The world population has grown exponentially from 300 million 2000 years ago to over 6 billion presently. India has a population of over 1.21 billion according to the 2011 census, accounting for 17.5% of the world population on only 2.4% of the world's surface area. While death rates have fallen due to improved health facilities, birth rates remain high due to cultural factors. This rapid population growth creates stress on food, housing, civic services and the environment. China has had success in stabilizing its population through its one-child policy and incentives for small families.
2015 Washington State Wildfires, Record-Breaking Activity
The 2015 Washington State wildfires was an example of exemplary effort on every level of disaster response. Although the disaster claimed numerous lives and a massive amount of destruction, the entire disaster management effort was demonstrative of what can be achieved through a Whole Community approach to disaster response. This 45 minute presentation briefly discusses the valiant effort of the brave men and women who succeeded in mitigating this massive threat to the Northwestern United States.

Capitalism has led to significant economic growth and increases in standards of living over the centuries. Global GDP and economies have expanded dramatically since 1000 AD. The US in particular has seen huge growth and now has the largest economy in the world. Knowledge and technology have also exploded under capitalism. While wealth is unevenly distributed, average incomes and access to food have risen over time, even for the lowest economic groups. Countries with more economic freedom also tend to meet basic human needs better. Lifespans have increased globally with economic growth. Capitalism is not without issues but has overall improved lives and reduced poverty.

Environmental Impact of the US Food System
The US food system has significant environmental impacts, including soil depletion and water pollution from monoculture farming encouraged by subsidies. Farm subsidies promote overproduction of corn, wheat, soybeans and cotton, leading farmers to plant these crops continuously which depletes soils of nutrients and increases need for fertilizers. Excess fertilizers pollute waterways, causing algae blooms and "dead zones". While GMOs reduce some pesticide use, they carry environmental risks like herbicide-resistant weeds. Large-scale industrial agriculture also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions through fertilizer use, shipping of commodities over long distances, and fuel used in production. To help address these issues, people can make choices to eat local and organic foods.
Rick Cruse - Corn/soy systems
Soil erosion costs farmers money through lost productivity and nutrient loss, costing approximately $4.55 per acre annually. However, soil erosion also costs taxpayers and society through offsite impacts like water pollution, totaling around $25 per acre annually. Between 2005-2014, US taxpayers spent over $3 billion in Iowa alone to subsidize more sustainable farming practices at a rate of around $12.50 per acre annually. Unless erosion rates are high and a farmer owns land for a long time, soil conservation remains more expensive than soil erosion for individual farmers. Overall erosion costs to taxpayers and society exceed costs to individual farmers.

Food (agriculture) production and distribution is estimated to cause approximately 25% of global warming (UN), which is causing drought in many areas. Agriculture uses 80% of the ground and surface water, increasing the water shortage. AgLantis is creating an urban farm right in the middle of heavy industry and will use hydroponic greenhouse production which yields as much as 40 times the produce using 10% of the water. The farm is on unused public buffer land, uses recycled agricultural grade water and is an innovate, replicable solution that dramatically decreases the carbon and water footprint of food production and distribution. Using recycled water high in nitrogen and phosphorus also eliminates the need for fossil fuel based fertilizers. The UN estimates 40% of agriculture is lost from farm-to-mouth. Growing in urban centers dramatically decreases that loss, much of which is due to long distane transportation.

Introduction • Texas, most amount of farmland present (83%) (Jay Blazek Crossley) • Also losing the most amount of land due to urbanization. • California is the nations largest Agricultural Producer. • The state is in one of the worst droughts in decades while losing land to urbanization. • New York has lost over half of their farmland. But are taking the appropriate steps to extinguish the problem.
- 4. Methods of Research Each state was researched under three criteria. • Cost • Quality and Quantity of Land • Conservation Projects • I used each of the states Agricultural Departments including USDA to do my research. • Farmland American Trust • Loan Programs

Results Texas • Lost 2.9 million acres • Some of the richest soils in America • Texas Conservation Fund has already saved 222,493 acres (Texas Department of Agriculture) California • Worst drought in 100 years • Irrigation and loss of vegetable crops • California Conservation Fund has saved 554,007 acres and 163,000 acres have been saved to benefit forest lands.
