The removal of foreign bodies from the heart and vasculature has shifted from the domain of the radiologist and even the thoracic or vascular surgeon to the terventional cardiologist and, in turn, from the radiographic suite or operating room to the cardiac catheterization Laboratory.
The intrathecal baclofen infusion therapy is an adjustable and reversible treatment option designed to manage generalized severe spasticity. A motor disorder that makes movement, posture and balance difficult, interfering in the function, daily activities, sleep patters and caregiving of patients.
Since this therapy was first used, multiple clinical studies have been conducted and, collectively, they have demonstrated that this therapy is a safe, well-tolerated, efficacious and cost-effective treatment. Via a reduction of their spasticity and spams, this therapy offers those patients, who are eligible to receive it, a solution effective in the long-term that helps them to improve their function, level of independence and quality of life.
This comprehensive and practical guide has been designed, from a multidisciplinary perspective, to summarize all the basic and most relevant aspects of the treatment of generalized severe spasticity using the intrathecal baclofen infusion therapy.
The purpose, goals and key steps for each one of the phases of this therapy (patient selection, screening test, infusion system implant procedure and therapy optimization and maintenance) are reviewed in detail throughout the guide. Additionally, the patient assessment and the patient and caregivers education, which are of critical importance to ensure a safe and effective treatment with this therapy, are also covered in separate chapters.
Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty are performed using general anesthesia, however, this largely depends on the doctor and the needs, circumstances and preferences of the patient.
