This document provides an introduction to a survey of Philippine folk epics. It outlines the contents and objectives of the survey, which are to review materials on long heroic narratives found in the Philippines, determine their folk origins and epic characteristics, discover common features, indicate their number and availability, and provide summaries. It notes that only a few folk epics were recorded during the Spanish period, and that more intensive study began in the early 20th century, focused on remaining pagan groups. The survey aims to advance understanding of these oral traditions.
