Aspergillus is a genus of molds that was first catalogued in 1729. It includes a few hundred species found worldwide. Aspergillus is classified in the division Deuteromycotina, class Hyphomycetes, order Moniliales, and family Moniliaceae. It has a mycelium and structures including conidiophores, vesicles, sterigmata, and conidia. Some Aspergillus species are economically important as storage fungi that cause seed rot, as contaminants in laboratories, and for producing mycotoxins, alcohol, and organic acids. A. niger specifically causes black mold on cotton balls and fruits.
