the fifteen minute journey from the Zion Canyon Visitor Centre to the Angels Landing trailhead, a recorded audio tour guides visitors through their surroundings using several different narrators, with each one focussing on a specific subject. This means the investigators were giving profiles greater value than deserved, observed by the majority of officers rating the ambiguous profiles as useful (Alison, Smith and Morgan, 2003). The participants selectively noting these hits and discarding misses is most likely due to the inflated opinions of the expertise of the offender profiler (Alison, Smith and Morgan, 2003). This is very significant because it reflects that investigators are likely to concede that the expert opinion holds more weight than their own and instead of critically evaluating these profiles, they are more likely to take the profiles statements as correct or accurate. Unfortunately, the reality of the American prisonsystem is just as troubling as the dated stereotypes surrounding it. Despite its success in keeping dangerous offenders off the streets, the modern prison system fails in fulfilling its original design of restoring criminals to being productive members of society. It has proven to be an inefficient and ineffective system by focusing on punishment over rehabilitation, leading to issues such as overcrowding, wasting taxpayers money and a high recidivismrate. As children, most people learn obedience through punishment. When we do something wrong one or several privileges are taken away by our parents. Depending on the severity of a mistake, such punishment may last for a very short time or in some cases it may even be permanent. Many parents inflict the common punishment of not allowing their children to watch television for a certain amount of time. A principle put to paper over 2,000 years ago and credited to Hippocrates; nonmaleficence has become the ethical foundation of any form of professional treatment in the modern age (Edelstein, 1943). Although boundary crossing has risks I believe the capacity to do harm in this case hinges on the competence of the counselor. As I read I came to the conclusion intentional self disclosure is an art that must be mastered. The well being of the client is the primary consideration, however, there are also considerations of timing, the developmental need of the client, and the counselor s ability to craft a disclosure that leaves no room to open additional doors. Although it may be counterintuitive disclosing one s orientation to someone who feels alone in their sexuality does have possible negative consequences. An emotionally vulnerable client who is struggling with being gay may develop an attraction to a therapist who shares their orientation and is the same sex. If the counselor is not attuned to this development the client could confuse the counselor s disclosure with their availability or receptiveness to the attraction. A therapist who discloses but is not aware of an attraction that is developing, meaning it goes unprocessed, has tremendous potential to do damage in the context of therapy. Additionally, if the therapist is taken by surprise and rejects the advances of a vulnerable client without care it could have unintentional detrimental effects on the counselor client ... Throughout the 20th Century the Canadian government has set targets for the number of immigrant entries based upon economic criteria. Periods of encouragement have included the early decades of this century along with the reconstruction era of Post World War II. The 30s, 40s and the recession of the early 80s have been periods during which the national government has discouraged immigration. At times, economic concerns have given way to humanitarian ones such as during the Soviet invasions of Hungary and Czechoslovakia, and during the Vietnamese refugee crisis of the 70s. Generally, however, Canadian immigration targets have reflected the rate of economic expansion and employment. An exception to this rule was during the latter part of the 1980s. Worry over the declining fertility rate and our ageing population led the federal government to raise its annual targets despite high unemployment. Most recently, under economic pressures, the most recent Liberal government once again lowered the immigration level. The Federal government stated that one of the primary goals of immigration is to, foster the development of a strong and viable economy and the prosperity of all regions in Canada. • 38. The Emergence Of Cinematic Time Tim Hodge In Mary Ann Doane s The Emergence of Cinematic Time , she opens with an explanation of the historical development of time as we now understand it. I believe that is the most important aspect of the text. She discusses a shift in the fundamental understanding of the existence of time concurrent with the development of the concept of capitalism. This not only shapes our understanding of the image but of a fundamental understanding of our existence in the contemporary world. Though that may seem a tad melodramatic, I challenge you to come up with one aspect of your life and your art that is not affected by your temporal experience. It is difficult to conceive of one aspect of our lives and our art that is not affected by temporal experience. Aside from being late for an appointment, the effect of time is most prevalent when viewing other s moving images. Doane argues that the creation of capitalistic time grew out of the proliferation of pocket watches and trains. That time becomes uniform, homogenous, irreversible and divisible into verifiable units. (Doane 6) These measured units of time end up having their effect most felt by people. As simplistic as that statement may be that is what productivity and efficiency come down to, the experience of people. The poem, much like many of his other works, is about a young woman named Annabel Lee, with whom the speaker is in love with and who tragically dies. Poe had a lot of women die in his life, and though it is unclear who the poem is about, it has been interpreted to be about his wife Virginia, who had died young. Technological Change Airbus claimed that its latest aircraft, A330neo had been upgraded and it would be as fuel efficient as Boeing s new 787 Dreamliner (Business Insider, 2014). This is an important advancement in technology because 33% of the operating costs of airlines was spent on fuel (Air Transport Action Group, 2014). An advance in aircraft technology that reduced fuel consumption reduced the total operating costs of the plane. The more fuel efficient an aircraft was, the bigger the distance travelled by that particular aircraft with a set amount of fuel. In addition to that, there was a high possibility that the start up cost of buying new aircrafts could be a cost burden in the short term.
