This document introduces a web-based intelligent training system to assist workers in drafting business letters. The system is based on constructivism theory and self-directed learning. It uses a case-based reasoning approach to suggest rhetorical business letters from a case library that users can adapt to their specific contexts. The system aims to help users effectively transfer knowledge and acquire skills for business letter writing without direct instruction.

The job search approach has drawbacks since the job seeker needs to search a job offers in each recruitment platform, manage their accounts, and apply for the relevant job vacancies, which wastes considerable time and effort. The contribution of this research work is the construction of a recommendation system based on the job offers extracted from the web and on the e-portfolios of job seekers. After the extraction of the data, natural language processing is applied to structured data and is ready for filtering and analysis. The proposed system is a content-based system, it measures the degree of correspondence between the attributes of the e-portfolio with those of each job offer of the same list of competence specialties using the Euclidean distance, the result is classified with a decreasing way to display the most relevant to the least relevant job offers

Although of the semantic web technologies utilization in the learning development field is a new research area, some authors have already proposed their idea of how an effective that operate. Specifically, from analysis of the literature in the field, we have identified three different types of existing applications that actually employ these technologies to support learning. These applications aim at: Enhancing the learning objects reusability by linking them to an ontological description of the domain, or, more generally, describe relevant dimension of the learning process in an ontology, then; providing a comprehensive authoring system to retrieve and organize web material into a learning course, and constructing advanced strategies to present annotated resources to the user, in the form of browsing facilities, narrative generation and final rendering of a course. On difference with the approaches cited above, here we propose an approach that is modeled on narrative studies and on their transposition in the digital world. In the rest of the paper, we present the theoretical basis that inspires this approach, and show some examples that are guiding our implementation and testing of these ideas within e-learning. By emerging the idea of the ontologies are recognized as the most important component in achieving semantic interoperability of e-learning resources. The benefits of their use have already been recognized in the learning technology community. In order to better define different aspects of ontology applications in e-learning, researchers have given several classifications of ontologies. We refer to a general one given in that differentiates between three dimensions ontologies can describe: content, context, and structure. Most of the present research has been dedicated to the first group of ontologies. A well-known example of such an ontology is based on the ACM Computer Classification System (ACM CCS) and defined by Resource Description Framework Schema (RDFS). It’s used in the MOODLE to classify learning objects with a goal to improve searching. The chapter will cover the terms of the semantic web and e-learning systems design and management in e-learning (MOODLE) and some of studies depend on e-learning and semantic web, thus the tools will be used in this paper, and lastly we shall discuss the expected contribution. The special attention will be putted on the above topics.
The e-learning contained many educational resources are generally used in learning systems like Moodle, It’s free open source software packages designed and flexible platform to create Learning Objects (LOs) and users’ accounts. The author demonstrates how to use semantic web technologies to improve online learning environments and bridge the gap between learners and LOs. The ontological construction presented here helps formalize LOs context as a complex interplay of different learning-related elements and shows how we can use semantic annotation to interrelate diverse between learner and LOs. On top of this construction, the author implemented several feedback channels for educators to improve the delivery of future Web-based learning. The particular aim of this paper was to provide a solution based in the Moodle Platform. The main idea behind the approach presented here is that ontology which can not only be useful as a learning instrument but it can also be employed to assess students’ skills. For it, each student is prompted to express his/her beliefs by building own discipline-related ontology through an application displayed in the interface of Moodle. This paper presents the ontology for an e-Learning System, which arranges metadata, and defines the relationships of metadata, which are about learning objects; belong to academic courses and user profiles. This ontology has been incorporated as a critical part of the proposed architecture. By this ontology, effective retrieval of learning content, customizing Learning Management System (LMS) is expected. Metadata used in this paper are based on current metadata standards. This ontology specified in human and machine-readable formats. In implementing it, several APIs were defined to manage the ontology. They were introduced into a typical LMS such as Moodle. Proposed ontology maps user preferences with learning content to satisfy learner requirements. These learning objects are presented to the learner based on ontological relationships. Hence it increases the usability and customizes the LMS. In conclusion, ontologies have a range of potential benefits and applications in further and higher education, including the sharing of information across e-learning systems, providing frameworks for learning object reuse, and enabling information between learner and system parts.

This paper presents recent research into methods used in Australian Indigenous Knowledge sharing and looks at how these can support the creation of suitable collaborative envi- ronments for timely organisational learning. The protocols and practices as used today and in the past by Indigenous communities are presented and discussed in relation to their relevance to a personalised system of knowledge sharing in modern organisational cultures. This research focuses on user models, knowledge acquisition and integration of data for constructivist learning in a networked repository of or- ganisational knowledge. The data collected in the repository is searched to provide collections of up-to-date and relevant material for training in a work environment. The aim is to improve knowledge collection and sharing in a team envi- ronment. This knowledge can then be collated into a story or workflow that represents the present knowledge in the organisation.

Communication plays an important role to deliver the correct information. However, the communication became challenging especially for agile software teams, which are in geographical distributed. The problem arise when there are exchanging information using unstructured communication platform, misunderstanding on the information communicated and lack of documentation. The aim of this study is to propose a text classification technique for requirements identification in text messages. In this study, we adopted the cascade and cluster classification concept of Carotene that relies on the hash tag function. It classifies the text messages into requirements types instead of job title. This technique called as high-level carotene (HLC) technique that embedded into the tool to identify the functional requirement and non-functional requirements. The result shows that most of criterias evaluated have achieved more than 85% of effectiveness in identifying both of requirement in text messaging by using this technique.

Collaborative communities are complex and rapidly evolving socio-technical systems. The design of these systems includes the communal specification of communication and information requirements, as well as the selection, configuration, and linking of the software tools that best satisfy these requirements. Supporting the effective and efficient community-driven design of such complex and dynamic systems is not trivial.
To represent and reason about the system design specifications we use conceptual graph theory. We do so because the knowledge representation language of choice must be rich enough to allow the efficient expression of complex definitions. Also, since design specifications derive from complex real world domains and community members themselves are actively involved in specification processes, a close mapping of knowledge definitions to natural language expressions and vice versa is useful. Finally, the representation language must be sufficiently formal and constrained for powerful knowledge operations to
be constructed. Conceptual graph theory has all of these properties.
We explore how conceptual graphs can be used to:
1. model the core elements of such socio-technical systems and their design processes.
2. specify communication and information requirements and match these with social software functionalities.
We illustrate these design processes with examples from a realistic scenario on building a knowledge-driven topic community on climate change.

The world is witnessing the electronic revolution in many fields of life such as health, education,
government and commerce. E-learning is considered one of the hot topics in the e-revolution as it brings
with it rapid change and greater opportunities to increase learning ability in colleges and schools. The
fields of Learning Management Systems (LMS) and Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS) are
full of open source and commercial products, however LCMS systems in general inherit the drawbacks of
information system such as weakness in user expected information retrieval and semantic modelling and
searching of contents & courses. In this paper, we propose a new prototype of LCMS that uses the
Semantic Web technologies and Ontology Reasoner with logical rules, as an inference engine to satisfy the
constraints and criteria specified by a user, and retrieves relevant content from the domain ontology in an
organized fashion. This enables construction of a user-specific course, by semantic querying for topics of
interest. We present the development of an Ontology-oriented Inference-based Learning Content
Management System OILCMS, its architecture, conception and strengths.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Abstract
As with the growing degree of office automation and diffuse use of electronic media, such as e-mails, written business communication
is becoming a key element to promote synergies, relationships and disseminating information about products and services. Task
recognition and the definition of strategies and suitable vocabularies are some of the activities that office workers deal with each
time a communicative intent has to be effectively transferred and understood by a given addressee. This paper introduces a Web-
based intelligent training system based on the Constructivism theory and Self-directed learning paradigms for assisting company
workers in the drafting business letters-writing task. A case-based engine suggests ad hoc rhetorical letters that users have the
chance to adapt to their particular contexts and save them into user-defined case libraries.

1. Introduction
In the business world, knowledge is a fundamental key of
success. As with individuals, knowledge is what enables the
business to grow and succeed in a global market. Knowl-
edge Management systems may employ various computa-
tional techniques for analyzing, representing and storing
textual information, including: natural language analysis,
data mining and information filtering and retrieval ?). Nev-
ertheless, knowledge embedded in and carried through mul-
tiple entities including routines and policies is usually more
difficult to recognize and capitalize for different tasks or
activities.
One possible definition of knowledge focuses on the pro-
cess of applying expertise or, in other words, the awareness
that enables people to possess the ability and the skill re-
quired to accomplish particular tasks ?). In this process,
knowledge acquisition in terms of cognitive processes, such
as perception, learning, communication, association and
reasoning, is essential to build concrete know-how, crafts,
and skills to apply to specific contexts, allowing them to
make each time the most appropriate decisions.
Computer-based Learning provides technologies and
associated methodologies in order to develop educational
environments. In broad terms, e-Learning guides learners
through information, transferring knowledge in terms of
skills and expertise, helping them perform specific tasks.
The principal advantages are to be seen in the opportu-
nity to overcome several restrictions such as a scarcity of
human teaching resources or the time spent for organiz-
ing complex and tailored courses for single learners and
evaluating the acquired knowledge levels.
In spite of that, advanced learning technologies are rarely
integrated in KM systems. Existing knowledge is identified,
distributed and utilized by users to make better decisions
but there is a lack of teaching practices that support tools
and paradigms for effectively transferring and acquiring
that knowledge.
Current e-Learning technologies are mostly based on tra-
ditional teaching practices and focused on content creation
and distribution, sometimes enhanced with collaborative
features. They basically fail to model the current user ac-
tivities and recognize knowledge gaps that motivate the ac-
quisition of new information and skills ?).
In this paper we introduce a case-based training system
for letter writing in the business domain, based on Con-
structivism theories.
Current state-of-the-art in this domain shows a lack of
methodologies and tools for assisting users in this partic-

2. ular task, which involves human resources in almost any
company and organization. An innovative knowledge-based
task model together with a self-direct learning approach
?) guide users, in a non-directive way, in choosing resource
materials, that can be pieced together to fit the informa-
tion needs related to the current activities.
The paper is organized as follows. First, we will identify
the underlying theories and paradigms that have inspired
the development of the proposed system (Section ??). Be-
fore dealing with the structure of the internal knowledge
base in Sect. ??, we will summarize the work of linguistic
experts to identify important characteristics and elements
of the business letter domain in Sect. ??. The case-based
reasoner that proposes moves and letters related to the cur-
rent user activities will be introduced in Sect. ??, along a
simple scenario of interaction with the Web-based system.
The final sections will provide an evaluation of the effec-
tiveness of the proposed letter writing system in a real sce-
nario (Section ??), and related works (Section ??).
2. The Business Letter Writing System
The proposed system is based on Constructivism ?). Tra-
ditional e-Learning environments are often driven by pre-
scriptive interactions that allow learners to input informa-
tion, but the responses to that input are often prescribed
and deterministic. In contrast to this paradigm, open learn-
ing systems allow students participating more directly in
shaping learning goals and choosing activities ?).
Our business letter writing system uses a holistic, self-
directed, constructivist learning paradigm to motivate
users to piece together the most effective business letter
and to verify the effectiveness of the final product in real
scenarios. The system does not directly judge the quality
of the outcomes but leave the users to evaluate the ef-
fectiveness of the letter they produce. This assumes that
users operates with an educational environment which
allows them to assess real-world interactions, such as the
opinions of their bosses and colleagues or feedbacks from
sale representatives in contact with the recipients.
2.1. The Business Letter model
This section is focused on the research carried out by
domain and linguistic experts to label sample business let-
ters that forms part of the internal knowledge base. The
concepts of move and strategy will be proposed to define
the rhetorical development underlying such intent and a
metacognitive analysis of the tags will be proposed in di-
aloguing with the user. A letter is represented by a set
of moves, where a move is a meaningful unit represented
in linguistic lexical-grammatical forms and related to the
communicative purposes of the activity in which members
of the community are engaged ?). In a business letter a sin-
gle move is one of its several atomic rhetorical components;
indeed, a business letter can be deemed as a sequence of
rhetorical moves, each one expressing a particular commu-
nicative intent involving social and cognitive approaches
to language comprehension and production. Examples of
moves are: Ask for Explanation, Encourage fur-
ther Contacts, Solicit Communication.
Other important features characterizing a business let-
ter are: style, strategy, type and some behavioral parame-
ters that help represent the social context, such as the ad-
dressee’s and sender’s attitudes. These features are briefly
discussed here.
Letter Strategy. A writer’s rhetorical strategy is de-
fined as a particular path through written text, made up
of a series of choices ?), in order to reach a particular com-
municative goal. Instances of available strategies are: In-
troduce product and create interest in visiting
company’s web site or Present arguments passing
final judgment.
Letter Style. Every communication has its precise for-
mulation, often proceeding from the interaction between
the behavioral characteristics of the sender and the ad-
dressee, from the relationship that the two parties share
and from temporary elements connected to the communi-
cation they put into effect. Examples of styles are: Con-
tained Annoyance, Friendly, Courteous but firm.
Letter Type. A type represents a category of letters that
share a general communicative intent, i.e., the key subject
of one letter. Instances of letter types are: Offer of a new
product, Apology for poor service or Apology for
poor service.
Letter Addressee and Sender. The system represents
a combination of characteristics that form the distinctive
character of both sender and addressee. In the construc-
tivist learning approach it becomes strategic to represent
the social context too. These profiles can be edited by the
user when writing a new letter to better represent the given
context. A predefined set of letters, styles and types are in-
cluded in the knowledge base as the result of the linguistic
expert analysis of the business letter domain.
2.2. The Knowledge Base of Letters
After having introduced a model of the business letter
domain, it is possible to define the Knowledge Base (KB)
used to organize, store, retrieve and reuse information. An
overview of the KB structure is depicted in Fig. ??. The
different layers of abstraction represented by the KB allow
to characterize conceptual attributes that are exploited by
the case-based engine to structure and suggest new letters.
The P-Layer contains objects representing distinct sec-
tions of a piece of writing. Each object basically realizes a
move included in the M-Layer. In other words, this layer
translates conceptual moves, that is, atomic communica-
tive intents, into real textual representations that become
part of a letter. The P-Layer is a set of elements: Lp ≡
{p1, p2 . . . , pn} where pi is one of the n paragraphs stored
by the domain expert or by the user into the system knowl-

edge base, each of which connected to a single move of the
M-Layer. The P-Layer is the only layer that contains tex-
tual information for composing a letter. Formally, the layer
includes a subset of shared paragraphs defined by a domain
expert. The user has the chance to personalize the available
paragraphs adding new elements.
As already stated in the previous section, the abstract
key element of a communicative intent is the move m. We
define M-Layer as the set Lm of all the atomic communica-
tive intents: Lm ≡ {m1, m2 . . . , mn}, being mi the generic
abstract communicative intent, i.e., a move. Each move m
stored by the domain experts or by users has associated
one of more realizations in the P-Layer.
The L-Layer is the most abstract layer of the KB. It
represents a user communicative need. This layer contains
all the letters represented as abstract entities, composed of
a sequence of communicative intents, i.e., moves. Therefore,
a letter can be thought as a particular abstract pattern
of atomic moves. We define the L-Layer the set Ll of all
available letters: Ll ≡ {l1, l2 . . . , ln}, being li the generic
abstract letter, instanced by the domain expert or by the
user into the system’s knowledge base. In particular, such
a representation instantiates a letter into a particular path,
that is, a direct graph in the M-Layer.
2.3. The Case-Based Subsystem
The Case-Based Subsystem is the AI component of the
system that operates on the KB, analyzing the current con-
text in order to retrieve and suggest new letters to users.
It is composed of two main components: the Case Library
(CL) and the Case-Based Reasoner (CBR). The former is a
KB repository of previously instantiated letters, while the
CBR is the engine that performs the case-based reasoning
process ?). In particular, the main purpose of the CBR is
to manage the CL, storing and retrieving, on-demand, new
letter instances. Before discussing the CBR component, we
give a formalization of the variables used by the reasoner
for the CL analysis.

The tuple RP represents the communicative purpose of
a letter, contextualized for a particular social context.
2.3.1. The Case Library Representation
The CL is a repository of cases, each of them defined by
pairs: < OldProblem, OldSolution >, being OldProblem
a formal representation of an old rhetorical purpose, i.e.,
acquired experience, stored in the CL by users or domain
experts, and OldSolution the adopted solution to solve
the corresponding communicative need, i.e., a sequence of
moves.The CL represents an instance of OldProblem as an
RP tuple, while an OldSolution is represented as a letter
lj ∈ Ll (see Tab. ??). In this way, a generic case Ck of the
library is represented by a couple: Ck ≡< RPi, lj >.
2.3.2. The Case-Based Reasoner
A further relevant component of the system is the CBR
based on the well-known case-based solving cycle ?) (see
Fig. ??). During the writing process the user can rely on a

4. sort of assistant whose goal is to give him suggestions about
a new letter composition based on the acquired experience.
Consequently, the user has the chance to directly use the
suggested letters or exploit part of them, i.e., one or a se-
quence of moves, as a customizable template for creating a
new instance. In the rest of the section, the case-based rea-
soning four-step process applied to the proposed system is
introduced.

Retrieve. After having received in input an instance
NewProblem represented by a tuple RP, the CBR ana-
lyzes the CL and generates a ranked list of the most simi-
lar rhetorical purposes related to the old cases. The ranked
list is shown to the user by the Web UI. The case retrieval
specifically works on two libraries: the user’s personal CL,
defined as CLu, and the general starting CL, named CLs,
provided by linguists. In this way, each user has a differ-
ent personal library CLu, related to the user-defined para-
graphs.
This organization allows everyone to personally interpret
the concept of writing an effective business letter within
the author’s very context.

that characterize a rhetorical purpose. In the evaluation
(Sect. ??), they take on the following empirically-derived
values: w1 = 0.3, w2 = 0.5, w3 = 1, w4 = 0.4 and w5 =
0.4). The di values represent the distance between two
pair of RP components. They are defined as follows: d1 ≡
dsty(styi, styj), d2 ≡ dstr(stri, strj), d3 ≡ dtyp(typi, typj),
d4 ≡ dsen(seni, senj ), d5 ≡ dadr(adri, adrj). The sum is
normalized by a constant m that makes it fall into the [0,1]
range. For instance, in order to calculate the distance dsty
between two style attributes styi and styj, a boolean met-
rics is used, namely counting 1 when the two values match
and 0 if they do not. The same metric has been employed

for comparing strategies and types. In order to draw a dis-
tance between the two binary array components seni and
senk, the Hamming distance is used. This metric has been
used for assessing the comparison of addressees as well. Fig-
ure ?? shows an example of letter parameter selection. For
style, strategy and type parameters, the users can choose
preset values, set by the domain expert, or one among their
own.
Reuse. The case-based reuse envisages the user’s assess-
ment of the results obtained in the previous phase, and
possibly the selection of one of the suggested solutions,
hence an adaptation of that choice to meet possible needs.
Users are given a list of the likely solutions, shown in or-
der of decreasing similarity. They may decide whether to
entirely adopt one of the proposed solutions or just a part
of the solution, either choosing individual moves or remov-
ing/replacing some moves from the solution. The user is
able to analyze the current situation and is granted total
freedom of selection. The draft letter is a sequence of moves
mi, each one associated with a realization pj, i.e., phrase or
paragraph, in the P −Layer. Users are able to select moves
from an alphabetic list or the suggested sequences. They
can also replace/remove moves or choose the best deemed
phrase associated with a given move. The system is ini-
tialized with a limited set of letters identified by a domain
expert. Commercial correspondence often requires writing
many letters similar one another, therefore it is easy to set
up an adequate CL providing consistent set of suggestions.
After having completed the editing, the user saves the work.
However, the letter will not be included in the case library
until the Revise phase is performed.
Revise. After having completed the letter editing, the
user send it to the addressee. The revise phase is often
the longest one of the whole case-based reasoning cycle for
users, because they have to wait the answer from the ad-
dressee and analyze it according to the expected outcome.
Users are given four feedback values: Bad, Poor, Good
and Excellent, which they use to assess the difference
between expected and real effects of letter delivery.
Retain. The retain phase is rather simple. Once the let-
ter has been edited, sent and evaluated, it is already in
the suitable form to be included in the CL, that is, in the

5. problem-solution structure.
The problem is saved, together with all its parameters,
while a solution is kept as a move sequence.
3. Evaluation
In our context, the Kirkpatrick four-level model ?) has
been employed since it does not employ hard-to-assess mea-
sures, e.g., Return of Investment, while it focuses on impor-
tant learning variables. Essentially, our experiment investi-
gates the effectiveness of two functionally different types of
learning to write business letters: learning-by-BLITS and
learning-by-hand (LBH). The term BLITS denotes the pro-
posed Web-based system. Learning-by-BLITS is further
distinguished in an intelligent modality (LBI) and a normal
one (LBN). As for intelligent modality, we denote BLITS
along with the CBR functionalities, where the system sug-
gests five top-ranked letters according to the current case.
The non-intelligent modality refers to BLITS without the
CBR engine, that is, without any suggestion by the system
but all the available moves and letters stored in the KB in
alphabetical order.
In this evaluation, we focus on the efficacy of the train-
ing process to provide learners with the ability to write ef-
fective letters, that is, as assessed by addressees. In other
words, the learner’s ability to communicate the message in
a correct and effective way, which is the main goal of a busi-
ness letter. This entails the following research questions:
– Q1 LBN vs. LBH: Does the BLITS system without intel-
ligent support effectively help learners to increase their
ability to write effective English business letters com-
pared to learners that learn to write English business let-
ters without BLITS (e.g., by means of word processors)?
– Q2 LBI vs. LBN: Do learners who use the intelligent
component of BLITS write more effective letters with
respect to learners who use the BLITS system without
intelligent support?
– Q3 LBI vs. LBH: Do learners who use the intelligent
component of the BLITS system write more effective
letters with respect to learners that learn to write English
business letters by hand?
The evaluation aims at measuring the improvement in
writing business letters comparing the three different writ-
ing modality. We considered several indicators, measured
in the post-tests, such as the letter style, organization and
strategy.
The first phase of the evaluation aims at measuring the
initial skill in business letters writing. A background ques-
tionnaire and a set of pre-tests are given to the 24 learners
involved, half chosen from Computer Science courses and
half from Administrative assistant and secretary schools.
This sample is organized in three groups of 8 people, each
one assigned to one learning modality, i.e., LBI, LBN and
LBH. Each user is asked to write three different business
letters, corresponding to three scenarios previously devised
by a domain expert. The available time for writing is two

The Background questionnaire ensures that learners
have the minimum level of english language knowledge to
perform the evaluation. The Pre-test questionnaires are
used to evaluate the English language level, in terms of:
basic business english, basic business letters, basic business
letter writing and business letter structure. Both of them
have been previously devised by a domain expert.
After the writing task, learners are asked to answer two
questionnaires: Post-test and Happy sheet questionnaires.
The former aims at evaluating the english skill after having
written the three letters. The happy sheet corresponds to
the first level of the Kirkpatrick model and helps to collect
feedbacks about the evaluation from learners.
Table ?? shows the most important statistical variables
collected during the evaluation of the LBI modality. As
we can see, between the pre-test and post-test there is a
difference of ∆ = 32% in terms of average test score. For the
sake of shortness, we are not able to discuss all the happy
sheet questions. Nevertheless, one of them asks Does in your
opinion this rhetorical approach to the drafting of business
letters, based on sequences of moves help you to compose
business letters?. Almost all learners (91%) were satisfied
with respect to the proposed rhetorical approach based on
atomic rhetorical moves. This is an important pedagogical
result in the context of Self-directed learning. Learners are
free to use the system as their own needs and this result
states that the user found this approach stimulating.
As for hypothesis testing, the non-parametric Wilcoxon-
Mahn-Withney (WMW) test is employed. For all tests, the
Null hypothesis H0 is:There is no difference between the two
samples score distributions. The Alternative hypothesis H1
is: There is a significative difference between the statistical
distributions underlying the two sample scores. The signifi-
cance degree is α = 0.05.
From the WMW tests we obtains: LBI vs. LBH p −
value = 0.02, LBI vs. LBN p − value = 0.01. In other
words, the intelligent modality (LBI) gives added value to
the learning process compared both to LBH and LBN (null
hypothesis H0 rejected). In both cases, our research hy-
potheses connected to the research questions Q2 and Q3 are
strengthened: the CBR helps learning. On the other hand,
the test LBN vs. LBH does not show the expected results
(p − value = 0.08). Essentially, this result indicates that
there is no significant difference in the learning process be-
tween LBN and LBH in our evaluation. Users do not take
advantage of the information stored in the CL when the
intelligent support is not enabled. The cognitive overload
in choosing a letter in the KB is high and users prefer to
write it on their own, that is, the same behaviour used by
LBH users.

6. 4. Related Work
The current business solutions usually propose an envi-
ronment for the management of structured letter templates,
such as those used in the systems Business-in-a-Box 1
and
Business-Pro 2
and in several business letter books ??).
These tools do not help the user to draft a letter step by
step, but they simply suggest a structured text, i.e., a tem-
plate, with the relevant data to be input.
In different contexts, Writer’s Aid ?), a system de-
signed to support author writing efforts by performing var-
ious bibliographic tasks that typically arise in the process
of writing a research manuscript. This system proposes a
correct but incomplete KB, which is updated by means of
a planner. In the proposed system the KB is directly up-
dated by the work done by the user when drafting letters,
and as they are saved in the case library, according to the
educational paradigms employed.
Graham et al. ?) mention two methods to assist writ-
ers and remove stylistic inconsistency in a document. The
first method suggests an approach based on two neural net-
works, whereas the second approach is based on bigram fre-
quencies. Blasius et al. ?) discuss a frame-based approach
for business letters. The letters are modeled through a se-
mantic network for a knowledge-based document analysis
system. This representation of business letters does not take
into account the rhetorical aspects, nor the communicative
process behind the writing of a letter.
5. Conclusions
The proposed Web-based system, inspired by the educa-
tional approaches Constructivism and Self-directed learn-
ing, In spite of traditional approaches, leaves it up to users
evaluating and making judgments of what effective writing
means in a given situation, according to a number of sug-
gested alternatives and the outcomes obtained in previous
correspondence. A case-based reasoner suggests a number
of ad hoc templates that the user has the chance to adapt to
particular contexts and saves them into user-defined case
libraries. By means of this original structure of knowledge
and a case-based reasoner, the system is able to select the
most appropriate cases for the letter-writing assignment
undertaken by the user.
The evaluation confirmed our expectations: the system
helps users to learn how to write business letters in a more
effective way, w.r.t. traditional word processing tools.As fu-
ture work we plan a broader experimentation in real com-
panies scenario in order to verify the system efficacy and
the third and fourth level of the Kirkpatrick model, that
is, transfer and result performances in a real business com-
pany.
